Introduction Thread II

Hello everyone, I'm John. Well, actually not, but, you'd never be able to pronounce my real name anyway so just call me John if you will. Moving on, I'm new on the forums, and I'm a huge fan of Narnia, hope to have a nice time around here. =)

Welcome John and Skoolz to the Dancing Lawn!
I hope you both enjoy the discussions, camaraderie and the duffer craziness here. See you around!

I've been a military linguist, and have done pretty well with pronouncing names from non-Western-European cultures. I think I'd have a fair chance of getting yours right.

Piece of cake, if my small exposure to Portuguese was correct. Your letter J is pronounced the way the French would pronounce it, and the A is similar to an English short A as in the word "back."

... ditto Copperfox, and the vowel sound is nasalized ;)
Is that right, João?

Yes it is. Although I don't know how french pronounce the J.
Usually when americans pronounce my name they pronounce the O wrong. The first O reads like an U as in "Jules". And the second O is read with the Ã, making it a single sound "ão", nasalized, as you said.

Anyways, just call me John if you prefer, or Barata.

Are you a citizen of Portugal, of Brazil, or elsewhere?

When I was in the U.S. Navy, my ship visited Lisbon in 1990. I loved that city.

Hello John, nice to meet you. I'm Annemarie. Welcome to the forums!

Really?! I thought that my English was terrible... I study English from one year, so for me to write a message is very difficult, also when it's very short!
What language do you speak? Spanish or English?
