"Well, I'll _watch_ you," he replied, slipping in a kiss to her nose. "But I spent all my ribcage credit carrying you this morning, so I won't try any boarding myself."

"I assume that your board and helmet are in the trunk of your car?" he asked, beginning to walk in that direction hand in hand with her.

When they arrived at the skateboard ramp, which was far across the spacious park from where they had been talking, a speaker was playing loud music from one of the radio stations that were broadcasting live at the park. The announcer, in fact, had dedicated the song TO the skateboarders. Alipang looked forward to seeing his sister display her flashy moves. It was ALMOST enough to make him forget his disappointment at finding no sign of Kim. Well, maybe she ACTUALLY moved away to Malibu...

Alipang cheered every maneuver by Chilena. She was outdoing a boy who up to then had been showing the fanciest technique of any present. This boy was not a gang member, but was a misguided admirer of gang members. Angry at being outdone, he watched his chance...then, in a move clearly done on purpose, forearm-clotheslined Chilena.

The girl went flying one way, her skateboard another. Chilena's helmet and pads saved her from any serious injury, but the back of her shirt was ripped as she came down. Horrified, Alipang ran to her.

Alipang knew enough about fractures to test for them. Chilena had none that he could detect. He carried her to a grassy spot, laid her down, kissed her tenderly...and then...

The bully, Mac by name, was laughing at his own "cleverness" as he soared up and down the ramp. He didn't know Alipang Havens. He got his first introduction when a figure on foot ran an ascending arc right UP the ramp, caught him by the throat, yanked him right off HIS board, dragged him back down the ramp, slammed him onto the ground and planted a knee on his chest, squeezing the breath out. There was killing in the Filipino boy's eyes as he reached for the balisong in his pocket--

But just then, Wilson Kramer was there, lifting Alipang bodily off of the troublemaker. "Son, I don't think I want to see what's in your pocket; leave me in ignorance." To the bully he said, "You're under arrest for assault." To Alipang: "Go back to your sister; she needs you;" then Kramer turned his attention to handcuffing the bully.

"It isn't broken, sweets, just bruised."

Another sheriff's deputy confirmed this when reaching the scene. There was no fracture. The same deputy took a statement from Chilena as quickly as possible; other kids who had seen the incident confirmed the facts. Dr. and Mrs. Havens, with Melody and Harmony, were there also in a matter of minutes, anxiously clustering around Chilena.

Eric did his own careful test of his daughter's arm. "I promise you, honey, it isn't broken."

"I've been beaten up enough times to know that a bruise can _feel_ as bad as a fracture," Alipang told her. "I don't think you'll need to be hospitalized. Just as well; the food's boring;" and he kissed her again.

A paramedic soon added his agreement that no ambulance was required. "Have someone take you home and keep ice on the bruise."

Alipang began to lift her, then suddenly collapsed with a grunt of pain. Grabbing and pinning his sister's assailant had put too much strain on his cracked rib; he couldn't lift her. So their Dad lifted her.

"BOTH of you need to go home," said their mother. "I'll ask Mr. Kramer to do the spoken introduction for the--"

"Mom, no!" Alipang protested. "It's just a spasm; it's fading already."

"To be cautious, I'll take you to the X-ray machine at the Free Clinic," said Eric to Chilena. "We get head-of-the-line privileges for moments like this."

At the clinic, X-rays revealed just a hairline fracture in the upper arm: still nothing requiring hospital admission, but calling for a plastic brace to be fitted to her arm.

OOC: Now are you happy, Hannah?
