It wasn't so much that Tennant didn't want to do other things.. it's that he didn't want to leave like Tom Baker did. For those who don't know, Baker was basically fired. The series was going nowhere, and the BBC wanted to refresh it. Baker , at the time, had quite an attitude with regards to the show.. so they basically killed him off in favor of Tom Davison.

The reason Tennant wanted to leave now was , in his words "Because I could see myself doing this forever. I don't want to hate this years down the road." He , in short, didn't want to become another Tom Baker.
I think it's too late for that... unless he can come up with another great performance somewhere, I will always see Tennat as the doctor.

I... so they basically killed him off in favor of Tom Davison.

Um, do you mean Peter Davison? :D Poor Fivey, can't get no respect.

But yeah, Tom did kind of burn out on it after a while - and Peter did a lovely job, I think. Patrick Troughton (Two) left after three years for that very reason, that he was afraid of being typecast - though in the long run, he grew to love his 'ongoing' Doctor-role as one of the most enjoyable points in his career.

Hee.. Yes, I meant Peter :p

Whoops :)

All the same, that's why Tennant said he was going to leave. He didn't want to hate Doctor Who.

...Well,except maybe Collin Baker or the 8th doctor guy.

I tend to see both of these 'underdogs' as victims of the scriptwriters, etc. more than anything else - in truth, Colin Baker was given a raw deal... he wanted a dark blue costume and they dressed him like a clown, then they cut the length of his story arcs and left him with Peri of all people for a companion...ack.... The audio stories that both he and McGann (Eight) have done work wonders at redeeming them and give them both a more proper chance to shine.

That said, I don't care for the filmed works by either because of the plots, etc. they had to work with. One of the only Six episodes I own is The Two Doctors because it has Two and Jamie in it, not because of Six.

There's a rather fun old 60's style recording that Fraser Hines (Jamie) sung to that title - Who is Doctor Who...ha....! He actually has a very nice voice.

And yes, how does one sum up the Doctor after all these years? :p Babelcolour has a great introductory video on youtube too.
