Homeschoolers in Highschool, Part Two

"Of course, there ARE American kids who've taken the measure of pain; SAD to say, some injure themselves on purpose--I can't understand that. But enough others HAVEN'T ever defeated pain, that they can get really impressed by my shrugging it off. Still, I'd be just as happy NOT to have lived through the things that brought me to my 'immunity.' "

Before much longer, alerted by her daughter, Mrs. Havens hurried to the school. "Hi, Mom," Alipang greeted her. "Got another cracked rib...from a punk who just might actually do a little time for it."

Suddenly Alipang did a sort of double-take at himself. "I must be a little dazed. He can't serve time for hitting ME, because I told him he could, and it would be dishonorable to charge him now for what I told him he could do for free. But his shoving Dan is still assault."

"I need to hear the whole story," said his worried mother.

"There's a girl in it, sort of," Alipang told her.

PARDON THE REPEAT POSTING, BUT (1) IT'S ADVANCING THE PLOT, AND (2) IT'S NOT INTERFERING WITH ANYONE ELSE. THIS CONCLUDES SCHOOL HOURS ON WEDNESDAY.

Alipang waited for his father to join them at the school--which didn't take long--before he made his announcement: that he intended to work his shift at the Pansit Paradise, and (this part he only hinted at) he would be mortally insulted if anyone told him he was too weak to do so.

Eric Havens halted his wife's objections. "Cecilia, our son _means_ it when he says he's had far worse than this; and the best medicine he can possibly receive right now is...to be treated as a young _man_ who knows what he's talking about and knows what he's capable of. Why did we discontinue homeschooling him? He wasn't rebelling against it, he was doing just fine; but we thought it was time he got the chance to show that he could function in the outside world. And I say Alipang is functioning better than some people are giving him credit for." He was rewarded by the fierce gratitude in the boy's eyes.

"But, Dr. Havens," objected Mrs. Lewiston, "your son is a danger to himself; he clearly has a self-hatred problem which in turn leads to disruptive--"

"Madam Principal," Eric cut in, "I would call it _disruptive_ to terrorize the smaller children and steal their money by force. Edward Mannering was doing that on the very _first_ morning of this term, and _your_ self-esteem factory did _nothing_ to protect his victims. It was MY SON who provided Sammy Ashford the protection that YOU failed to provide; and his first choice of a way to do it _wasn't_ fighting, either. I happen to know that some of your faculty here like to belittle homeschoolng families; but I suggest that you bring some civilization to this campus--in which I'll gladly assist if I can--before you breathe a word of criticism to the homeschooling which has produced such an _honorable_ young man as my son."

In the end, though relieved by his parents of the burden of his books, Alipang walked home by his own preference and urgent request. A sizeable escort was quick to form around him, which included Sammy Ashford, Cindy and Steve LeMarque, the girl Callie who had spoken up at the assembly...and Gary, the football player who had learned to respect Alipang.

And he DID work his full shift at the Pansit Paradise. Uncle Rafael understood that he needed to do this.

" I don't know any more Dan," she told him, hind her head in his arm " What a great birthday I'm having," she told him.

Callie persuaded her family to come eat at the Pansit Paradise Wednesday evening. By her urging, they requested one of Alipang's tables, then pointedly told him to take as much time as he needed when serving them.

Alipang appreciated Callie's gesture of support. He appreciated further that she was doing it as friendliness, not in an effort to snag him as a boyfriend. It would look odd anyway, with her being what, three inches taller?

Interestingly, Mr. Kramer the SEALS veteran also came in to eat. While not taking one of Alipang's stations, he did find an opportunity to tell the youth something: "You're going to be seeing more of me in the immediate future. I'm having the county deputize me as a sheriff's deputy; and with the concurrence of the city police, I'll be providing security at your school until further notice. Your Principal won't let you know it, but she IS at least a little embarrassed that you've done more than she has to keep the students safe."

Well, it's Chilena's birthday. Kim-the-character has managed to offend Alipang deeply by assuming that he was challenging Rocknose earlier over nothing but words, when in fact that bully had physically assaulted Alipang's sister's boyfriend. Alipang decided to prove to Kim that he was perfectly capable of NOT fighting--by going up to Rocknose and LETTING the 19-year-old held-back-in-school punk pound on him without striking back. (Rocknose wasn't even able to knock Alipang off his feet.) Not much else is happening, except that Alina the Swedish girl has tentatively begun befriending Sarah, the barely-seen character of Aslan's Messenger.

An eleven-year-old black girl vaguely known to Summer, named Lacey, approached her. Lacey was the youngest student in Pitik Imada's Escrima class, which made her a friend of Alipang's. "Hey, Summer!" the girl called. "Did you hear what happened to Alipang this afternoon?"

[If Summer is not already assumed to know, you can assume Lacey tells about it, and Summer can respond.]

"I heard something. Not sure if what I heard was true or not though." Summer replied. "You never can tell these days." She smiled.

"This is true, Summer; it's even on video! There's this big mean dumb hillbilly they call Rocknose, held back two or three years 'cause he's LAZY. Leopard Man made an agreement with him, they'd help each other against their enemies, an' Alipang's who Leopard Man was thinkin' of. Rocknose knocked that boy Dan onto the floor, tryin' to get to Alipang, so Alipang was gonna fight Rocknose after school, but Jason Katon sucker-punched Rocknose right then. Alipang didn't think it was fair to fight someone who's already hurt, though he would've cleaned Rocknose's clock anyway; an' some girl Alipang's crazy about was scoldin' him almost like Mrs. Lewiston. So he decided he'd prove he _can_ restrain his temper, but he figured he'd also get video taken of what Rocknose did. So he let Rocknose beat on him without hittin' back, and Rocknose couldn't even knock him out in nineteen punches--I know how many 'cause Alipang said the creep could hit him as many times as his age. Dr. an' Mrs. Havens came to school, but Alipang wouldn't let 'em drive him home. He was gonna show that he could still walk home, an' he did it! Now he's workin' at the Pansit just like nothin' happened."

Lacey sighed. "If I was five years older, _I'd_ be his girlfriend!"
