Musicals!

Okay NBeaver,
here is Muppets and a musical:

On a different note, I was listening to the original soundtrack of Camelot in the car (the Braodway cast with the amazing Julie Andrews), and my daughter said, in a rather puzzled voice, "Oh dear, Guinivere forgot who her husband is!"

So much as I love Lerner and Lowe -- and Julie Andrews, Camelot's not on my top ten list.

I didn't say I disliked it, I've just been over exposed to it, which can make it rather grating. Got close to doing it to 'Oz' when I say it for the 13th time in 2 months. Good thing that didn't happen... BTW I own the original cast album LP for Mary Poppins AND I only payed 50 cents ^.^

David Tomlinson was brilliant... you can't get overexposed to "Madam, that is entirely beside the point!!"

Oh God.

Please.

My eyes bleed.

If the fact that a 'Passion of the Christ' joke is made, and that a rather bad reputation singer makes a cameo isn't enough, but this film takes the rather brillant book and turns it into rather stale Muppet material. I've seen rotting fruit that were fresher than that material, and I'm so glad the new Muppet movie is going correct that. But, gosh the only good things I can say about it, is it ignores the MGM film (which is surprising in this day and age) and it gave the dying 'Wonderful World of Disney' some new material (R.I.P. Wonderful World of Disney 1955-2008) :D ok I'm getting down *steps off soapbox*

Anne of Green Gables; and Wicked

Thanks for your notes Sofa... Yikes!!
Actually I have never seen nor do I endorse Muppet Oz, but it was the funniest image that came up when I did an image search of <muppet+musical>. I hope your eyes will recover without too much more pain.

Getting back on topic, I went with some friends to see Anne of Green Gables the Musical last weekend. We had a blast! The script was very faithful to the book although some of the most memorable escapades were left out (notably the Lady of Shallot), but what was there was delightful. The music fit the plot but was not all that memorable -- although I liked Anne and Diana's "Bosom Friends" as well as Gilbert's song about Anne (how exasperating she was, but how she fascinated him because she was like 12 girls in 1). Highlights: Anne's ultra-inauspicious arrival, the Carrots scene, the currant wine fiasco, saving Minnie May, the Avery/Medal scenes, and the ups and downs of Gilbert and Anne... Also, Matthew's death and mourning was handled beautifully. It was all there and much more.

It's been 10 days since the above post and last night my husband took me to see Wicked for our anniversary. It was a spectacular specimen of stagecraft and singing, though the story was --ahem-- disturbing (though not as raunchy as the book which I started but did not get past chapter 1). I'm glad I saw it though -- it certainly is a great polemic against narcissism ;)

No problem! :D
Taking my Best Gal friend to see R&H's Cinderella tonight as a Birthday/Christmas surprise. Hope she likes it because it cost me a very pretty penny and I'm flat broke now.

SofA,
Sounds like you'll have
"... A Lovely Night, A Lovely Night,
A finer night you know you'll never see..."

I did! I could have danced all night all night as well, but after singing in the (winter) rain on the way to the car, I decided to go to my own little corner with my own little chair and be whatever I want to be. Just because :D
All in All it was a wonderful performance , although the play did feel like it could have used a sub plot, I did enjoy the simplicity of it all. :)

Funny the line " A Finer light you know you'll never see..." sounded like " A fire light you know you'll never see..." last night, I thought it was a clever reference to " Keeping the home fire burning". Though that Doesn't make sense since the only one home for Cindy was the animals...

I geeked out today when I found the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers original movie soundtrack on iTunes. I know that I'm getting a gift card for Christmas, and it's going to be one of my first purchases! :D

How fun Aravisk! We watched Seven Brides over the holidays and really enjoyed it too...
...
Although this is not strictly a musical I took my daughter to Toy Story 3 on Ice today and really enjoyed the choreography, staging and songs. The Barbie/Ken pieces were especially hilarious but my favorite was when Jessie danced/skated "When Somebody Loved Me." Ice skating done well is so amazing to watch.

<reviving thread>

I was given 4 tix to You're a Good Man Charlie Brown yesterday. It was such a fun show -- but my favorite character was Snoopy (although Lucy was brilliantly abrasive, crabby and ego-centric)

<thread bump>
I just listened to the complete recording of The Civil War, a non-book musical by Frank Wildhorn (who has also written music for Jekyll and Hyde and a host of other musicals). It was incredibly moving. I've already ordered the score and my daughter plans to do one of the monologues (the nurse tending a critically ill soldier). If you can find this CD set in your local library, check it out!

Into the Woods is brilliant! and seeing it in Central Park would be the perfect environment...

The tickets were free, too! (even though we had to wait in line for 8 hours for them, but it was totally worth it.)

The updates to the costumes/set were fantastic. And the narrator was played by a little kid, rather than by the same actor as the mysterious old man (who was played by the original baker. I met him and got his autograph).

Donna Murphy played the witch and she was just FANTASTIC and it was a really great performance.

How lucky and how fun! That's terrific.

Houston Grand Opera is presenting one of my favorite operas this season, Puccini's La Boheme. I am hoping I can get my husband to take me, although I know it would just be kindness on his part as he can hardly bear to sit through an opera ...

They're also doing a Rossini opera, Italian Girl in Algiers, which I have never heard of, but it looks good. Two operas in one season would be too much for my old man though!

I just saw Into the Woods in Central Park!

It was really great!

I am insanely jealous! I bet it was awesome.

The Hale Center Theater in Salt Lake City is a family friendly theater in the round that puts on six shows a year plus A Christmas Carol every December. Usually four of the six shows are musicals. I can always trust this theater with even my youngest kids, the costumes and dialogue are always appropriate. We just saw 9 to 5 The Musical a week ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. They had cleaned up the language and the storyline a from the 1980 movie and delivered such a powerful & fun performance, I am still laughing at it a week later. Four stars.

I saw a couple musical versions of some of my favorite works of classic literature. I saw "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" in the 8th grade. It was truly spectacular. The Headless Horseman was so huge and scary. It was great! I saw "Anne Of Green Gables" and "Little House On The Prairie"(Not the Melissa Gilbert one) at a local theater. Both were truly spectacular. During the Little House one, the girl playing Laura saw how much I was enjoying it and winked at me. After the show was done we saw the cast going to lunch, and we got to say how much we enjoyed the performance. I also saw a musical version of "Cinderella."
