"I would gladly enroll in a JROTC program, if they had one. I'm actually surprised a school, specifically this school located in Virginia, doesn't."

"JROTC?" Jen asked. "Something to do with the military? I remember my brother talking about it once..."

"Whereas colleges have ROTC programs standing for Reserve Officer Training Course, just add Junior, emphasis on the J, and it's a high school thing".

Alipang brightened up as soon as he saw Brendan and Jen come in. "My man!" he exclaimed. "You'll have to have Maria wait on you, all my tables are full; but that's okay, Maria's prettier than I am. It's just great that you're here! If you want real hot stuff, like they put on Thai food, just let her know."

"A girl was in here just before you came," said Maria Ramos to Brendan, "who obviously thinks _Alipang_ is hot stuff. She couldn't take her eyes off him. Said he saved her from breaking her neck or something."

Alipang, who did _not_ care to have people pairing him up with Cindy, was exasperated. "All I did was hold her when she lost her balance in a crowded stairwell. And the only conversation I had with her at that time was asking about her brother Steve--the one Chilena was curious about. But don't let me stop you from eating."

[And that fills in the sit-down-and-order stage]

She shook her head " No, not really," she told him, looking the others way " Dan can I met your family?," she asked.

"Hey Alipang. Oh alright, but don't let that stop you from sitting down and talking, that is if you have the time." said Brendan.

"Sure," he said. "What about this weekend? My parents are staying in because of some projects my father has to do. That'll be perfect."

In the absence of Copperfox..

Mario sat Brendan and Jen down at window seat table. "For starters what can I get you for drinks?" Brendan replied, "I'll have a Dr. Pibb (the southern Dr. Pepper) please, thanks".

Father Penn having decided to stay for dessert, Alipang toyed with the idea of asking him about the LeMarque family. But no, if I do that, it's bound to get back to Cindy, and then she'll think I'm interested in her.

So he just kept working.

"I'll have a Coke, please," Jen said.

Alipang had another idea, just barely in time to catch the priest.

"Excuse me, Father, but I had a question. I know some of the doctors and nurses who volunteer at the Free Clinic downtown go to your church. Have any of them ever met a family named Tisdale? Mother's name Elizabeth, has four daughters, father walked out?"

"I've heard mention of them, son," said the parish priest; "but I can't say that I know anything remarkable about them. I don't mean I'm under seal of confessional, I mean I don't know anything special about them."

"Oh. Sorry to bother you, Father. I hope you'll come again."

"I'm sure I will, Alipang. Will you be at the City Labor Day Picnic over at the lake?"

"Yes, sir! Mr. Imada will close up here, the same as he did the last two years, and contribute food there."
