Franciscan University has a beautiful campus. I have been there five times, and have friends that attend school there. Walden Media’s Chip Flaherty is going there to speak on the power of story and film, as part of their Distinguished Speaker Series:
Chip Flaherty, executive vice president of Walden Media, will speak on the power of story and the world of filmmaking at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
His talk, “Story, Movies and You,” will be held in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery of the J. C. Williams Center at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13. It is free and open to the public.
Flaherty will share stories and video clips from his work in cinema. Walden Media is known for family-friendly works such as the Chronicles of Narnia films, Because of Winn-Dixie, Nim’s Island, and more. The company is a strong supporter of education, and bases many of its films on books in an effort to inspire children to read.
Sponsored by the Franciscan University Advancement Office, the Distinguished Speaker Series features leaders who are recognized for exemplary service to the Church and society.
Wow… I love Narnia
I’m from Steubenville, but I’m away at college. I’m so jelous cause all my friends go to Franciscan! It is a nice campus…I know cause I worked grounds for a year there lol! Well that’s really cool.

Awesome, that’s great! I also texted a friend of mine about the event! Told him to tell Chip I said hello, if he goes.
Stubenville ohio!? my brthrs and sstrs have both ben there
My friend went to the event tonight and she said that he only talked about Narnia for like 10 minutes. At least he mentioned it! I’ll try to talk to her more about it and post more later.
A friend of mine also went tonight and got his picture with Chip. Hopefully I’ll have an update, but do tell when you hear more about it!
Here’s the link for the article on Franciscan University’s school paper website:

Here’s some notes that my friend took on the Narnia section:
-Lewis said we have to tell kids stories of bravery because if you don’t when they do face adversity they will feel powerless.
-If the 3rd Narnia movie does well,, people will probably start looking at all of CS Lewis’s works (The Space Trilogy, etc.).
-On the power of a story:
The evil power of King Miraz
-bans certain stories
No Pevensie’s, no Aslan, no Golden Age
-no hope or inspiration; without these stories of hope, there is no faith
The stories that are told shape a country, a culture, a people
-defeating a dragon
-The 3rd movie was filmed in New Zealand because 1) subsidies (save $); 2) Peter Jackson filmed LOTR there (there’s a talented crew already over there)
-Fox is distributing Narnia which is a big revenue and they’re fired up about it.
(In about 2 months or so, I’m told that the video/audio of the event should be up on the school website.)
Sorry if those don’t make a lot of sense– I’m basically typing what my friend wrote for notes.
This is really cool news. I’ve been to the campus (visited in high school when I thought about going to school there). It is soooooooo beautiful.
