Yes, it's sad. Especially the part when he almost repented when he saw Frodo sleeping but Sam snapped at him and ruined it.:(

Gollum had the opportunity for redemption, however circumstances hinder it. However if you think about it, it was nessary Gollum remain wicked of heart, if he had not still loved the One Ring, it would have in turn never been destroyed. It's interesting how God uses evil to bring forth good.

A good example is Jesus himself. His disciple Judas as everyone knows betrayed him, however if he had not the prophecy would had not be fulfilled and in the end because of Judas' choice Christ was able to make the ultimate sacrfice for the sins of all mankind. So thought Judas commited an evil.. it brought forth greater good.

Just an interesting thought. ;)

Sam-- of all the characters, Sam best represents the most ordinary person trying to do his or her best in life, and the epic seems to teach that such a person accomplishes far more than they may ever realize, and it also shows the absolute joy at the end of a life well-lived, always true to good principles.

Without Sam, Frodo would never have finished the quest.

Well said! And Sam didn't wish much. All he wanted was to be a good gardener :D

Sam is an exellent choice. He's brave, loyal, humble and self sacrificing. Alas as much as I love Sam, he isn't my favorite. Nay my favorite is Aragorn, athough at times it seems more like It's Arwen. The truth is I have trouble deciding between the two. :D XD

I voted for Legolas, although I love Aragorn and Sam and Gimli and Merry and Pippin also. Legolas is uber cool. I also like Elrond now that I've seen him in the films, and Galadriel.

Aragorn is my top favorite, especially as Strider; but I've got a lot of second favorites--Eomer, Faramir, and Merry all number among my much-liked characters. Never cared for Boromir, though, even at the beginning.

Why is he an idiot? He is a mighty man of valor, and all he wants to do is protect Gondor. Because his passions get the better of him, and the ring exerts its evil on him, doesn't make him evil (or idiotic). He dies trying to save the little ones ... I think he is more than redeemed.

My favorite is Sam. He's so lovable and huggable. :D But my second favorite is Eomer...for obvious reasons. ;) hehe. And I love Gimli; he has some of the best lines in the extended editions.

he just really really annoys me especially in the films. He just says stupid things and is like haha Frodo give me the ring and stuff evil or not hes still an idiot in my opinion.

Gandalf hints at one point in the books, when he learns of Boromir's death, that it wasn't in vain that Merry and Pippin had joined the fellowship as they had helped Boromir redeem himself. Think of it... child born of noble lineage, sent on a journey which tested his ability to discern and choose between right and wrong, chooses wrong, realizes his mistake, repents, dies fighting for what is right. Sounds a lot like what I'm trying to do with my life... I'm afraid I identify with Boromir in many ways and what really inspires me the most is his full, complete repentance, his last fight, with no fear, no hesitation, his total devotion to what he now knows is right, and willingness to die for it. That, for me, is truly heroic.

but in my opinion he is not redeemed at ALL as he attempted to take the ring when it was not his to take & he just pointed out the obvious all the time
*troll noise*
"They have a cave troll"
Its like well no way!

That cave troll line is funny to me. :)

But of course Boromir is redeemed by giving his life to save the Hobbits and pledging his devotion to Aragorn. Maybe you just don't like that actor in the films ...

I dont mind sean I like him as an actor
Boromir just annoys me. Nothing he could do could change my mind XD
Its just one of those things its like when someone sends off a bad vibe and for no reason you dislike them?
