A good many college students have read and become hooked on Christianity through Narnia’s creator, C.S. Lewis, according to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

When C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien first met on May 11, 1926 at Oxford University, where Tolkien was a professor of English language and Lewis a professor of English literature, they initially didn’t hit it off. Tolkien didn’t think English literature held much academic validity. Lewis’ Protestant upbringing had taught him never to trust a “Papist”; Tolkien was Catholic.

In a couple of weeks, the world will be captivated by the blockbuster film release, “Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” – and will be logically curious about who wrote it, what inspired him, and what he was really like.

With the film release a week away, a Hope College professor wants to help moviegoers understand the symbolism in C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

Author CS Lewis may have ended up writing the evergreen Narnia series of books at Oxford, he was born and bred in Belfast, and the city is set to celebrate its most famous novelist with a 10-day festival.

Normally, we don’t get too much into “talking up” programs or films, but this is one we heartily recommend. To say that we were pleasantly surprised when we screened an advance copy of this program would be a vast understatement.

A newly-revealed letter by author CS Lewis has shown he opposed the idea of a screen version of his Narnia books, now adapted for a major film.
Lewis said TV versions of the animals in his books would result in either “buffoonery or nightmare” and criticised Walt Disney for “vulgarity”.
