I'm not really a fan of the Starkiller saga. It just seemed kind of far-fetched to me, even if the plot was exciting in terms of action. It was kind of on the level of interesting but not quite believable fanfiction to me. :D

ETA: I tend to have a flexible view about Star Wars canon. I feel like the official canon has changed so often that I just adopt what I like into my personal canon and let other fans do the same. The EU is so crazy at this point that it is the only way to remain sane in my humble opinion.

What I consider canon is anything tied to the six films. EU and anything else is free to fit anywhere it wants. I adore Mara Jade as the Emperor's Hand and I think some additions to even the films, filling in those massive gaps is always interesting. However, Starkiller is just too far fetched for me. I liked a story that was published in Star Wars Insider that had Vader training an elite squad of Storm Troopers in the ways of the lightsaber and Force sensitivity. Vader ends up having to disbatch them and slay them and after there is moment of reflection that nearly brough me to tears. Vader says, "I would give it all up, all this power if it brought you back Padme. I would give up this power to love again." Very powerful, it even echoes in ROTJ when Vader saves Luke. :)

Very good insights, both of you. I've enjoyed reading this. Now I'm going to stick my two cents in.

Has either of you read the Last of the Jedi series by Jude Watson? It's a ten(!) book series (which I think is too many) by Jude Watson about the beginnings of the Empire. It follows the adventures of one Ferus Olin, a Padawan who escaped the Purge by leaving the Order during the Clone War. It also has many parts from the point of view of Vader, as he tries to conquer his emotions and forget Padme. I'd recomend it if you're up to reading a ten-book series.

I've heard of that series, but I didn't know any details about it. I always am interested in getting Vader's prespective on everything. He is such complex and intricate character. While yes he excutes failure like the Gestapo, he has emotions beneath that fascade of black armor. I like the stories that show he wrestling with having lost Padme and his children.

I read the first two books in that series, but maybe one day I'll get hold of the rest. I enjoyed the first two, and I like Watson's stuff overall. It's obviously written for a young adult audience, but I think that her stories have real heart to them and don't destroy canon characters like Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Anakin in terms of characterization. In JA, she did a good job showing regular missions for Jedi during the Golden Age of the Republic, and, in JQ, she did a nice job showing the darkening of that world.

Like Sir Godfrey, I do like when authors explore what goes on behind Vader's mask. I think Vader would descend further into darkness as time wore on, but he would never lose the light inside of him completely, since that is what Luke is able to draw on to redeem Anakin Skywalker.

It interesting that Vader fell to the Dark Side to save those he loves and through his dissension he ends up destroying everyone he loves. It is clear Vader is remorseful, but his loyalty to the Emperor probably is that dissillusionment that he's lost everything he loves and thus might as well dedicate himself to the cause of the Empire. I've read somewhere that Vader actually planned to get close to Palpatine, so that he could oneday slay him. However, I don't see any evidence of this in the films.

Matt Stover talked about that a bit in his novelization of ROTS (my favorite of the novelizations of the movies), but I don't remember that dynamic being clearly present in the films.

Matt Stover novelization of ROTS added an element that should have been in the film. Anakin is threatened by Obi-Wan, because he irrationally thinks Obi and Padme are having an affair. So that the showdown at Mustafar is more epic when if you know that Anakin believes Obi-Wan is trying to steal his bride.

I agree. Matt Stover manages to really get into the heads of Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme, making their interwined stories very personal, but also keeping up the large-scale epic tone of Star Wars. I think that Stover is one of the best EU authors out there. ROTS, Shadows of Mindor, and Shatterpoint are great reads in my opinion. His novels have depth in his consistent exploration of the dynamic between darkness and light, but they also have heart and humor.

New Villian For Star Wars Episode VII?

fdsfsdsdf_1.png

There is still much we do not know about “Star Wars: Episode VII” aside from the fact that J.J. Abrams is directing from a screenplay by Michael Arndt from George Lucas original scriptments in the early 70’s. Today, we have an unsubstantiated rumor from an Australian radio host that ( see article ) will play the villain. Here’s what the host Jo of Melbourne radio show FM had to say . . .

I think spin offs I would be interested in would be Obi-Wan: The Guardian of Hope and Yoda: The Legend of A Master. However, I don't want to learn too much about Yoda. There are some mysteries that should remain mysteries. Sometimes It's better to imagine and let your creative mind craft what happened in the past of the George Lucas' greatest characters.

I am curious about who will be the villan. Obviously, the Sith shall return, but who shall be the new Dark Lord of the Sith? I pray It's not the storyline of Dark Empire. We don't need Clone Palpatine or Luke falling to the Dark Side. I think it would be interesting to play out Heir to the Emperor. To have Mara Jade, Admiral Thrawn, and other leaders of the fallen Empire trying to keep control of systems. It could be like when Rome fell, the Holy Roman Empire remained a while before it complerely collapsed.

My nephew is currently obsessed with Star Wars. He prefer the Sith and Stormtroopers. I tend to dress up in my Jedi Robe and play Obi-Wan to his Vader. Suffice to say, It's been entertaining. :D

That's cool. It's always fun to share a Star Wars obsession with a family member and get to pretend to be a Star Wars character. I haven't been able to do that in years.

Sharing your affinity for Star Wars with the next generation allows you to delve into storehouse of knowledge that doesn't hold any credence during the rest of your life. :D

I always say that everyone's gotta have addictions. Mine are fairly harmless ones like Narnia and Star Wars. That's what I say in response to any ribbing I get for being a Star Wars fan.

I've been playing The Knights of the Old Republic Game lately. While playing perhaps the greatest Star Wars Game of all time, I've become enthralled with the Old Republic Era. As I've mention in another thread I like the Old Republic Era best because it's when the Sith were numerous and the Jedi engaged in the everyday affairs of diverse races.

A New Unseen Clip from The Clone Wars!

Yesterday, James Arnold Taylor (voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, other characters) tweeted this article along with a new, unseen clip of Plo Koon from The Clone Wars.

http://www.usatoday.com/videos/life/movies/2013/04/30/2123105/

Since it was announced several weeks ago that Clone Wars was over, I've been in a serious state of Star Wars depression. I never realized how much I loved this show until I read that we wouldn't be seeing any new episodes in the future. At the same time, though, this article and clip make me even more excited for Wars' future!

Thoughts on TCW? This clip? The article? Wars' future as it stands with Disney? Discuss!
