The Chronicles of Narnia has captured the imaginations of both cinema-goers and readers in Maitland this year.
Both the film and the book topped the list of the most popular titles in both categories according to Angus and Robertson’s Green Hills store and Reading Cinemas.
It is the adventures of four siblings and their journey through a wardrobe to the magical kingdom of Narnia that drew the most attention, both on the cinema screen and on paper.
C.S. Lewis’s tale of the defeat by a courageous lion and four children of an evil queen who cursed Narnia with an eternal winter made it a popular choice for readers, a spokesperson for Angus and Robertson said.
Other popular titles were J.K. Rowling’s latest Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Robert G. Barrett’s Crime Scene Cessnock.
Maitland’s top movies were all big budget adventure releases, Reading Cinema complex manager Crosley Carpenter said.
“The top movie by far and away was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, followed by King Kong and of course the old favourite, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” he said.
Mr Carpenter said it was no accident that the top three movies were recent releases.
“Certainly in Australia the biggest movie season is the Christmas holidays,” Mr Carpenter said.
