I guess my main beef is that Abrams wasn't even a Trek fan. He is a Star Wars fan. No SW fan, I repeat, NO SW fan should be allowed to make a Star Trek film. He tried to incorporate way too many elements and themes from Star Wars into it. The main reason I even saw Trek in theaters was because of Karl Urban and because I had never seen a Trek film in theaters. And the only reason I even watch the movie is for Karl Urban because he's the absolutely perfect Bones.

He really was a terrific Bones! I thought all the young actors did very well with their iconic roles; Scotty was the only one that disappointed me a bit; you get the idea from ToS that he has always been a studious engineering type, and they sort of blew that image a bit. Still, I don't think you want to limit the directors based on their own personal fandom; I think a Tolkien fan who had never read CON might be able to direct a CON film very ably because of the similarity of the authors, you know?

I liked the new film, and I thought it opened up a whole new world for The Orginal Series characters, with their new timeline, and that can't be a bad thing (to my mind).

If a Tolkien fan could direct Narnia in a way that was true to the spirit of Lewis and the books, I have no problem with it. however, I felt, along with a majority of other Trekkies, that Abrams said, "well I can do whatever I want with this". The Romulans weren't even factual in terms of physical features; in Next Generation and beyond (and presumably, around the time period that those Romulans were from), they had the really weird foreheads, not the smooth foreheads that the TOS and these Romulans possessed. Aside from the minute details like that, I felt too much was borrowed from SW.

And on the actors: well, aside from Uhura and Bones, I felt as if every actor was trying to imitate their predecessor(s), not become that character. Scotty's character irked me because apparently in TOS he had a hair transplant (did you notice how much hair the original and better Scotty had in the original series and films?) Oh, and don't even get me started on Kirk and Spock in this movie. Puhlease. I never once accepted them as Kirk and Spock. I never accepted Chekov and Sulu as Chekov and Sulu either. Yeah, I have a lot of issues with the movie.

You mean Shatner? He didn't like it, I know that. In fact, he threw a temper tantrum about not being asked to be in the film (trektoday says that he was), but personally the appearance of Shatner wouldn't have made the film any better. Case in point: the appearance of Spock "Prime." I mean really.

I actually was pleased they included Leonard Nimoy, he tied two eras together. He in my opinion made it feel more so like the original series and films. :)

Well to me it was a pathetic attempt at pleasing the TOS fans, which it didn't please me. Even for Star Trek, which has no consistency at all, the appearance of Spock "Prime" would have messed the timeline up to a point where you really can't restore it. If this movie would've been an older Trek, once Nero's ship was destroyed the timeline should have reset. But it didn't. That's what made it unbelievable. And what the heck with Kirk jumping all the way from Cadet to Captain?! As if that's real!

he's kirk, youngest captain in the fleet!

and i too liked old spock being there, to know it all, and tie it all together.

but that part was true if you read and followed Jim's career J j did keep that part factorial the timeline and the spock uhera and kirk love triangle i didn't like it either i think jj did a good job i thought you enjoyed the movie kenobi from what you told me he did put to much star wars in it

Star Trek Online, a personal request for a favor

If any of you haven't started playing this game yet and are considering doing so, might I ask a small favor?

There is a referral program that gives special ingame rewards to players if they recruit other players.

If you're interested in helping me, send me a private message on the forum with an email address and I'll set it up.

Thank you in advance if you decide to help.

Yes, it is a subscription based game, i.e: money to play.

As online games go, it's not a time intensive one.

I only played a few hours a day and made maximum level in less then a month.

And when you reach that point, your total playing time is roughly an hour per day, unless you do the Elite Level missions.

I wasn't sure if anyone on the forums was going to accept this offer, but I've had trouble finding people who want to play sci-fi games, so decided to try anyway.

William Shatner is coming out with a new documentary: The Captains. Not sure when it's going to be released, but I don't know if it's exclusively about Shatner or about the other actors who have played the main Starfleet captains (Patrick Stewart, the guy who played Sisko, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula).

Oh yes! I've heard about this, Aravis. It sounds like it should be really good. :D I'm so glad to see a thread for Trekkies on here! :)

Sisko ... Avery Brooks. He was a very cool kind of Captain. I prefer Capt Kirk to any of them. I never got into Enterprise too much, nor Voyager, so I can't say much about Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula. I guess in order of favorites:

Kirk
Picard
Sisko
Kate - I can't remember her captain name even!
Bakula - ditto

Thank you! Janeway! I knew that when you said it, just couldn't think of it. Maybe I will add a poll to this thread, and then I will have to find out Bakula's captain name.
