"hey whatever works" brendan laughed too

Jen took another sip of her Coke and felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see her friend Emily standing there. Jen smiled. She hadn't seen anyone familiar in awhile. She hugged her friend and invited her to sit with them.

When Alipang had read Kim's reply, he finally looked in her direction--just once, long enough to whisper, "WORDS? Were you so busy scolding me that you didn't see how Rocknose PHYSICALLY knocked Dan down by surprise, which was what started it all?"

Then his head snapped forward again, and he did not say another word to Kim that day.

Between sixth and seventh periods, Alipang went outside on a hunch--having first left his cellphone and wallet with a friend with instructions to record video from concealment. He had heard some kids saying something about "outside"....

Sure enough, Rocknose was there, talking big to several hangers-on....including Leopard Man. Leopard Man hid behind Rocknose as soon as he saw Alipang coming; but Rocknose beamed with glee.

"Think you got enough help?" Alipang asked.

Rocknose held up a hard fist. "Here's MY help."

"Good enough. But you never even landed one on Jason; and I could take Jason on his best day. So I tell you what, Rocknose: I'll give you your payback for Jason cheap-shooting you. You can just hit me, for free. How old are you, Rocknose?"

"Nineteen," relied the puzzled thug.

"Then you get nineteen free punches. Only, leave my teeth and eyes alone--and, down there. If you hit those places, all bets are off. Otherwise, you get free punches. If you can even knock me off my feet, without my fighting back, I'll be impressed. Come on, it's the best offer you're going to get." Alipang spread his arms as if welcoming guests to a party.

For an instant, Rocknose looked as if he were seeing the light, reconsidering, all the things characters do in hippie movies. But Alipang knew that was a fake-out. Sure enough, the hoodlum suddenly gave a barbarian yell, charged at Alipang, and gave him a body-body-nose combination (away from the teeth and eyes).

Alipang was moved backward, but kept his feet under him. So Rocknose went at his cheeks, one blow each, laughing, "Just like Jesus!" But Alipang did not fall. Losing all subtlety, the bully spent his remaining fourteen punches on Alipang's ribs and stomach. Alipang folded low, knees dipping low....but he still did not fall. "That's--nineteen," he gasped, when he could force his diaphragm to take in air again; "thanks for--leaving the--teeth alone." And then he turned his back on them and walked back toward the school. Rocknose, Leopard Man and the others were silent at first, as if in awe....but Alipang knew what bullies were ACTUALLY like, as opposed to what Mrs. Lewiston wanted to believe they were like.

He knew the timing almost to the second. There it came: the howls and whoops of derisive laughter, heavily seasoned with the tedious profanity of empty minds. "Haw haw, that _________ really DO think he's Jesus!"

Alipang's friend using the phone-camera had one other thing ready for him: a wad of cold wet paper towels. These brought some relief to his hammered face, and made it cleaner. The friend carried the camera-phone to the Principal's office, while Alipang retrieved his books from his locker, attended his final class and insisted that he was fine.

For this was not even worth mentioning, compared to beatings he had taken in his life beginning at age seven.

Brendan located Alipang--but had to wait his turn. Vice-Principal Warner had come to the classroom where Alipang was, effectively ending teaching. Warner was trying to get Alipang to go to the school nurse, to which Alipang replied, "But, sir, isn't it enough that I love myself?"

"But your nose is broken," said Warner.

"With all respect, sir, no, it isn't. I know the difference from experience. It's only bloodied. And what really matters is waiting for karma."

"What's that?"

"I think I'll be waiting for a CAR to take me home, sir. By the way, sir, is the Principal pleased with the results of my embracing my so-called enemies?"

ooc: Clever last line.

Brendan patiently waited for the VP to leave. Then went up to Alipang. "You could've informed me, you know. I may not agree with you, but I guess your point clear to the Principal. No more martyrdoms like this for awhile, alright? At least not without my backing." Brendan hugged Alipang, glad to see he was alright. "Your a crazy Filipino you know that?" He laughed.

Alina had heard what had happened in one of the classes involving one of teh school bullies and an Asian kid. Perhaps it was the one who had asked her if she went to his school.
According to shcool rumor, he had been hammered without fighting back. Stupid idea on his part.

"Yes, I am crazy, crazy about--" Alipang began and cut himself short. "I'll have to see the nurse anyway, they're afraid of liability. But first I think Loose-head-ston will want to discuss with Mr. Warner how they can help Rocknose to love himself still more."

He sighed, and it hurt a little to sigh. "Kim told me I was looking for a fight 'over words.' It wasn't words that knocked Dan onto the floor! But even if Kim just didn't see the shove, that's no better; it means that _without_ seeing all that happened, Kim was ready to _assume_ I was an idiot looking to have a fight over nothing. She has me packaged as a retarded kid, excuse me, an 'intellectually challenged individual below voting age.' "

"I can't speak for Kim. I don't know her, I don't understand her. Especially her ignorance of you my friend." He then whispered, "I know she has melted your heart. I know how terribly hurt you must become when she treats you this way. Maybe it's time to realize the better ones out there?"

Alipang half-laughed, which also hurt; he probably had a rib or two slightly cracked. "Kim probably thinks she's teaching me deep wisdom I never heard of before. And Mom and Dad would rather I didn't notice ANY girls in the first place, even though Chilena gets to date. I think they think I 'still have issues.' "

But now Mrs. Lewiston herself arrived WITH the school nurse, who examined Alipang on the spot and judged he had one left rib damaged. She took off Alipang's shirt--forcing him to tell again the story of his scars, lest anyone think his adoptive father had inflicted them--and wrapped his torso, which made him feel a bit better.

"Sometimes its better to be an all boys school." He winked at him. "At least that way, you can shut someone up with a fist, and masses would cheer, not cry"

EDIT: off to bed.

"I love you, brother," Alipang assured Brendan; "but it is true, at least, that we need to choose our battles. The local scum will _possibly_ be slowed down a bit after being caught on camera like this; but you still need to use discretion--you know, that quality Kim refuses to believe I have any of."

Dan left Chilena and went to go check on Alipang. He saw his scars and immediately his eyes widened. "Are you okay?"

Alipang smiled grimly. "The scars are old news, they came here with me on the plane. Only one cracked rib; I've had as many as five broken at once before. And I've done what Mrs. Lewiston and certain other ladies want: I accomplished something without fighting. At least, I accomplished something IF the school WILL take any disciplinary action against Rocknose."

"A cracked rib? Ouch!" Dan said.

"They heal soon enough," Alipang replied casually; "at least mine did, the last, oh, six times. I should be able to work my serving shift tonight. But Rocknose isn't thinking of something: he's old enough to be tried as an adult. Probably been held back in school so many times, he thinks adult accountability can't happen to him."
