Alipang answered, wondering whether Summer already knew about Chilena's blabbing. Probably she did; probably everyone did by now. That would be just my luck: now I can't even rebound to Summer, because if I tried to be her boyfriend now, she'd know she was my second choice after Kim....

"Rafferty's Truck Stop, Alipang Havens speaking."
 
Summer laughed. "Hey Al. Just wanted to make sure everything was ok. I saw your conversation with Kim and it didn't look good to me. You ok? What happened?"
 
Alipang said softly in Tagalog to his sister, "It's already beginning," and put his free arm around her to hold her as closely as one arm from the side could do. In English, then:

"Yes, hello, Summer. Chilena and I are having a furious argument over which of us loves the other one more. Since brothers and sisters can't get married, she and I have to find other ways to make our case. I love Chilena enough to stress my fractured rib taking down a punk who hit her; and she loves me enough to embarrass herself in a desperate attempt to save me from a broken heart. I'm not sure I should say more now, except to emphasize that every uncomfortable thing to have happened to my sister or me today had some connection with our love for each other, or was responded to with actions of love for each other."

That earned Alipang a silent but heartfelt kiss on the cheek from Chilena, which he returned twice while Summer spoke next.

"I'm just glad everything is ok." Summer said. "And be careful with that rib. And tell Chilena I said hi."
 
"It was Summer, all right," Alipang affirmed; "and she was NOT nosy about what happened. She says hi to you." He stroked Chilena's back up and down, shoulder to waist.
 
Alipang did so. Then, when Summer had hung up, the siblings finished their ice cream.

* * That's right. After having his feelings for Kim Tisdale blabbed about in a public place BY Chilena, Alipang is so mortified that he can't bear to be anywhere near Kim right now. Yet he quickly forgave his big-mouthed sister, because he loves her very very very much. As an alternative to going back to Lakeshore Park, Chilena said they could go for ice cream; but the festival has caused many businesses to be closed in their home locations so they can run concessions as the park. Rafferty's Truck Stop, a little way outside the Smoky Lake city limits, was the first place they found open that would serve them ice cream.

Alipang noticed how quickly Chilena turned cheerful again. His forgiveness to her had been SO successful, that she seemed already to have forgotten that she HAD done him any harm. And with Dan back in contact with her, he simply wiped her ice-cream attack off his nose with a napkin, and neither said anything about it nor did anything playful in return. He knew that his relationship with her would continue--but between her emotional changes and his own, it would continue to be a rollercoaster. A part-time rollercoaster. He had resolved before this that he would never let his brotherly closeness to Chilena seem to be COMPETING with her boyfriend. I catch the creep who hit her, but Dan is her hero, so saith her texting. Serves me right for looking over her shoulder.

Happily texting, she seemed not to notice when Alipang withdrew his arm from around her and stood to pay for the ice cream.

Dan got into his father's old car, since his parents didn't get him a new car, and drove out of his driveway. He knew the way to the truck stop pretty easily; his father used to take trips there with him when he was younger. He got to the stop soon and stepped out, closing the car door behind him. He entered the ice cream place and looked around for Chilena.
 
Alipang, closer to the truckstop entrance, saw Dan first. "Hi, Dan! What, you got your license?"


(To allow for Dan getting there, we can assume that both siblings went to the restrooms meanwhile.)
 
She kissed Al's cheek " Thanks for being my hero for the day," she told him, then waved to Dan " Dan you back!," she told him.
