I think a Cliff fell over, and then a whale landed, and then a bunch of little carrots popped up all over the place. Voilà, duffers!
 
I was eating baby carrots, not baby carrot tops!! Sillies!! I wonder though, if baby carrot tops taste like carrots!!!

Or perhaps the primeval insane asylum exploded, and over a process of many millions of years, its various fragments (notably bits of CW, walls, cacti and a butter knife) evolved into live things called Duffers, who make the dinosaurs look tame....
 
Not all the CW turned into Duffers. Some of it returned to CW, and POtW processed it and turned it into the deadly CW that has slain so many innocents. However, some of us prefer organic CW....
