I think you're putting the plot together in the most terrific way! Including the other updates on your blog, I most thoroughly enjoyed the slow approach to the attraction between them. It was present, but the inclusion of "I think you’re the nicest, most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen" really nailed the last nail in for the romance.
She's only what... 12? 13? Yet many adults believe that's really too young for any romance to spark, that it's really only "puppy-love" and not much else... Then these "distinguished" adults turn around and praise stories like "Romeo and Juliet" to be about "true, deep love," though Juliet, in the actual play, is "not yet 14." Juliet falls in love, marries, sleeps with the guy, has life/death traumas about love, and then commits suicide over Romeo. This all occurs in a matter of months, the whole time being only 13 years old. So... dump the adults' opinions about what constitutes "love" and what doesn't... I don't at all mind you having anything romantic going on between Joe and Kandie when they're this young.
Sorry, I went on a bit of a tirade, there. I know the complement given to Kandie wasn't unquestionably romantic... But we've seriously gotta think about the upcoming "marriage proposal" you've got in store, while she's still this age. The complement scene you wrote was a fantastic introduction to this upcoming event, though we, your audience, are not supposed to know about it yet... Buuut, since I do understand where this is going, I recognize this scene for the beautiful future which will ensue. That's what I thought the whole scene was basically about: increasing the attraction between Joe and Kandie. It worked, and I look forward to more, most importantly. Bravo.
