Carey Mulligan Begins Filming as Digory’s Mother in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew

Mabel Kirke

Production is underway on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, and our sources tell us that Carey Mulligan has officially begun filming her role as Digory’s mother Mabel Kirke. The BAFTA winner and three-time Oscar nominee steps into one of the most moving storylines in all of Narnia.

In an interview promoting her latest film The Ballad of Wallace Island, Mulligan spoke with gratitude about her chance to join Gerwig’s vision for Narnia:

“I honestly just can’t believe I got to be in either of them. I’ve wanted to work with Greta forever and to get to be a part of that in any way is, you know, kind of a pinch-me moment. So, yeah, I’m just feeling incredibly lucky to get to do both.” (via Sunrise)

A Tender Role at the Heart of Narnia’s Origin

Those familiar with the book will know just how significant Digory’s mother is to the story. Having Carey Mulligan bring her warmth and sincerity to this role promises to deepen that emotional resonance on screen.

Her reflections on recent projects hint at the kind of spirit she carries into the work. Speaking about another film set, she described it this way:

“It was amazing… It felt like we were all just there together having the sweetest time. It didn’t feel like work at all. … For me, it was just a complete delight … and I was allowed to laugh. I was the only one who was allowed to laugh, basically, and sing.” (via Flip Your Wig)

That kind of authenticity and joy feels well-suited to embodying a character who is a beacon of love and inspiration to her son.

A New Chapter in Narnia Filming

With Greta Gerwig directing and Carey Mulligan already filming, The Magician’s Nephew is taking shape before our eyes. Mulligan’s comments remind us that this production is not just another adaptation, but a chance to revisit Narnia’s beginnings with fresh eyes and deep emotion.

Aslan’s song is waiting, the wardrobe is open, and one of Britain’s finest actresses has now stepped into the story.

By the way… we just wanted to take the time to remind you: the casting of Aslan is not yet finalized. We’ll be sure to let you know when we know and can announce it. And, while Narnia is currently filming around the UK, unless they are filming everything on location, we’ll soon be seeing the last of the public filming reports, as they may be moving into studio space, out of sight of the public for the remainder of the production.
