Musicals!

I'm in a technical theater program at my school, and this year we're doing Singing in the Rain and Into the Woods. I'm working both of them. I'm so excited!!

The high-school here is doing a production of the phantom of opera! And I friend is going to be one of the main characters. I can't remember who though. I will have to ask my sister.

I really like both of those musicals! What a treat to be on crew!
How will you do the rain in the "Singing in the Rain" number? I saw it on stage not long ago and water was actually piped in on the stage from above...

My favorite musicals are
Phantom of the Opera: I love this so much. I discovered it when I found the original cast's version (Crawford is our king) in my mother's stash of CD's and started listening to it. Now i'm obsessed, and even got to play Christine for a school project in musical Theater class.

Les Miserables: I just now started loving it, this year. I decided to watch the musical via youtrube because the version on youtube had Ramin Karminaloo ( 25th anniversary phantom) as Valjean. I loved it automatically. I watched the movie this christmas, and thought that was well done, too.

Wicked: I have yet to see Wicked entirely, since it is not available to watch anywhere on the internet. However, I bought the soundtrack and absolutely fell in love with it.

Long overdue, but I will answer your question.

We had a platform about four and half feet hight, and we place a drawer in the middle of it. Before every show we would pump water into it. Before the scene, we would push the drawer out. We also hanged streamers that looked somewhat like water.

I just saw a musical called Spring Awakening. The music is unbelievably good.

I like the Sound of Music (Julie Andrew's voice is just sensational!)
Singing in the Rain's pretty good too!
Not sure if anyone knows this one (it's a bit old): The Slipper and the Rose.
The songs are just beautiful, and not to mention the waltz in it- stunning!

Slipper and Rose: Is that the Cinderella adaptation that Richard Chamberlain was in? It was pretty good.

Meanwhile, Les Miz RULES!!!!!!!!

I liked the 2012 Les Mis film even better the second time. I could appreciate the story telling better without being overwhelmed by the close ups (I was seated too close the first time I saw it) and almost non-stop singing (however beautiful and moving).

Yes, everybody needs to see it _more_ than once!

Meanwhile, I _detest_ the old musical "Carousel," for offering us a stupid, selfish, irresponsible and even _abusive_ travesty of manhood as a supposedly _romantic_ leading male character! Gag me with a clambake spoon!!

One of the things I loved about Les Mis ( I even bought the soundtrack after I saw the movie) is the fact that it is not a "feel good" movie like a lot of musicals. Jean Val Jean, Fantine, Marius, and Cossette do not take hands at the end and sing something like "We're All In This Together" like in High School Musical.
Rather their last song is all about one thing: Forgiveness, GRace, Love, Hope and Redemption

In fact Les Mis makes you think. You think about the themes of love, grace, forgiveness, sacrifice, and redemption. I'm still thinking about it and I saw it almost a week ago.

Spring Awakening is my least favourite musical of all time and I'm not even kidding.

Billy Eliot or Light in the Piazza would be my least favorite musicals.

Sven-El --
I so agree with your observation on the themes of Les Mis the musical/movie

Hear Hear! (Somewhat delayed response).

There is a relatively new musical coming to Salt Lake City next month based on the 1990 movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. It opened in West End in 2011 and ran in Broadway in 2012 and has shown in a few locations since then. Has anyone seen it? We are thinking of attending, the reviews are pretty good. I imagine it will be very difficult to cast Oda Mae Brown since Whoopi Goldberg made that role so uniquely hers...

Some shows get less attention than I think they deserve. There was, for instance, a musical about Sherlock Holmes, called "Baker Street;" I thought it was pretty good, although perhaps it tried a little too hard to create a Charles Dickens mood as in "Oliver."

So, my favorite musicals-

CATS-- I have the film version and have seen it once on stage. It's excellent both ways.

Les Miserables-- How can anyone not like this? I've only seen the more recent film, though. I'd love to see an earlier version.

The Phantom of the Opera-- The music is excellent, although Raoul is a parody of himself from the book.

Most Things Disney-- Obviously.

@WarriorSatyr: I think it's difficult to portray Raoul. Especially since his character in the book is kind of a mirror of Erik, with both doing basicially the same cruel things in different contexts.
