The Silver Chair: A Guide to Auditions for Jill Pole

The Silver ChairHow can I audition to be Jill Pole in The Silver Chair? At the time of this writing, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair has not been given the green-light. However, that hasn’t stopped the e-mails from coming in asking for the role of Jill Pole in the movie.  In fact, the absolute number one request we have gotten since The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was just announced for production has been the role of Jill Pole in The Silver Chair. It seems a lot of girls want to be her, more than any other role in the series. We have been inundated with requests to audition and felt the need to address this question.

I have a few tips for those looking for an audition for the role, as well as some information about where we are at right now with the film. We are not in charge of casting, though, so please refrain from asking us for an audition. We cannot grant you one, nor can we send any contact information on to any casting directors. Requests in the comments also cannot be granted or guaranteed.

1. Pre-Production

Pre-production encompasses a lot, including script writing, storyboarding and character design and casting. It even begins, at times, prior to a film getting funding from a studio (part of the green-light process). The Hobbit is one of those movies that was in pre-production for the last few years and only recently was given the go-ahead.

Sometimes a studio will hire a writer onto a movie that hasn’t yet been given the green light, which has always been the first step with the Narnia movies. Currently, we haven’t heard about a screenwriter been signed to take the book and turn it into a script. All three films have had the same screenwriters, save for Dawn Treader which added another writer to the mix. This is one of the first things that needs to happen before casting can begin.

2. The Green-Light

The production team will then take the material they’ve developed to the studio to present it before the studio heads. This can either be just a script, or a set including a script, storyboards and pre-vis demos of different sequences. They may also try to give an asking price for how much they think it would take to produce the film based on the script that was written. This is based on knowledge of how much various things tend to cost, among other things.

This could be expedited by the box office success that The Voyage of the Dawn Treader sees. If the film does really well, then Fox will see value in continuing the series.

3. Pre-Production goes full speed ahead

If the film is granted funding by the studio, the pre-production team is built up with more production staff and sets are built and everything necessary to get the film put together is acquired.

This leads us to the next phase, the one that you were looking for.

4. Casting

Once casting begins, they are going to look for the best actor to play each role. This is someone that fits the character that they are looking for. Usually they have the look of the character in mind when they start the casting process. They look at casting agencies mostly, but sometimes drama clubs and even open casting calls.

The best thing that you can do to increase your chances is to start acting in local plays. Many areas have drama clubs or local theater guilds that you can try out for roles with. Getting an agent is another good way to increase your chances of getting the role. There are a lot of phony agents in Hollywood, so you need to be very careful to go with a well known and well regarded agency.

When it comes to these films, they tend to look in the UK first, as they want to cast someone that has a natural British accent. There probably won’t be any open auditions for the role, as it is a leading role and they’ll need someone that can carry a film. They’ll look for someone charismatic that gets along well with Will Poulter.

5. Summing it all up

If you want to be Jill Pole, help make sure that the series continues by helping The Voyage of the Dawn Treader do well in theaters.  The filmmakers haven’t yet decided what they’ll do next if given the chance to do another Narnia, and word is they’re trying to decide between The Silver Chair and The Magician’s Nephew. (In multiple polls on many websites, approximately 75% of fans want to see The Silver Chair next.)

It is best if you are actually British, and part of an acting agency or group.

They aren’t currently casting the movie, as there is no movie to cast at the moment.  If or when the movie is officially announced by the studio, we will announce any casting calls and do whatever we can to give you as much information as possible to help you out.

If you find this later, should the film move forward and casting begins, and you have an audition, read this: Auditioning for Dummies.

  1. Well,I’m not surprised that thousands want to be Jill. Her character is really nice..Good luck to all who’ll be going for audition,BUT make VDT able to reach the greenlight for SC first..I do hope VDT will make it through..It was a movie worth the risk after PC and the series deserves to move on.
    Wake up people,Go watch VDT..

    Oh,1st comment..Yay..

  2. Thanks for writing this article. This will be a good resource to share with the people who email us every week asking to be Jill.

  3. Ever sents my mom read me the first Narnia book i’ve bin into Narnia and than i so wanted to be Jill my mom laughed at me and was like Ha when i told her she said one billion other girls want the part too…. i guess so… after all i live in Kenutky i’m into acting and theatre but it’s not that big a thing here. Oh well, may the best girl win! ^_^

    • i guess you could send in an audition tape once we get confirmation that casting will happen.

    • I’m really into the Narnia books and everything also! I really want to audition for Jill, but I don’t think they would really consider USA kids before the UK ones. I live in Montana, so I don’t know if I would really be actually called in for a table read or anything like that. But, I would want to play her in the Last Battle, because I practically idolize Will( Peter), Anna( Susan, Skandar( Edmund), and Georgie( Lucy) and Ben( Caspian). As well as Will( Eustace). Hopefully if I audition, they think my english accent is good enough..

  4. i wish i could get a chance 2 be in narnia…… cauz since ive read narnia i allways imagine 2 b a part of it

  5. oh yeah i am english and i really want to play Jill pole i am in the process of getting an agent but i am only 14 so i think i am a bit too young…does anyone knoe how old jill is meant to be??? ooh and if you look on the front cover of the last battle that is what i look like!!!! i love archery and horseriding 😀 so good luck to everyone xx

    • I’m 14 as well and personally I think that’s a great age for Jill. Eustace and Jill are supposed to be in the same grade so Will is around 15 so maybe you have a chance at it! You have a better chance than me or anyone else in the states. GOOD LUCK! 😀

      • Heya Archerygirlxx,
You arn’t too young to get an agent! I’m 15 and I just got an agent and there are pleanty of agencies in the Uk who are probably looking for new talent at around this time! I’m guessing that is the same in America or where ever you live so just keep looking and go for it 🙂
Also, Will Poulter is turning 18 soon but looks younger. He has grown in the last year quite a lot but I think if you can sort of match him appearence and like to act then you have about as good a chance as anyone else! I’d also love the role of Jill and recently wrote to the CD (Nina Gold) but she said she wasn’t casting at this time so I wouldn’t bother doing that yet.
This is my advice for everyone interested in the role, hope it helped!

        • yeah i know i’m not too young to get an agent i mean that because will poulter is eighteen maybe the age difference will be too large oh and btw what is nina gold’s email or how did you contact her???

        • can you please tell me nina gold’s address? i got an address off the internet, but im not sure if its the right one.

        • hey, CharlotteRosepoulter
You said you wrote to Nina Gold?
I did too, at the very beginning of January, but didn’t get a reply, do you have any idea why this is?
Which address did you write to?
I hope it’s not because she didn’t think I was suitable, or something along those lines! I’d be gutted!
          Thanks:)

  6. I would actually rather play one of the centaurs in The Silver Chair. There are the centaurs that carry the kids at the end, and Cloudbirth, even though it’s a boy. For Jill, I would prefer her to be a shorter person than Eustace as she is described small in Last Battle. I also imagine her with long brown hair. And of course, be British.

    • I am just the girl that you described! only i live in the Bahamas but I have a britsh accent! I have had much acting experience! I am hopeing to get to be jill in the silver chair or polly in the magician nephew!

  7. I want to be Jill….but I have no acting experience whatsoever 😛 ….nor do I have a British accent. 🙁 (Wishes she lived in England. -.- )

  8. I want to be Jill but I’m American and I can kind of do a british accent, but I would rather be Polly!!

  9. Thanks for putting up with all of those Jill wana-be’s! I would love to play just a part in a Narnia film. An extra would be AMAZING enough! 🙂

  10. I’m surprised more girls want to be Jill than Lucy. very good article, thanks.

  11. Jill Pole was made for me and im not just saying this i am 12 i went to a mmixed school i was bullied im adventurous not afraid of height and i just want to be an actress soo much but if i got to be one hats based on my fav book that would just be the icing on the cake also i always pictured jill as a plain jane and i am very plain except when it comes to acting also i know ther will be auditions at the metropolitan theatre but i dont know which one!

  12. I wish I could be a part of Narnia.
I think I would never get the main part, but just to have one line on the movie would be incredible

  13. I would love so much to be Jill! Thanks for putting up this article it really helped 🙂
I’m 14, and absolutely LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia!
I do have some acting experience, but nothing on screen, although I have done my research so i know for sure i could handle it! I also love horse riding!
I’m English too, have mid-length brown hair, blue eyes and 5 foot 6.
So many people want to be Jill though:( Wish me luck!:)

  14. Question about the books…

I haven’t read the Narnia series and my box set just came in 🙂 I have heard the two prevailing schools of though with regards to the order in which the books should be read.

    1. Chronological order meaning The Magician’s Nephew first
    2. Published order meaning The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe first

I don’t know which order to choose. The only other comparison I can think of is the Star Wars movies. Episodes IV-VI were released before Episodes I-III. If I met someone who hasn’t seen any of the Star War movies I would probably recommend watching Episodes IV-VI before I-III. However, the argument for watching I-III before IV-VI also exists.

I know this is probably more suited for the forum on this website. However the comments section appears much more active than the forum and I think I will get more responses this way 🙂

    • Read them first in the original publication order. This was the order that the world discovered them in, and you can enjoy it that way, too. Then, if you want, go back and read them in any order that you want to. Some think it’s hard to read them out of chronological order, but they are selling themselves short. It’s not hard to tell yourself when the story is taking place. There are only seven books, afterall.

        • Only start with Magician’s Nephew the second time that you read it. The first time through, don’t start there. Leave it to 6th, in the original publication order.

For one thing, it sucks all of the magic and mystery out of some of the aspects of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe if you already know some things ahead of time.

Secondly, I know too many people that tried to get through that one first, and they just couldn’t do it. (The magic simply wasn’t there for them, when reading something that sets up the logic of the world of Narnia.) Seriously, in Magician’s Nephew, you learn about things that you don’t know you should care about, unless you’ve read the other books first.

          • That makes a lot of sense! I wish I would’ve read LWW first! I do remember kinda of getting board during MN, but sense I loved the series so much I kept reading…

          • I actually read Magican’s Nephew first and loved it. I even think it’s my favourite book.
I understood everything and found it the funniest of the seven books. I liked LWW even better then because of the knowledge from MN (e.g. without it you could ask yourself where the lantern comes from) and could remember certain scenes from MN when reading LWW.

But I guess everyone should decide himself/herself what book to read first.

    • I definitely agree with Paul on this. Read them in Publication order, not chronological, at least the first time. I had very old copies of the books and they were ordered that way. I’m so glad they were. The chronological way just doesn’t flow the same way. I like to say, “Oh, so that’s how that happened!” or “So that’s where that came from!” In addition, the writing style grows and progresses a bit, particularly at first, so that if you read it chronologically, it’s like jumping back and forth from a youthful fairy-tale to a more maturely written short novel.

  15. I would like to be Aravis, but I think I’m a bit old for the part. Plus I have very little acting experience. Anyways there is not much of a spot for a young adult in Narnia.

  16. I would love the part, but sadly I am not form The U.K or in a acting group. I can act though, and I can do a good British accent(It’s based on Georgie’s accent).

  17. Ohhhh… if only I lived in the U.K. At least I have an aquired British accent.Oh well.ANY part in any Narnia movie would be wonderful. If I could…

  18. I am Australian and nineteen years old…jill or any other narnian character would be a nice experience to play…but lol i am very bad at acting…in school dramas i would stuff it really badly..and i have no british accent …i just found out recently my family has British in them..shame we lost the acent…i was wondering is there a way to learn the british accent…i love it…but i doubt i will get the part..i wish everyone the best 😉

    • Practice is the only answer I have for you. Trust me my Yoda accent was horrible in the beginning until I imitated him so frequently it got better. Pick a british accent speaking character like Lucy or Susan Pevensie or Hermione Granger. Then just try to imitate them as frequently as possible with your favorite quotes.

        • Thanxs Angelica and Paul…I will definitely pick one of the narnia characters or Hermione to learn the British accent…CNT WAIT!!!!…lol Yoda…Donald Duck and Kermit the Frog..funny characters to impersonate HAHA….they are great characters so I understand completely…I am glad yous end up getting the voice..thanxs once again guys!!!

  19. hiyah, my name is rachael, i live in england, and when i leave my secondary school, i will be in my performing arts and dance acadiamy class, i hope that this will boost my confidence in performing infront of people :). i am a very bubliey person, i talk alot sometimes 🙂 i am very shy and sentatice as well when am around peopel who i dont know. 😀 but i hope that the film does well anyways. but it would be an amazing adventure if i could be apart of it. good luck to everybody 😀 😀 x

      • an am 16 years old, i have a twin brother, and another brother and an older sister, soo the characters in narnia kinda rimind me of me and my siblings 😛 in a very strange way hehe lol xx

  20. The girl who will get the role is very lucky…
I am german, so I don’t think that I have a chance to get the role…
    but maybe I’ll try…

  21. oooh. I want to play Jill so much. I live in America and I’m 14. I can do a really good British accent. But what sucks is that I’m only 4 foot 10.5 inches tall! I am small!! But I really want to be Jill.

  22. What if we want to audition for Puddleglum? I would think he wouldn’t need a British accent! And would the person need to be tall or would he have something to make his arms and legs longer? Mine are already long, with a short torso, but I am only 5’8″.

  23. It would be fun to be Jill. And I think that I could do it. But, I don’t think I will be able to! I can’t afford all of that it would take to just get to the auditioning!!!
Besides, will they even look at anyone from America? Even if I can do a great English accent. 😉
Well, I hope that whoever gets to be Jill does a wonderful job and cares more about being what Lewis would want and not getting the fame! (Which will come 🙂 )
    Good post, Paul.

  24. I really want to be Jill in the silver chair but i dont know how old you have to be. Im fourteen going on 15 and i would really love to be able to make my break in the acting world but i dont know where to go for auditions. I am really great full for you too post this, i just hope i am not too old !! good luck to everyone !! 😀 xxx

  25. i reallyyyy want to b jill, but i live in australia and probably culdnt afford to get to any auditions in the UK. i had the idea to send in a video audition when they start casting, wuld anybody kno where i wuld possibly send it too?

  26. what about the lady of green kirtle/queen of the underworld? any idea of what they might be looking for in her?

  27. Thank you for all this information! (:
Ah.. playing Jill Pole would be incredible. The Silver Chair is one of my favorite books, and Jill is my favorite character. Unfortunately I’m twelve and I live in the US, but I can do an exceptional job at making myself sound British, I’ve been in a few plays, and I’m starting acting class soon…..and if I’m lucky I may get an agent.
Hopefully all the girls who hope to play Jill will get a chance to audition! <3 I can't wait to see what happens.

  28. Firstly i want to notice that all chronicles of narnia books are amazing, so much teaching, so much truth and so much adventure. As we saw the first movie, Chronicles of Narnia: Lion, Witch and Wardrobe, it was amazing, outstanding, the special effects, cast, and aslan. The movie was almost accurate. Prince Caspian was a good movie, but there was more things missing, and Voyage of the Drawn Treader was amazing BUT it was less accurate to the books. Ok first im not saying they didn’t do a good job, because they actually did, a movie without sponsors like Disney which abandon them, they did an awesome job, but the last movie was less accurate to the book and i was dissapointed because that book is one of my favorite. The Silver Chair is also amazing, as you read it you can imagine it in front of you, and that the deal with the movies, they try to bring it into the motion picture world the wise words of C.S Lewis. And YES, ABSOLUTELY they SHOULD do the movie of the Silver Chair, i dont care if its on 2012 or 2013 but they need to do it, because once you read you will understand why, i just cant explained it. And they also need to do the LAST BATTLE because its like the Armaggedeon war in Narnia, and who doesn’t want Aslan to be fighting…come on! So i really hope and pray, that the guys go write the script, the producers and director (which they did an awesome job, and i KNOW and Believe they can do it even better) can at least a day or two or a week, buy they Chick Fil’A sandwich or whatever, and sit down in the couch and read carefully the Silver Chair, and then The LAST BATTLE, take notes, have the PICTURE and write it down, either in their napkins (just like Taylor Swift writes her songs in it) and let themselves be drawn into Narnia, feel the battle, the tasks the Aslan gives the guys and the battles they develop and most important, the message (not to mention the entire NARNIA background, mountains, animals, creature…you name it). And i know, they will come up with ideas that will make the last two movies so awesome and so accurate that people will want to see it the next day or the next show of the same day.
I KNOW that is possible, i really love movies, and believe me i have taken notes about what it could be done, even the soundtrack! hahaha but i just encourage those people who have resources to make it possible, to be proud at the end of their effort because at the end, not just us will be thankful of their hard work but also C.S.Lewis.

  29. I want to be Jill for many different reasons. Reason #1 is because when I get the part, I’ll be the role for the rest of the series. Reason #2 is because I’ll meet Skandar Keynes, the hottest man on the planet. Reason #3 is because C.S. Lewis is my distant cousin, & reasonn #4 is because of the money. My mom & I are inn a housing situation that we aren’ t supposed to be in & I figured that being in a movie that’ll do well would be the easiest way to earn money.
I’m 50% British & will be starting lessons with an accent coach. Also, my mom is doing her bbest to find a talemt agent. When I lived in California, I had one. You cannot even imagine how much I want tthis role.

  30. I would LOVVEEE to be jill, I don’t have a british accent but i can do a super good one. Im kinda tall for my age in 5’9 and im 13 :/ I don’t know if thats the right age.:( It probably isn’t. I have some acting experence i have done lots of plays and i gone to acting camp. I was also wondering were the adoutions will be held??
And all the best to the other beautiful gurrls trying out for this role 🙂

  31. eeeeeeekkkkkk! i wanna be Jill soooo bad that i have butterflies just thinking about it 😀

    • Me too 🙂
And if that role is taken I would faint and be miserable forever 🙁
I was close to getting really worried the role was taken.

      • Me to! I I would even have a slite chance of being Jill but I live in the Bahamas! Ug look at the 4 other replys I made and you will see why I would be sush a good Jill!

        • I’m glad I live near New York City, because there might be a small chance the audition will be held there, because it’s world famous.

  32. Hello everyone 🙂
My biggest dream I’ve had is to take the roll of Jill pole. It has lasted very long and very strong.
If anyone has any advice or knows who I should contact.
Please tell me!!!!! Thank you 🙂

  33. i’m 16 and would love to play the role of jill. only problem is, i have no acting experience & no agent. i feel i have a lot of personality traits that are the same as the way jill is described & i have always wanted to get into acting, i’ve just never had an opportunity. i’m english with an english accent & live in england which should help, i just need some help getting started! ideas anyone? does anybody have any tips on getting started & getting an audition for jill? any help is majorly appreciated!!

  34. The other day someone in my art class said I looked like someone from Narnia lol! I’ve always loved Jill Pole ever since I read the Silver Chair, and I’ve dreamed of being Jill Pole for about a year now. I don’t know if I’m old enough (14 in March) though, but I look a bit older than I am, even though I’m a bit below average height. I live in Northern Ireland, but I was born in England, my mum has an English accent and I can manage one easily enough. I don’t have any professional acting experience and I don’t belong to an agency or anything like that, but I’ve done a lot of drama summer schemes and plays like Helena in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Stefano in “The Tempest”, Splenda in “Holka Polka” etc. Anyway, I really hope I get a chance to at least audition 😀

  35. im 12 ever since the chronicles of nanria the lion the witch and the wardrobe came out i have always wanted to be apart of nanria since georgie henley is my hero.I would really give anything to have this part i am british and live in middlesborogh in england im determined to dowhat ever it takes to get an audition for this film so i have my fingers crossed xxxxxxxxxx

  36. heyy everyonee, someone on narniaweb commented that SC has been greenlit! has anyone here heard the same thing?? 🙂

  37. Hey. I would love to addition for Jill Pole. The Silver Chair is my favorite book! I love it!

  38. Hi again. I have a question? how do you get to try out for this? I love acting. have have do it a few times, just not on camera. I would really love this. Ever since i saw the first movie I wished I could try to be in one of these movies. I know alot of girls want to be Jill Pole. But as long as i can try it out, i will be glad.I might not know much, but I can learn quick.

  39. Hi again,

Sorry, just one more thing. I am 15. I live in the USA and I am trying find a career. I am thinking about being an actress, fashion designer or author. My heart is in this and i don’t mean to be a brat or pushy. i am just trying to give as much information as possible. Thats all, bye!

  40. My biggest dreams have always been something along the lines of actress, author, etc. I have NO acting experience WHATSOEVER but even in all its impossibility I would absolutely LOVE to try out for Jill Pole. I’m fourteen. I don’t know if that’s to old or young, but there seems to be a lot of fourteen year olds who want to be her so… I have brown hair and brown eyes, and I’ve been told that I look like Georgie Henley. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe not. 🙂 I have just sort of grown with the movies, and whether I get to try out or not, I REALLY hope that they do the Silver Chair and that it’s a huge success.

  41. I think you girls are awsome, i hope that you will be able to try out for Jill. Everyone loves that girl. I think the reason I like her is becuase I can relate to her, but I just can’t see myself in a movie, even thought it is a dream I have had for so long.

I really the Narnia books and movies becuase they actually match, I mean they both keep a message inside them. Like being yourself, that everyone has a purpose; thats what I got out of Lucy’s vision. And it is just so cool, it is like you can see into C.S. Lewis’s books just by watching the shows, I hope the Silver Chair is like that too.

Elise, my sister tells me that too! Isn’t that kinda weird? I think that Goergie is really pretty! Can you belive that she grew up so fast, she is so cool. I always wanted to meet her!

I don’t think the age really counts, becuase Ben Barnes is in his 20’s and Prince Caspin was actually around fourteen!
    So don’t worry!

I hope that if i don’t ever get to try out her Jill Pole, that one of you will be able to!

My family is going to be moving somtime around the end of Febuary! So you all have a better chance than me! My parents don’t even know that I want to try out, but I am going to talk to them of course.

    You all are so lucky!

    • Carolyn, maybe it’s a sibling thing, because my older brother told me that I look like Georgie Henley. 🙂 It was sweet of him. And I totally understand about moving, my family is moving in like two weeks.

  42. Hey again,

Did i mention , i am half British?

Oh , Hey Lizzie. i would be glad to help! I don’t know much about acting but hopefully i have somthing that can help you!( Since i am moving, i don’t have much of a chance anyways).
Have you tried finding parts in the Silver Chair that have emotion or action? You know some quotes that Jill says, you could pratice those!

Also have you tried looking up movie additions online?
or maybe trying to find a acting school?
The acting school could help you. Or maybe you could find somthing online!
I hope this is some how useful!

Hey just why do you girls want to be Jill? There are other girls that are important in the Narnia movies?
I think jill is awsome, but i think the best person to play jill is someone who can get along with Will and doesn’t care for fame but for fun!
‘ello! Has anyone noticed what Those fame lovers turn out like? You don’t want to know! Some even comit suicide!

Mira , don’t feel bad about tpying. ( I am bad with it to, I can’t remmeber how to spell the mouse reepacheep!)You have a better chance then the rest of us!

Trust me about acting, it can be hard. I once was the lead charater for a play, for the first time, ( Red Riding Hood) and I only had three days to memerize my lines! I didn’t have them all down but thank goodness I did have some time back stage, And the bad part is that i had to do it twice. ( It wasn’t a two-minute play either!) And did I mention it was a musical! Man it was hot on stage!

I hope they look in America ! It would be very fair for just some to have a chance! We are fans too!
I would be so glad if they did!
My sister is really sweet, she thinks I could be Jill. But of course it is expensive. She is the best sister in the world! I hope in some ways that she could addition, but she doesn’t want to. She is so cute. She is 12, and looks like an Native American, almost.

I agree that Skandar is cute, but I think I have another boys attention. Don’t you girls think it is wierd when a boy keeps looking at your direction? I think Ben Barnes is cuter.
I liked the way his hair was in Prince Caspin, he looked younger! But I think Will is cute too! But everyone thinks boys on TV are cute.

Hey, I am half German too!
To some it up, I am half British, half German, half French, and half Welsh! My Goodness! But I only have a Welsh/ British accent and know Japanese!( But very little at that!)

Does any one know how tall Will(Eustace) is ?
Hey Martin, do you know one of the directors?
Do you think you might be albe to pull a few strings and see if the director can read these comments, it might be helpful? Just wondering.

I guess thats all, please help. ANYBODY!!!!!!

  43. Polly might be someone i could look forward to trying out for additions!!!
