In Memoriam: Natasha Richardson dies at 45

Natasha RichardsonI was optimistic about her condition, and sadly I was wrong. Aslan’s voice actor Liam Neeson’s wife, actress Natasha Richardson has passed away due to the injuries she suffered while learning how to ski.

It wasn’t but a year ago when I saw her in New York, full of life and I wasn’t really sure what I would have said to her, had I the guts to go up and talk to her.

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

Natasha Richardson, who more than upheld her lineage as part of one of the great acting dynasties by establishing an eclectic career in film, TV and theater, where she earned a Tony in 1998 for her performance as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret,” died Wednesday in New York. She was 45.

Richardson suffered a head injury while taking a skiing lesson Monday at the Mont Tremblant resort north of Montreal. Although she initially showed no visible signs of injury, she developed a headache about an hour later and was taken first to a local hospital in Ste. Agathe, Quebec, and then was transferred to the Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal.

On Tuesday, she was transported to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where her family, including husband Liam Neeson and her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, gathered to keep vigil.

Alan Nierob, the Los Angeles-based publicist for Neeson, confirmed her death in a written statement that did not give details on the cause of death. Reports indicated that Richardson was removed from life support Wednesday.

Her death was announced Wednesday evening in New York by a spokesman for the family who said: “Liam Neeson, his sons and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

  1. Whoa!!!! I just heard about that, but didn’t know that she was Liam Neeson’s wife! My sympathies are with he and his family. 🙁

  2. This is so tragic. Like many others, I didn’t know her condition was that dire. My prayers go out to her and her family.

  3. I was shocked when I found out on the news about this tragic event. My condolences to Mr. Neeson and the family and friends of Natasha Richardson. I am so sorry to them for this sudden tragic loss. They will be in my prayers.

  4. Like many people, I was really upset when I first heard this shocking news. I can only recall watching Natasha Richardson in “The Parent Trap” almost a decade ago. When I was a boy, I really thought that was a wonderful film remake of the original. Amazingly, Lindsay Lohan was actually on her best and most cutest behavior in those days!

Seriously though, I think that I probably feel the most pain for the great Vanessa Redgrave, as it is always terribly heart-breaking when your child goes to see God before you do. I would have so loved to have seen both Ms. Redgrave and her daughter perform on the same stage in a play as they had planned to do for a long time.

I also feel so utterly sad for our favorite Lion hero and kindly gentleman actor Liam Neeson and his two beautiful sons. I wish them all the best and my prayers in this tragic time. Personally, I have great faith that Ms. Richardson is now in Heaven with God enjoying the type of peace and joy unknown to any human being living on Earth.

With God’s limitless goodness and grace, hopefully we can meet Ms. Richardson one day in person whenever our time comes and thank her for her wonderful and generous life among us!

  5. I feel so bad for Mr. Neeson! How he must be feeling. I heard that he and his son were very devastated about the accident. I pray God will comfort them or if they don’t know God that this will bring them closer to Him. Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring us to our senses. That’s truth sometimes, sadly. I wish tragedy’s didn’t have to happen like that.
My most heartfelt sympathies towards the family and friends.

  6. So much loss for one year 2009. Head trama is the scariest types of injury I can imagine. I almost lost my own mother at 56 yrs young due to brain injury. How can some be saved while others are not? Neeson family I hope they know many people share their pain and will keep a place in their heart for the loss of Mrs. Richardson.
