Homeschoolers in Highschool, Part Three

"I told you I was with you on this, Chil-Chil, and I am. You're not hurting Mom and Dad by this, they respect your right to know. But--" (and he looked Mom in the eye) "--I'll say what they're not saying: you may hurt _yourself_ in this process. If Dan had misgivings about your search, I'd bet my earnings for a week that he also is thinking of the same thing. You might not like what you find out. But I'm the one who says he'd always rather know than not know, so I can't criticize."

After Alipang and Chilena left Summer went up to her room and flopped on her bed. She was smiling. Her father had really seemed to like Alipang. Her mother knocked on the door frame. "Honey?" Summer sat up. "Hi mom." She stood up and hugged her mother. Her mother looked tired. "Your friend Alipang seems like a wonderful guy." Her mother said. "Your father seemed to really enjoy listening and talking to him." Summer nodded. "Another friend of mine, Grant, might come over sometime too. He sings. Alipang thought it might help daddy." Summer leaned on her mother enjoying just being together. After her mother left Summer went to bed. She was tired.

" Why I'm confuse I didn't tell you anything about Dan," she asked, pulling away from him " What are you talking about Al?," she asked, getting up.

"I said, and I quote myself, IF Dan had misgivings. I don't _know_ anything, in fact you might remember my guessing that things were cool between you and him. But _because_ Dan cares about you, I thought it likely that he would have doubts about your searching, for the same reason as my doubts."

Alipang's arms found their familiar position around her waist. "Dan may not want you to see his mixed feelings about the whole business. I don't think he's one to feel petty jealousy of your interest in your birth family; but he might be afraid that you would _think_ he was jealous." He drew Chilena closer to himself, as he always did in these tender moments.

This affectionate routine between them, shared countless times, was a comfort to Alipang amid his many stresses; he never tired of it. Kissing her hair as he often did, he told her, "I've said what I believe to be true of Dan. I think he wishes only what's best for you, as does everyone in this room."

Grant was excited about the oppurtunity, to go and play music for some one, and that oppurtunity was made possible by his friend Alipang who called earlier, and told Grant that he should come over to Summer's place and play some songs for her disabled father. Grant got out his phone, and dialedSummer's number.....it rang.

Meanwhile, Eric and Cecilia Havens left Alipang and Chilena alone. Alipang held Chilena close, lovingly cradling and rocking her in his embrace, for as long as she felt like being held.

PLAYERS HAVING GONE TO BED--

--let us turn the clock ahead to Saturday morning; but loose ends from Friday night can still be tied up, e.g. if Grant and Summer need to have more dialogue.

================================

That night, Alipang dreamed vividly again. The dream started innocently enough, with a realistic replay of himself affectionately holding Chilena on his lap. Suddenly, however, it was a wheelchair on which he was sitting; and instead of his sister, it was Summer who was perched on his knees and clinging to him. She kissed him with a furious heat, and then--well, that was when the dream turned vivid.

He awoke panting, staring, bewildered. Was this--lust? Facepalming himself, he growled, "She's your _friend,_ Alipang, your friend! Brain, behave yourself!"

He spent some fifteen minutes in prayer before going back to sleep. At the end of it, he felt more confident of being able to go on being _friends_ with Summer. Anyway, having himself benefitted in his life by unearned kindness from others, he didn't want to be mercenary when "paying forward" his own acts of kindness. There was no price tag on the kindness he had shown to Kim; and there WOULD BE no price tag on the kindness he was showing to Summer by trying to help her Dad.

ooc: since we've moved on to saturday of labor day weekend, when will the festivities be?

ic: Jen, having an awesome time at Brendan's house the evening before, woke up in high spirits.

OOC: The main event is not until the actual Labor Day, Monday, at the lakefront. But Redemption Free Church is having a lunch at Pansit Paradise on Saturday for young people who are volunteering to help with children's events at that main festival. Confessor's characters, the Katon siblings, have been recruited by Pastor Stetzer.

==================

On Saturday morning, Dan received a phone call--not from Chilena, but from the early-rising Alipang.

"Dan, I hope you're feeling better. As I expect you know, Chilena's mind is full of her birth parents now. It may be possible get help contacting them through relatives in Richmond; they themselves moved to _Morocco_ long ago! Anyway, I want you to know that I _don't_ hold it against you that you're not more enthusiastic for this search; I think both of us are worried about Chil-Chil getting her feelings hurt."

ooc: oh okay.

ic: "I am," Dan said with a yawn. "And yes, I'm worried about her... I'm not sure what I should do."

"Well, Dan, if you're well enough by now, or _when_ you are, maybe you and I can do something or other together, so Chil-Chil is reminded that _I'm_ still cool with you. And we can brainstorm on helping her."

Dan sniffed and checked his thermometer. "I think I'm getting better. I don't have that big of a fever. I'm sure by Labor Day I'll be good."
