Mod Q&A Thread II

PotW, thanks for the answer. Though i didn't mean that a mod was asked to leave, but that a mod asked to be un-mod-ed because they just didn't have the time ;).

IOWW said:
We've tried. None of them will ever come back.

Well, did i tell you about my new job as an employee in an extermination service?:D

Finally, a chance to get into the mod lounge

Well, lieke, the other exterminators went in but didn't come out again. Frankly we love you too much to let that happen to you so we'll keep you out of there for now. However, I think that POTW is going to try a few tricks later to deal with the vermin...if you want to hunt down some tools for him go for it! :D We had a broom but Carl tried to use it and the end got bit off. I'm starting to wonder if it's the killer bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It's cute, but you wouldn't want to pet it. Either that or it's the Badger when he's hungry. We can't see too well back there to figure it out.

Love ya lieke!

Carl's broom getting bitten off wasn't the biggest deal. However, the tooth gouges on the crowbar gave me a bit of a pause. Fortunately, it's been a little quiet back there for a few days, giving us time to think out a strategy. The case-hardened chain should be in any day now, and once we strap HB into the harness, he should be able to squeeze his way back there.

We did get HB's agreement on this, didn't we?

You might make him sign a waver just in case. I hadn't heard about the crowbar. Yikes!!! Maybe we should get Inky and Dern to make some yummy stuff for HB to take back there with him. I'm not sure if it's to appease the vermin or for a last meal, but we won't tell him that. Thanks for trying bro!

Why is it that certain forums appear to be assigned to certain mods (or vice versa) - for example, Dufferland has Derny and Elf of the Grey Havens - but most mods go 'modding' wherever they like?

I'm pretty sure it's because those mods, while they were Squires, could only had Modified powers in those particular forums. Once they became "full" mods, they had could Modify in all forums - but they still remained "forum leaders" in those forums which they had moderated as Squires.

Some mods deal with certain areas because they need specific attention. It's good to have them listed so people know who to go to first for help in those areas. The Stone Table needs a lot of attention because it's got exoplosive subject matter. Some mods go everywhere most of the time, but we all have our little areas we usually flock to. We try to make sure all the basis are covered.

Ok, I actually have a serious question now... :D

Why does the overall total of members appear to have gone down? I mean, it says there are like 5,200 members or something, and I remember seeing it at 8,000 or so once... am I just imagining things, or has the member total gone down?

It has. But those 3000+ "members" weren't members at all, but spammers. Spambots were creating dummy "members" with names like xLowxPricexPharms (and worse - much worse) so as to start threads advertising their "wares". For a while it was a real challenge to keep up with them, but a new version of the forum software and lots of diligence by certain (furry) moderators in ferreting out these false members (perhaps "badgering" would be a better word) managed to choke off these assaults. Once we got ahead of the onslaught, there were weeks on end where we were deleting artificial members by the hundreds. Those deletions brought the user count down, but you can think of it as a correction. Those spam users never were users at all, so the count was artificially inflated.

All kidding aside, our dedicated mod Eveningstar deserves tremendous credit for his diligence in dealing with this problem. Believe me, without his efforts the forum may very well have been swamped by spammers and ceased to exist as a viable online community. The rest of us helped, but he did most of the research and guided us in the most effective strategies. Hats off to the Magister!

Ordinary, commonplace, mundane, typical, run-of-the-mill mods can only ban. High-potential, superior, enabled, brave, thrifty, clean, and reverent Royal Guards can delete accounts - which is what we do with spambots.

thank you very much. his name is schnuffinski schnuffelinski. please handle with care. (i'm just a wee bit concerned because he is a male and pink does weird things to male creatures i heard......)

Your name will continue to show up for 15-20 minutes after you've last been on. That's one reason why the "who's online" list isn't always accurate - sometimes the people shown there have been offline for a while.
