LOL! But first officers are supposed to be emotionless -- Spock, Data?!

No Chakotay was OK, I liked him all right.

But seriously, to say Seven was the reason you watched the show? Want to talk emotionless? She was totally emotionless, and the only reason to watch the show once she came on board was the silver spandex suit.

Janeway was somewhat more interesting; she was a good captain.

Belanna's attacking people was part of her problem that she had to overcome; that's what was cool about Voyager, it showed the transformation of people in a kind of arc. It was good that way, to show how people can change when they want to and they have others who believe in them.

Who else in the history of Trekdom made such a genuine transformation or blossoming? Even Data's emotion chip ddn't transform him; he was still just a robot. But Voyager had good stuff, human stuff (as it were) like that struggle of Belanna with her Klingon side and her coming to terms with herself. Spock always had the struggle, but never really came to terms with it until way late in his life when he became an old hippie and (if the new film is correct) began battling his own dentures for control of his face.

*snickers at bolded part*

I don't like repeating myself, so I won't argue about why I think BK's argument is kind of....not true and unfounded. Even my pessimistic self gets tired of arguing occasionally.

And yes, I knew that George Kirk was the first officer on board the Kelvin. I'm just trying ot forget I knew it.

Okaaay then!! Next time I want a promotion, I'm gonna beat the tar out of my supervisor and then show the people that I can change if they're supportive!!!!:D

Would it have been better if they had stuck her inthe brig for the entire Voyage, of unknown length in unchartered territory? The way it was handled was much better, and honestly, a definition of grace. That's what I liked about it.

Had Janeway been a typical Starfleet officer, I daresay she would have stuck the entire Maquis crew in the brig/cargo bays for the extent of the journey. But she didn't. She (and Chakotay) chose to try to work through the crews' differences because neither crew could afford to be alone in the DQ. I'm not saying that B'elanna's actions were justified...but, the way her character evolved was one of the best things about Voyager.

I am pressing my imaginary LIKE button. That is how I feel, too. I liked seeing offenses dealt with in a positive way that helped transform the character. That was a real strength of Voyager, as much as I watched of it, anyway. I didn't watch it the whole arc of the series.

I understand all of that. I still think it was wrong to give Torres a promotion right at the start! Couldn't she have worked her way up first? Specially after beating up her superior. I didn't see that as grace, more like rewarding negative behavior. Anyway, maybe I just never liked her. Not my type of girl.

Well, there was actually more to it then that.

The man Torres beat up wasn't her superior, they were of equal rank and Janeway was trying to decide which one got to be Chief Engineer.

In the end Torres was chosen because she was a better engineer then her rival.

Also, Torres has a problem with Klingon blood rage.
You can't exactly hold her responsible for anything that happens when she sees the world in shades of red.
It's something common to half-human/Klingon hybrids, they're not very good at handling this legacy from their Klingon parent.

Actually, I think she's very well controlled, otherwise anyone who looked at her the wrong way would end up bruised and broken.
Ask the Vulcan who was also experiencing blood rage, she broke his arm with her bare hands to "calm him down".

P.S: just noticed the poll, Sisko is my favorite.

Nice post, buck! I had forgotten about the episode Blood Fever. and the beauty of B'Elanna's character was that she didn't stay angry-Klingon.

and technically, if you want to look at it as "rewarding bad behavior", then janeway was rewarding every single member of the Maquis crew because they were basically traitors to the Federation.

I haven't seen much of many of the star Trek series the ones I have seen the most of are Next Generation, which used to be my favorite with Ricker as my favorite character, and the series that is my favorite and I have seen the most of is Star Trek Enterprise and Trip is defiantly my favorite character! My favorite episode is from Enterprise too I like the alternate reality episode two parter "In A Mirror Darkly"

I must say though I loved the new movie! It was funny, attention catching, and well made! I have seen a few of the original Star Trek and the actors they found for the characters were perfect! I'm looking forward to the next movie!

Oh well, I just never liked her is all. I disliked her from the moment she appeared in the show. The way she "earned" her promotion, and the whole character development throughout the series. And then, to top it all off, they paired her with Paris, who was one of my favorite characters. I have my opinion as to why the writers and producers decided on this pairing but my opinion is also controversial as "progressive" people will not like it so I won't post it. :p

I've never been able to get into Enterprise. To me it's like a cheap knock-off of Star Trek....I guess I just can't see anybody but Kirk in the Captain's seat of the Enterprise. ;)

Oh, random fact: yesterday, NASA woke up the shuttle crew to Captain Kirk telling them they've gone where no one has gone before. :D I think that William Shatner re-recorded and altered the opening of the Original Series specifically for the crew.

That's awesome. In that documentary "How William Shatner Changed the World," I really did love seeing the scientists and NASA engineers who were Star Trek geeks. It made me happy to see how a TV show could shape a generation.

LOL well I never got that much into the others like my cousin has but maybe I'll try watching some of them again and see it has been a while.

What did you think of the new movie? (sorry if you mentioned this earlier I haven't gone through all the posts:) )

Okay. I have heard different people with different opinion I thought it was very good. I never watched much of the original series though. I just remember that it was old and special effects were kind of corny. I have to say though that my dad was very impressed with the new movie and the actors they found for the characters.

Since my favorite captain is Kirk, and my favorite series is the original, I can't like the film. I did at first, but then I realized just how much of a joke it was. Abrams shredded the Trek universe apart. I don't mind alternate universes, because in fact, I believe that every series has had some encounter with an AU at one point or another. But Abrams didn't do what most Trek series did: go back to the original storyline BEFORE the events that set the AU into motion. For me, that's the biggest issue. If he wanted to explore a "what if", fine. But as a Trek director, he should have set things back into place the way they were. Personally, I would have rather seen how Kirk came to be in the TOS rather than this "Kirk" that we got, who is absolutely nothing like the Captain Kirk played by William Shatner. That goes for every character in the movie.

I will say, though, that McCoy was cast quite perfectly. I could certainly imagine him as the younger McCoy. But aside from that, I refuse to watch the movie.

I liked it. I thought the actors were well chosen except for Scottie, they just made him a joke which I did not like. I like that they left the new universe in place, because it allows for all new adventures.

ToS is my favorite Star Trek series, and I did not mind that they just renewed it with slightly different characters because of the events in the film; I think it was actually a clever way to make room for sequels in the new universe. Just my opinion.

I don't, and I don't like how Kirk was rewarded. I know Kirk was sort of a "bad boy" in the TOS, but seriously. He had very good reasons for disobeying orders and doing what HE thought was right. This "Kirk" didn't.

And don't even get me started on Spock. Gag.

In my opinion it would have been impossible, now after so many years, to recreate the original series I think there would have been a very large uproar if they tried to do that. I agree with Inky they can have new adventures and sequels without have to worries about making sure that their plots don't contradict the original story. My dad thought that was very clever and I agree. As I have said though I have not watched much of the Original Series, if I had I might feel the same as you Aravis, who knows.
