*grumbles* A combinaiton of Internet, Cat, and Laptop ate my previous detailed reply, but I stall try to recall the words.

To Avaris I belive I recalled the account of the series 'Deep Space Nine', and the religious belives of the Bajoran people. Particularly one important moment (I will reference the episode in detail if no-one recalls it) In which the 'gods' of the Bajoran people, with no science or technobabble commit an act of devine intervention in responce to the scarfise of Ben Sisko. Without this act of intervention the entire Alpha quadrent would have been destroyed and it is made quite clear that our hero's the humans and their science could of done nothing to stop it.

To me that is a clear suggestion that both reason -and- faith are needed to surive, and that all the science in the world will not protect a faithless man. Now obviously this was shot after GR had passed on, but the series was designed by him, and exists as part of his legacy, and is a strong part of 'Old Star Trek' (As opposed to the 'New Trek' we are discussing in the context of the new movie. (And it's impending sequal).

Now, back to Kirk. Now I know that he was a womaniser, and a flawed man, I make no attempt to defend it. But I do not belive that means he can not also be a good one. Particularly as his womanising ways where shown to have concquences. (Carol Marcus, and the fallout with her was hardly portrayed as a light concequence, and indeed his son -died- partially as a result of his lack of care.)

I told Lynne (Lady Badger) that I'm going to see the Star Trek movie today. I added, "Hey, I'm a man...I need my space."

She should have been a baseball player, with that kind of aim.... ;)

Hey, Paramount actually sent a copy of the movie to the International Space Station so the crew could watch it...I wonder what they thought. Lol.

@ AH: I'm honestly becoming tired of debating the morality of STar Trek and whether or not this new Trek is true to the original. Personally, I'd rather just discuss Trek and not the finer points of philosophy regarding it. Not to mention, nobody else seems very willing to join in an actual discussion of the series and films. But I will say this: Roddenberry was not involved with DS9, Voyager or Enterprise. He died in 1991, only a few years after Next Gen premiered. So, he didn't have a part in creating those series. But he DID have a role in creating TOS and most of the films up until probably Generations.

Actually, Generations was released in 1996, a few years after Next Gen had it's sereis finale.

But to answere amuch earlier question you had, I did notice that parts of Nero's ship were still entact. Possible foes for sequals perhaps?

So now that they have a new franchsie, which villians should the face? I'd like to see the Klingon's as bad guys again ( they were more interesting then the Borg).

Semi random note, I was wacthing a rerun of Star Trek TOS, and durring the commercial breaks they had an add for a listening device that looked oddly like Uhurah's.

Well, Roddenberry may or m ay not have written scripts for later films; I don't know, which is why I said that. ;) But thanks for correcting me anyway. :)

I don't think they should face down Klingons; frankly that plot has gotten old, what with all the other films (original series) featuring Klingons' or Klingon's culture as being bad. I mean, if they wanted to incorporate Klingons into sequels, that's fine, but I'd like to see something new, if possible. They couldn't use the Borg, because weren't they first introduced in Next Gen?

Lynne and I saw the movie today. It was better than I expected. The trailers out there give the impression that it's a sort of Young Guns in space. The actual film is thoughtful and plausible and ... well I can't say it without a spoiler, so I won't, but I'LL THINK IT. When James T. Kirk was named...for those of you who saw it, you'll understand...it was heart wrenching.

It felt like a very reverent treatment of the Trek franchise. Especially at the very end. My my.

I agree with the naming of James T Kirk, ES. The first time I saw the movie, I thought oh how touching and sad at the same time. The second viewing I teared up a tiny bit, just knowing what was coming but I was also focused on getting to see Chris Pine :D But the 3rd time (yes, I've seen it 3 times already and I'm not a trekkie...so sad), anyway this last time I was crying. I think this time I put myself in the shoes of the dad who is sacrificing his life to save others yet knowing he never got to say a real goodbye to his wife or see his son...it was heartbreaking. And then my friends were laughing because I'm crying 3 minutes into a movie. Oh well.

It's no secret that ILM, who create the main visual effects for both Star Wars and most of the Trek films, have put in hidden salutes to Star Wars; an example being a Millenium Falcon in First contact during the Battle with the Borg in the beginning. In fact, the Star Trek page on Facebook is running a contest asking fans which scene R2 is in. I entered, but I only guessed.

@ES: Here here! I loved how they named Kirk. That entire scene was heart wrenching and was done beautifully. I nearly cried, but didn't because I didn't know if people would think me funny! Next time, though, I'll be sure to cry. ;) :)

The naming of Kirk was heart wrenching, but nto as sad for me as the death of Amanda. She is so important to SPock as a cahracter as she is the only person who can help him navigate through both his Vulcan and human sides. It will be interesting to see how her absense affects him. Granted Wynona Ryder's aged make-up was about as bad as in Edward Siscorhands, but I ignored it and focused on the character.

A good point on Klingon's being over done. Correct the Borg were introduced in Next gen, and are in a completly different Quadrent.

Well, technically since this was an alternative universe\timeline kind of film, Vulcan, Romulus, and Amanda should be restored. We all know that those three were in existence in TOS and the films.

I just got back from seeing it! OH MY GOODNESS! It was tons better than I expected. And I agree with ES, the beginning with the naming and also the end with Spock original choked me up. I absolutely love that they were able to get him into this movie and say those most classic of lines at the very end.

I am sad though, my brother who saw it a couple times said to look out for a Tribble. He said that there was a tribble in the background in one of the scenes set as a kind of pet. I was too focused on the movie to really look out for it...*sigh* I guess I'll just have to see it again. :p

Haha, for me, it was hard to focus on the actual film; there were so many hotties it nearly melted the screen. :p

No, but seriously, I didn't see a lot of what people say was in the film; I usually don't pay much attention to little things like that.,

Lol. I will say this: Chris Pine is much hotter than William Shatner was at that age. :D And like I tell everybody, I have a crush on bones for the first time ever. Deforest, I just loved his personality in portraying Bones, but Karl, well.... *sighs*

:p

As far as off screen goes, DeForest Kelley (Dee to his friends) was the finest person in the original series and the most experienced and professional actor. Oddly enough he originally wanted to be a doctor. (Jim, I'm a doctor, not an actor!) A few days before his death, an award was instituted for people who made a real difference in western/frontier films, the golden boot. He received that award and it was presented to him in his hospital bed. When he got it, he wept.

A close second would have to be Mark Leonard (Sorek). He was an amazing man who ironically wanted to be an ambassador, not an actor.

Both of these fine folks are now in the Final Frontier. It choked me up when I saw one scene in the original series where Scotty was in sick bay and Dr. McCoy and Nurse Chapel were with him. It occurred to me that every one of them were gone...(sigh).

Only thing is, Deforest could get pretty raunchy. I can't watch any of his other films because for me, he will always be Bones. Same thing with LEonard Nimoy; he will always be Spock to me, because that's all I've ever known him for.

I'm not a fan of how the new Spock looked. to me, and maybe it was just because of how Karl played it, but the new Bones seemed most like the original. I'm thinking that because it seemed like Karl got the personality of Bones down pat.

maybe he dyed his hair later on.:p
I think the reason his accent was thicker than it was in the original series was that he was not used to people with american accents, and picked it up a little when he got older.:D

I don't know if any one else felt this way, but after seeing this movei ( as well as the earlier ones, and the syndicated episodes of TOS) I felt that Spock was the better leader then Kirk. I also noticed Spock was the better fighter, both at hand to hand combat and in terms of shootinga ccuracy, wheras Kirk is more of a bar brawler.

Did any one else think that Scotty's accent soudned more like Pippin in Lord of the Rings and less like James Doohan's?

hi... i am not a huge fan of startrek but i am thinking of seeing the new movie and wondering if any one has seen it and if they liked it?
