Homeschoolers in Highschool, Part Three

ooc: yea.

Mass went as would be expected, Brendan always zoned out lately during it. He had tried not to, noting the disrespect, but he just couldn't help himself. [Insert Priest's Name Here] was a highly skilled orator, he drew the people in with every point made. He stressed that tomorrow, Labor Day, be a relaxing day for everyone, a reward for all the hard work they have done during the year. He connected it to working for God. The true Labor Day is when we are reunited with Him in Heaven, so tomorrow, rejoice in the work that you have done, but do not forget the work left yet to be done in the world. He had commented, and much to many of the congregations amusement, that he expected everyone to be at the Labor Day picnic, if not for the food, then at least for the chance to dunk him at the dunking booth...

Tito Escobar, the East High football coach, had greeted Brendan's family at the passing of the peace. When the Mass was finished, he spoke to Brendan in particular: "Son, I have it on good authority that you did really well for Alipang Havens when he was in trouble. Have you considered trying out for the East Falcons wrestling team?"

"To be honest sir, I'm not a fan of wrestling. That's not my kind of sport. I like contact, but not like that. Something along the lines of lacrosse and football." Brendan said in reply to Mr. Escobar.

Grimly Plugging Away At Summarizing:

We have now seen a Sunday morning in Smoky Lake, Virginia.

Chilena Havens delayed coming to church to have a talk in a park with her birth brother Mike, who is sorry that their shared birth parents have been such a disappointment to Chilena. Managing a little bonding with _this_ blood relative, anyway, she made it to church in time to sit with the now-recovered Dan. Also attending Redemption Free Church were Brendan's girlfriend Jennifer, snake-owner Erin, Erin's mystery-author mother...and the Tisdale family.

We now know the names of the town's two Baptist churches. One, Nueva Vida, serves the non-Catholic Hispanics in the area. The Central American girl Suri was seen attending Nueva Vida with her aunt. The English-speaking Baptist church, called House On Rock, proves to be the spiritual home of Wilson Kramer, the former Navy SEAL. Brendan attended St. Timothy's, where he spoke with East High Falcons coach Tito Escobar. The senior priest at St. Timothy's has volunteered to be a dunking-booth target on Labor Day.

Alipang is now feeling that _anything_ is possible. He privately talked with Kim Tisdale's mother, intending to show his "realistic" acceptance of his having NO chance with Kim. But Mrs. Tisdale startled him by saying that she thinks Kim also likes him a lot, and that with a little patience there should soon be a green light for Alipang to court Kim! Alipang still can hardly believe it.

To complete the local ecclesiastical picture:

The LeMarque family attended First (and Only) Episcopal Church of Smoky Lake. Pastor Jessalyn Sawyer, in view of having officiated at several funerals over the summer, preached about the departed "living on in our hearts." Not one word about eternal life in an actual Heaven...which left Cindy LeMarque especially unsatisfied, in view of the brain tumor which might be sending her into eternity one of these days.

Cecilia Havens succeeded in grabbing a chance to talk to Elizabeth Tisdale out of hearing of any of the Tisdale daughters. Time was fleeting, so Cecilia was quick.

"Alipang told me what you said. If our _families_ got together some way, then _they_ would be together without the pressure of _calling_ it a date."

"What a good idea! Like just a little get together of some sort...hmm" Elizabeth said trying to think of what to do.

"Rafael would let them off work as needed," whispered Cecilia. "He's been rooting for my son and your daughter since the first day we all met. Oh, and if you want it to be subtle, we can include still other people in whatever we do. Maybe an outing to the seashore? Or to the Barrier Islands?"

"Oh wow, yeah that'd be great. And I knew it from the first time I met Al he had a thing for my lil kimmy-kimmy-coco-puff." She smiled.

(ooc yes my mom really does call me that )

"Which is great: Barrier Islands or additional people? And I should tell you: I always kept Alipang from dating girls, because I was afraid he would get in a fight over a girl and really hurt the other boy. But if one good thing came from his letting that hooligan Rocknose hit him without hitting back, it's that my boy proved he CAN control his temper."

"Oh for both, it seems like a great idea. And thats good."

"Then maybe YOU should pick the extra people, to make your daughter more comfortable. It doesn't matter to Alipang who else comes, he won't have eyes for anyone but Kim."

Cecilia didn't let herself think of the possibility of other would-be boyfriends of Kim's being included. Surely Kim's mother wouldn't let that happen. To Elizabeth she said, "We'll need to decide on a day. Like, next Saturday? And if you're _really_ confident of Kim liking Alipang too, maybe she could offer to let him drive her car with her on the way to Assateague? He is a very cautious and responsible driver, even though he doesn't have his license yet."

OOC: assuming it's after church and everyone is still in the church building.

IC: Summer had gotten to church at the last minute and had taken a seat in the back. After the service she remained seated and sat thinking not really noticing what was going on around her.

Shavonda Moore the worship leader came up and greeted Summer, whispering to her, "Did you see the new family attending again? The Tisdales?"
