Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire References Narnia

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

If you’ve followed NarniaFans for any length of time, you know we love spotting Narnia references in unexpected places — and one of the latest comes from a rather surprising source: the Ghostbusters universe! It’s one of my all-time favorite franchises, and if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought they wrote that line of dialogue just for me.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the newest film in the franchise, a terrifying entity named Garraka threatens to freeze the world. During the climactic battle, one of the new characters, Nadeem, stands up to Garraka, and as he’s talking to Garraka, he delivers a line that caught me completely off-guard:

Nadeem: “I go back to Queens, you go back to Narnia.”

Hearing Narnia mentioned on the big screen in a major blockbuster is always a thrill — especially in a moment like that! It’s a small nod, but it reminds us just how deeply Narnia lives on in popular culture.

When Garraka attacks New York City, bringing winter with him, it is the middle of summer. If he succeeds, it would be a very White Witch situation where it’s always winter but never Christmas.

And if that wasn’t enough for fans of classic fantasy, Frozen Empire even slips in a reference to Tolkien, making this movie a fun crossover moment for lovers of both Middle-earth and Narnia.

Early in the movie, the Mayor confronts the Ghostbusters about the damage they had just done to the city, and one of the Ghostbusters responds:

Gary Grooberson: “Yeah, but you can’t have a Sewer Dragon flying around Soho like it’s Middle-earth.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the fourth film in the series (fifth overall). It was written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan.
