Retaw didn't sight any fellow Gryphons in the span of time that he cared to search after being on air-mail duty for most of the day. Returning to the city, he spotted a different Narnian being: a Marshwiggle, speaking to a man who looked like a goverment official.

EDIT: This can't be the same moment in time where I last left Woefulgut, because Woefulgut was in town quite awhile before Retaw and Flower got back from the mail run.

Flower decided she didn't like it in the city. She would've gone back to the inn, but she didn't know where it was.

'Stay calm Flower,' she thought to herself, 'You're not lost, you're just.... going the wrong direction. Yeah, thats it, going in the wrong direction.' trying to regain confidence, Flower turned and started walking towards the direction she hoped the inn was.

Hilsa, the wife of the tanner Vandrick, was walking on an errand when she sighted the lost cat. She immediately crouched and extended her hands toward the small Narnian. "Flower, is that you?"

Startled, Flower jumped.
"Whatever it was I swear I didn't do it!" she squeaked, because normally when someone adressed her with her name she was in trouble.

Hilsa gave a puzzled half-laugh. "I'm not sure what you mean. I'm simply pleased to see you. How are Goewyn and Pindra's children doing since you led them back to their mothers?"

* * Meanwhile, I still await NPC response to Woefulgut, after which some other action will need to occur before the moment at which Retaw sees the Marshwiggle.

*Flower*

"Oh, its just, oh nothing, I'm just silly sometimes." mumbles the little cat, "They've been fine, made me a little bed in their rooms, so I sleep with them. Um, and who are you again?"

"I'm Hilsa, the wife of Vandrick the tanner. Since the girl Harmony has no family and isn't afraid of work, my husband and our son are teaching her to work with leather. And I seem to have heard that you've become a messenger!"

*Flower Power*

"Oh, ok. Well thats good about Harmony." says Flower, "Well, for the time being I'm a messenger, I wish I had a friend with me though... To talk to, ya know?"

'Though I'd really rather have Middy over other cats.' she thinks.

"With some non-human Narnians fleeing Narnia in addition to human ones," observed Hilsa, "there are bound to be some _small_ intelligent creatures, who might be willing to ride with you on the Gryphon, assuming you do continue in messenger service."

NOTE, not Talking Mice; they do not yet exist in Narnia's timestream.

Arlis peers up at the Marsh Wiggle. His small eyes narrow slightly, though this is most likely attributable to thought and not to anger.
“I see…well, yes. Of course. We would help, if things were really as dire as you say. Is not your species known, however, for having, er, you’ll excuse me for saying as much, I am sure, a rather…negative outlook on the world? We have heard nothing of hardship here. Indeed, such would be unthinkable, with our good and generous king on the throne. Why should they flee their homes?”

He strikes an officious pose, known to public figures throughout the centuries, and coughs to clear his throat.

“Can you give me evidence of your claim? You ask official sanction, you must have some with you.” He shakes his head. “You cannot expect to go before His Majesty with nothing.

Siawn, meanwhile, has spent the time appraising the captain’s vessel with a practiced eye. He seems to be no stranger to the sea, going from stem to stern, poking here and there, and in general making certain the craft is river-worthy.

“It is more than adequate for the purpose. Your captain has done well for himself.”

He hefts two bags, one his own and one his brother’s, onto the deck with surprising strength.

“When do we sail? It is a fair wind."

Woefulgut's first mate Gareth drew Siawn and Locrian into a detailed discussion of their experience and skills. In turn, he told the brothers more about how the Mer-People had assisted in the successful evacuation by sea.

Captain Woefulgut, meanwhile, glanced around to make sure no one else was listening, then stepped closer to Arlis and said quietly:

"No official of the Archenlandish royal government can _actually_ be unaware of the conquest of your own sister nation, not with the number of Narnian beings who have already fled here and brought the news. I therefore assume that you have been instructed to pretend ignorance, in order to mislead any hostile spies who may have infiltrated your capital. You are wise to try to keep our foes in the dark. But if, hypothetically, you _didn't_ really know what's happening within two days' march of you, you would not need to take a Marshwiggle's word; you could ask any of--in fact, here comes a whole family of them now!"

He turned to beckon a man who stood some fifty paces away with a woman and five children. "Tarnod, please bring your wife and children over here; this gentleman wishes to know the reason why you lately sailed with me!" Woefulgut knew that Tarnod would not mince words; his two younger brothers had been among the earliest humans hacked up into itty bitty pieces by Jadis.

OOC: LO has decided that Jadis is not turning humans to stone; she is just killing them. She told me this shortly after I had produced the first back story for Dar and Mathan. I have changed that accordingly. CF, I would like to inform you of this because it has been an area of contention before.

"Maybe I'll have to look for some sometime." says Flower.

'Maybe one will be Middy.'

Hilsa nodded. "In the meantime, would you care to join Vandrick and me for supper? It's getting close to time for that."

By the time Flower and Hilsa reached the tanner's home, there was other supper company besides: the brothers Dar and Mathan, getting better acquainted with their good-natured new employer.

* * Note that Dar and Mathan were first seen with Lava's tiger Longtail; did Flower meet them before her own flight into Archenland?

OOC: I looked back; Flower and Mid meet the two boys briefly while playing the part of messengers.

Everyone gathered for supper, including Flower. Harmony had done much of the kitchen work, following Hilsa's instructions. Vandrick complimented the girl on the good job, then gave thanks to the Emperor-Over-Sea. Once the meal was underway, Hilsa asked the newly-hired brothers if they had met any other small Narnian creatures who might be interested in riding with Flower on the Gryphon-mail flights.

Flower, being the kind of talking kitten she was, jumped up onto a chair beside Harmony. And every so often her little paw could be seen reaching across the table for something.

When things were too far away for Flower to reach without walking ON the table, Harmony leaned in to move them within her four-legged friend's reach. Meanwhile, Vandrick was telling Dar and Mathan the little he knew about the measures the King was taking to counter any future threat from omnipotent werewolves.
