Dawn Treader Official Cover Art for Blu-ray and DVD Revealed

If you look at our story about pre-ordering the Blu-ray or DVD of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, you’ll notice that I have updated the cover art for the film.  The cover art is beautiful, and definitely trumps the art from all of the Prince Caspian releases (it should have been this good).  An official announcement of the release, including what special features we can look forward to, should be coming soon.

Here’s the DVD cover art:

Personally, I think King Caspian belongs on the cover.  I can understand why The White Witch is there, purely for marketing reasons as Tilda Swinton is a face that many people know, plus it connects with the audiences memories.  However, Ben Barnes’ role as King Caspian was much larger in the film, and he should be featured.

I do like the purple on the cover, as I commented below that it is meant to evoke the purple sail on the Dawn Treader.  When you look at it, the purple behind and around the title art helps to draw the eye to the Dawn Treader in the corner.  This is a classic design technique and is very well executed.

Something that I should point out is that sometimes contracts will say whether or not a character appears in promotional material, posters or DVD/Blu-ray cover art.  I don’t know what Tilda’s contract says, however, as I have seen covers for movies she’s been in that she’s not on the cover for, but it isn’t always the case.  I don’t think that contracts are the reason for this cover art, either, I just wanted to point out that it sometimes happens.

  1. *hypervenaltes* ITS PURPLE!!!!!!!! =O =D
That alone makes it the most awsomeatic of all the DVD covers thus far. xD It looks stunning. =D

    • This is something that is going to be tough to do, since Disney did the first two and Fox did the third. However, Walden Media is the common link that also has the rights, and I’ve heard word they may be working things out.

  2. they put WW there but not Caspian…really weird. Wonder if they considered him box-office jinx…

  3. Umm,sorry but PC had probally the best cover art!!

    I like this cover…but It looks kind of kid-ish..like it’s for a kids animation…

    • I disagree! PC had an almost Blueray looking color if you know what I mean (so clear and crisp looking) But I like how they kept this old fashioned and regal! Aslans mane contrasted with the purple makes it look regal! The only two things I don’t like are that Edmund’s arms looks huge! (probably because his sleeve is so puffy! And the white witch is there, and looking very ugly!

  4. The cover looks good except for Caspian should be on it but the movie itself is lacking the book is better

  5. You know seeing this I would have preferred seeing the purple in the color scheme to begin, albeit in a deeper shade, definitely regal. After all the White Witch was defeated… Miraz is Gone, Caspian is the true king, and there is peace (or in the movie so they think…) I think Royal Purples, Golds, and Jewel Tones suit it well

    • OMG I was thinking of the same thing! if you look I posted a post a little bit above yours about the new case being regal!, and I hadn’t even seen yours!

  6. I just don’t get why the White Witch is even on the cover. Where is Caspian?? Other then that, I think it is really beautiful.

    • the white witch is on the cover solely because she is a famous oscar winning actress, unlike any of the other cast. caspian is not there because he was front and center on a movie called “Prince Caspian”. and they certainly have made it clear they are distancing themselves from that one. Poor Ben. an outcast from his own favorite narnia book. bummer.

  7. I just noticed that the White Witch is there as if she is a main character, which is not true, and the two disc edition looks like a one disc case. At last give it a slide cover so it can match LWW and PC ones on my shelf. Oh well, At least the cover is nice. Where is Caspian? He is a main character too.

  8. WHERE IS CASPIAN!? that is my first thought. they should have caspian instead of the witch. besides that looks really cool.

    • I most heartily agree. As I also have the book and have read it, Caspian is a much more prominent character, not the white witch! Love the purple! It may match the Dawn Treader’s sail, but I tend to think that they may have used it because it is the color most used in royality and Aslan is the KING of Narnia plus Caspian is now King, also. Can’t wait until the movie comes out, as I did not get the theaters to see it!

  9. They keep using the White Witch (aka Tilda) because her performance in the first movie was so good and appreciated by fans that they worked her into the next two movies (when in all actuality she really didn’t have a part in the books). I guess they still think she’s selling the series (which I really enjoy her… she’s so good at being evil and sly).

But to the royalty issue, in all honesty the kids are the true royalty of the series. I say drop Reepicheep, move the ship up to his spot, and put Caspian in… 😉

I’m just sad to think that they’re considering this to be the last movie… 🙁 I hope they are planning to do The Last Battle to reunite everyone!!!

  10. One thing I do like about this cover is that I see no sign of a company logo anywhere. Maybe they’ll add them on later but I like seeing this being focussed on the movie itself.

  11. The cover (esp. the blu ray) look gorgeous. Colorful, fantasy-ish, storybook like. Unlike the poster, with dull drab blue grey colors. and thank god they used a better picture of lucy, the poster one was horrendous. I wonder if they had used this in the advertising if it would have portrayed the feeling of narnia better, and would have helped the box office. It certainly looks more appealing to me-

  12. How easy will it be to recall the mood of watching VODT with that cover 🙂 Really brings back the movie.

Caspian (an aside, i know i should it is King Caspian For VODT but i really think he’s more a natural Prince in character & those elements of character B Barnes best moments in film) will probably be well represented on the back of the cover.

Caspian’s a Narnian, where as Edmund, Lucy & Eustace are not, so in a sense they should be represented separate from Caspian. The White Witch represents the evil brought into Narnia through our world, & although she’s not the green mist itself, she is it’s most resonant symbol in the film, via Edmund, for the audience.

Having her kind of blowing the sails of the Dawn Treader is cool in a style like Greek Myths too, with the gods doing all those type of things to the mortals on their adventures.

  13. Very cool…I think it would be cool if King Caspian was on the cover too, but what’s done is done.(= I can’t (well I can) wait to see what the special features will be!

    • Haha,,the first thing I noticed was that Caspian was not there and the witch was instead of him…I love the royal colour..But what’s done is done.Afterall ,I think it looks great..

  14. Despite having very minor roles in the movie, the White Witch and Aslan are prominently featured on the cover.

  15. A beautiful cover that will no doubt get everyone’s attention who passes it by – admittedly I don’t like the WW being on there, but marketing wise… The WW is better known than Caspian. Oh well. I suppose a slight cover sacrifice to possibly gain a bit more money isn’t too bad. And as someone else said, he probably will be on the back, so that should make up for it :P.

Aside from that, the cover is BEAUTIFUL, and I LOVE the bluray one! Much better pic of Lucy, and just the entire cover is very beautiful, even more so than two other two movies :P. Can’t wait for it to come out!!

(A side note, is preordering a good idea? Will it actually ship the exact day it comes out or would it be best to buy it later?)

  16. I love de design it’s really beautifull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But i’m really mad of with the white witch
I mean what she is doing there????? And no caspian????? It’s ridiculous I mean they really need to get over it about her!!!!!!!!!! She’s not a main charater!!!!!!!!

And aslan’s face I don’t like that picture since the very begining cuz he looks very sad and make me feel it’s a drama movie which is not!!!!!

Besides it’s really pretty cover!!!!!!!! Way better than caspian

I hope in bluray will be with slip case!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. So much better than the PC cover… That one seemed a little too carelessly put together in my opinion. Didn’t go well with the feeling of the movie at all. I am glad that Aslan is back in the center of the cover. In the PC cover, he seemed like a side thought. I understand why Caspian was the center of the cover since he was the title character, but still, Aslan should always be in the center.
