Mr. Kramer told Summer, "Sammy Ashford only had the wind knocked out of him, and a bump on his thread from hitting the floor. But diving at a kid twice his size--that took guts. And may have made a real difference to your windpipe. Is Sammy a friend of yours? I guess he is NOW; and I know he hangs out with your friend Alipang."

Assume it was 2nd period by the time Summer could go

Alipang didn't know what was happening to Summer till it was all over. When he did find out, he hastened as fast as he could to where she was.

"Summer! Are you hurt bad? I'm sorry, I'm so sorry that _______ got at you! I never should have let that other punk Rocknose have the free punches, or I'd be moving normally now, and maybe I would have--!"

Alipang's face now had the look which ignorant, shallow observers regarded as "crazy." But Summer knew it was the look of a boy who had had to grow old too soon, who had scarcely had any childhood--and who, instead of letting it make a monster of him, had tried to let it make a noble warrior of him, but that came with a cost inside him as well as in outward circumstances. "I'm glad you're okay, Summer. All I can do now is try to get well soon....and forget about proving anything to Kim and Grant."

Summer looked at him. "Like I said before. Be careful. Don't go into a fight carelessly." She smiled. "I know I shouldn't worry so much but it's in my nature. I don't want to see any of my friends hurt." She rubbed her neck gently.

Alipang squeezed her hand, then went back to where he was supposed to be. The teachers were cutting him some slack, after what he had been through.
