kisses in children's/teens literature

Hate Suspian. XD That was useless had no point to the plot.

So.... *don't want to start a fight though I REAAAAAALLY have to ask it* do you all not like disney princesses kisses then? Most of the girls are younger than 18 and all of them, save a few, have a kiss in their movie.
If they can HAVE them, why can't books?

Just saying.

I thought she had the potential to be a cool character, but it didn't work. She was too sexualized and too much like a feminist ideal.

Don't even start. :p But really, I vehemently deplore that part. It was unnecessary. And it was STUPID! *tapes duct-tape over mouth before going further*

*holds lips together and reaches for ducktape*

Hence why I ran off. ;) Hae you ever noticed, though, how Caspian just stands there? Nothing like having a girl force herself on you.

I'm just. kidding. :D

And to Maggie's question about the princess movies, the princesses weren't really depicted as children. At least, not in the case of girls like Cinderella, Snow White, and Belle. To me they are depicted as young women, 18 or so.

Well... I don't like Disney princesses anyway. xD But... I chose to deal with it in Tangled because it was such a cute movie. And, yeah, I felt like they deserved the kiss at the end... :o:p

Snow White, if I'm correct, is actually the youngest disney princess, at 15 years old. ;)

I dunno, I do understand where y'all are coming from and I know there are PLENTY of YA fiction where there is much too much kissing and much too little of anything else.
But there's plenty of stories when the kiss is a great moment - and at least for me - has me cheering.

Your correct, but the stories are the same age wise, plus the Disney Princesses don't look like their age. Aurora is 16? AND LOOKS LIKE THAT? :D:rolleyes:
The stories they are based on, is the main issue with the Romantic issue as they were originally not meant for children. If you haven't seen it, look for my post on fairy tales and the Princess stereo type in the Problem with Pink thread. MRC can vouch for me on this one.

It really depends on the story. If the story is a great one and the main characters are really good and pure I have no problems but I think most of the time it is all about kissing and more. I don't like that. It is okay to be in love because we all are at some point but where is the limit?

I did read stardust, but it ended badly(a little too adult) and it had ONE kiss in it.

Oh, but Stardust is a fairy tale for adults! Lol, it's one of my favorite books, and I love the ending. Sometimes you need them not to live happily ever after.

My favorite YA romance is probably Sophie and Howl in Howl's Moving Castle. *melts*

But I also have a soft spot for Ella and Char in Ella Enchanted. They earn their romance!

Yes on both accounts! too bad Ella Enchanted (2003) was the worst adaptation of a book possible.

1) Yes, BK, I am trying to come up with a list of YA book kisses only. This is not the only place I have asked this question. However, if you feel the need to, go ahead and give the kisses of adult books, just let it be known.

2) CG, only if the kiss in Avatar, the Last Airbender was specifically in a book would it count, and not a book based on an episode or movie. So inky, the Suspian kiss wouldn't count. There were no kisses in Narnia that would qualify in this list.

3) TSI, Even knowing beforehand what was going to happen in "The Book Thief" didn't minimize the effect one bit. That was one of the saddest kisses I remember reading.

I changed the color and made your quote bold, so you knew what I was referring to. I WHOLE HEARTILY disagree with that statement. There were many, many kisses in the Chronicle. While it may not be between a boy and girl, or one you associate with romance per se, you have forgotten all the wonderful kisses my LORD gave throughout the Chronicles.

My favorite and think the very best is in the Last Battle, when Emeth finally meets Aslan (my LORD). It is on page 756-757 if you own the entire Chronicle in one book and states the following:

But the Glorious One bent down his golden head and touched my forehead with his tongue (THAT'S A KISS FOLKS) and said, "Son, thou art welcome,"

Emeth continues on from there with his story but I've made my point. This was also one of the most moving moments for me from the whole Chronicles. It broke me to tears, I have searched my entire life as a christian for GOD to really "get him, understand him." It was during this moment that I finally got what no elder, pastor, teacher or any other christian leader has been able to do. I finally, finally found GOD in all his LOVING glory. I owe a great debt and gratitude to CS Lewis for this book.

It opened my eyes to so many many things I had been taught but could never grasp or fully understand. No kisses in the Chronicles? I suggest you read the entirety again. You have missed many many beautiful kisses.

Very good point! and wisely said!

I HATE that movie!! And it was such a good book too!!!!

I did like Fairest too - Aza and Ijori and the couple kisses they shared were very sweet. It helped that Aza is a character a lot of girls could identify with; she doesn't believe she's pretty, or that she will ever have anyone find her attractive in any way.
Then Ijori comes who loves everything about her even if she isn't the stereotyped beauty everyone else wants. It's not sexualizing younger readers by having them kiss - it helps them shake off the ideas of beauty they may have and letting them know that someone will come along who thinks they're beautiful. It's a wonderful message - especially in today's society.

I love that book! ^_^ It's so sweet, and I didn't mind that kiss. :p I think that book excellently explained why Ella was like she was; why she didn't just run away from serving her step-mother and step-sisters. The romantic scenes were really great- I love the scene where they slide down the stairs. :D

Yeah SoA, the movie was unfathomably awful... :(

OK Defender, you win. Alsan's Lion kisses can count. :p Also I just realized there was one other Narnia kiss, the parting kiss between Jill and Puddle.

Best kiss in a YA book has to be Macy and Wes kissing in The Truth About Forever. Sooo cute. <3 They're the cutest couple ever.

in books/movies/tv shows my favorite kisses are always the ones on the forehead, cheek, hand. They're so much softer, sweeter, and more loving to me.
