Vissarion, in turn, tells Jade about (1) meeting what seemed to be a past tormentor of Ivan's, and (2) seeing a creature resembling Vissarion's foes, but not identical, the new creature showing no hostile intent. The swordsman concludes: "It must have seen us, but it took no notice of us. It flew off, still in what you might call a phased condition, toward the area where we found signs of humanoid presence before. Speaking of people being phased, ought not your comrades to be emerging by now?"

"Not if Meridia found danger, or if there went something wrong with Verra's group. My guess is that the children need food or something and they are taking a breather. But if Meridia found danger then Verra and the others will be heading the way that we came."

"Well, since you got the results you sought from this carcass, and are confident of your own ability and your friends' ability to take care of yourselves, I believe that my greatest usefulness [OOC: and a way to take Vissarion offstage until Alice IS ready to start handling him] will be to scout out those people Ivan saw off that way. Ivan, I must ask you to stay with Jade; you would not be able to keep up with my pace. I have plenty of experience of travelling and tracking by night; I want to try to locate the town or camp of those people, and get an idea of whether they are likely to be friendly."

"Ivan, God hasn't killed you for the same reason I haven't killed you. If 'love' sounds too syrupy to you, call it mercy." Then Vissarion waits for Jade to acknowledge their presence.

"Mercy works." Ivan shrugged, "And try not to get yourself killed when you go wandering off. Friends of mine have a tendency to do that."

The swordsman smiled, grasping both of Ivan's shoulders. "That's why you hesitate to _call_ me a friend: because you don't want me to die. Ivan, old chap, you have a soft spot under that spiky armor. Before I get going: tell me something about that former tormentor of yours. If he should prove, somehow, NOT to have died, so that he still is mortal, what strengths and weaknesses would you expect him to have?"

"Well, I suppose it's this 'soft spot' that keeps me from being a complete barbarian. I'm at least a bit human. But it's the spiky armor that keeps me from falling to pieces. I try to squelch the 'soft spot', but that never worked. And...what the hell....It's good for me, I guess. Until I loose someone again. So don't die." He glared at Vissarion.
"And as for my old Master....I really don't know that much about him. He's an elf, which means to kill him you need to rip him nearly to pieces. When I killed him the first time, I tore out both his heart and his throat. He's immortal. No disease can kill him, old age will never harm him. I've heard an elf's soul can go into another creatures dead body... but I don't know about that. I'm not being very helpful, am I?"

"Please do. In fact, show him no mercy at all. Although slicing and dicing will be difficult. Until he's in pieces, he can still attack you." He glanced meaningfully at Vissarion, as if to say: 'Please be careful.', but said nothing.

"You've seen how many tentacles those monsters have," the swordsman reminded Ivan. "With only two arms myself, if I _weren't_ extremely fast in a fight, I'd have been helplessly pinned and then slowly killed by the very first one of the creatures I took on. I won't underestimate your enemy...but HE'D be wise not to underestimate ME."

By the time the unfamiliar sun actually did set, Vissarion was on his way, both his weapons already in hand, just in case. On the first excursion, because he had been carrying Ivan, he had paid particular attention to the consistency of the ground; what he had absorbed in his mind then, helped him now to lope along with confidence. Still, he was cautious--for if this world had a moon, it had not yet risen. At least there were stars; and he was not slow to identify a constellation by which he could orient himself, so as not to travel in circles without realizing it.

Vissarion skillfully presses on through the night, ranging much farther than he and Ivan had ventured before. Eventually he hears voices....singing.

The words of the song are not understandable to him--which gives him his first new piece of information about the locals. They must not be closely connected with the vast castle-or-whatever-it-is, because their speech is not affected by the power which makes people able to understand each other. But the melody and mood of the song suggest a peaceful tribe or nation, with people capable of love and friendship.

Drawing closer to the sound, he discovers that there is a camp with twenty or more tents. A bonfire burns in the open central space, and the singers are grouped around it. The swordsman can see that there are children and old people, as well as men and women in their prime--thus, extended families. Metal tools and weapons are present, meaning that they are not utterly primitive.

And there are no sentries. This could mean that they simply have no cause to expect any danger; or it could mean that they have protection unseen to human eyes. Vissarion remembers the creature Ivan saw, similar to the evil monsters but not identical; perhaps this being is friendly to the natives, and watches over them?

Even as he thinks this, Vissarion feels as if something has touched him, like a cool breeze if breezes could be almost solid. He feels as if something has just inspected him...and decided that he is not an enemy. But nothing else occurs to elaborate on this.

After listening to more of the singing, Vissarion decides not to make himself known to the nomads just yet. First he will return and tell Jade what he has found out so far. Her abilities may be just the thing to make possible a friendly contact with these tent-dwellers...and to determine if there actually is a friendly version of the tentacle-demons hovering around.

Vissarion the swordsman had been apart from the others for some time, because he knows that the phasing tentacled monsters are particularly after him, and he didn't want to bring danger on the others. But his aviodance DIDN'T make them safe after all. Ivan the cynic was captured by one monster in an attempt to get at Vissarion with a human shield. Vissarion, fortunately, did a Dirty Harry: killing the monster unexpectedly fast, before it could even finish its threat.

At the time, Vissarion had just been breaking open a bricked-over window to gain acess to the outside world. So, unsure how soon they would be able to find Lisbeth, Darron, Jade, etc., Vissarion decided to take Ivan with him in an attempt to find humans living outside. They did see that there WERE people, but failed to get close to them. Eventually they returned to the castle, and found the main group.

Meanwhile, some new characters had "beamed in"--including yours, I believe, Destiny--to join the main group. Verragoe and Meridia were trying to guide them to an exit as Vissarion and Ivan showed up. Despite being told that there was a plain and simple physical way out, Verragoe and Meridia preferred to keep on with their "high-tech" movement. Jade, however, went outside with the two men, hoping at first to communicate with the tentacled demons; but Vissarion, who knows more about them (since they originate in my story), assured Jade that the things were thoroughly wicked and were not to be reasoned with. So Jade changed her plan to biologically analyzing one to find its vulnerabilities. Vissarion obligingly killed the next one that could be lured into attacking him.

While Jade was examining the dead monster, Vissarion and Ivan explored the exterior of the huge building. They encountered two things of interest: a monster SIMILAR BUT NOT IDENTICAL to the familiar enemy, one which passed by the men with no threatening action...and a sort of evil elf known to Ivan, who DID threaten them but was put to retreat when a prayer by Vissarion brought divine intervention to deprive the evil elf of his futuristic weapons. After telling this to Jade, Vissarion headed off as night was falling, in a fresh attempt to locate the indigenous humanoids.

The party still inside the building has had some discussion of a violin which is especially important to some characters, for reasons I myself don't know yet. Lisbeth is still angry at Darron for his past faults.

Does that help?

The terrain was more familiar going back than outward bound, so Vissarion made even better time returning, his deep wells of endurance making light of the distance run. He expected that whatever Meridia and Verragoe thought they had to do inside the castle would be finished by now, so that everyone ought to be outside by the time he would rejoin them.

D-L, see if you can get Kim to decide if Meridia and Verragoe are finished with their indoor activities yet. If so, then your character and others can be in a position to learn when Jade learns that Vissarion observed a camp of the native people and that he could NOT understand their language.

Not singling out anyone individually, I have seen roleplayers be unwilling to go back even ONE page to find out things. So here is a replay of what happened with Vissarion one page back; this is the information he will report to Jade and whomever he finds with her....

Finally the last person was out. Meridia had found a tunnel that led them to safety on the outside. She had not met any of the monsters, and was glad of it.

"So what now?" She asked Verra as they huddled in the open air.

"We wait for the others," she said her voice and face as complacent as always. Suddenly she saw a hand wave to the group. It was Jade.

Jade crooned exaclty like an owl. This was her usual signal that everything was safe and secure. Then she called like a great eagle, the sound, she knew, would be loud and earth shattering. This was her sign that she had information or had found something.

Verra led to the group to her, crouching low to blend with the ground. Once they reached her on a mound, Verra saw the dead monster as well as Vissarian and Ivan.

"What's going on?" She whispered.

"Vissarian has just told me of a native people here. They are behind us some ways off. I am going over there to talk to them. Meri I'll need you if anything should happen. Oh and," she pointed to the monster and smiled, "we got enough info to annialate them."

"Good good."

"So it will just be you and me?"

"I dont think by having alot of people come with us will be any good. Two isn't a threat, but three or four or more seems too much. Plus I dont want to endanger our people or theirs."

"All right," says Vissarion (having described his route very thoroughly to the women), "I'll help keep watch over the flock here. If it gets really cold while you're gone, we might go back inside, but not very far in. Or we might see if we can build lean-to's. Don't forget that there may be at least one phasing creature that ISN'T hostile. The one Ivan saw had hands, at least four of them."

"Phasing creature?" Verra said.

"Ok well fill her in, and lets go Meri."

Meridia took Jade's hand and they left toward the natives.
