The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer World Premiere

That's a good point, Chisha, as long as they don't overplay it. In fact, there's a lot more argument for a king-on-king conflict between Edmund and Caspian at Deathwater than between Peter and Caspian anywhere.

I share a lot of Ink's sentiments regarding the trailer. I didn't notice anything egregiously out-of-place, except perhaps the glowing person on the deck who soars away into the air (Lilliandil, I presume? Ramandu's daughter?) What she's doing on the Treader at all, much less before they reach the Island, is going to take a bit of explaining. Other than that, nothing looked tremendously out-of-place. Edmund's bit of petulance in England about "being a king" will have to be viewed in context - it makes a difference whether it rises out of a frustrated desire to serve (Narnian) or frustrated desire for deference (not Narnian).

The bit with Jadis puts me a bit on edge as well - I share Ink's hope that the film makers don't try to make her the omnipresent Evil Engine of the Narnian world. Tilda did a stellar job as the original, and though the scene in Caspian was pushing it a bit, I don't think it went over the edge. But if they overplay it in Treader, they risk ruining it. We'll see.

I can understand a bit of the impetus here. In the book proper, Edmund almost disappears as a character. Skandar has done such a great job of making Edmund a lovable person with whom people connect that it's natural to want to do lots with him. I hope they "play him up" in more story-appropriate ways, such as the retaking of the Lone Islands (which has lots of room for development), Deathwater (which could safely be expanded without ruining the story), and Dragon Island. There's no need to drag in elements alien to the original story.

Speaking of Dragon Island, I was a little concerned that I didn't see any snippets that seemed to be drawn from that. But I'm reserving judgement - that would also also probably be the most special-effects heavy part of the story, so that segment may still be in the CGI foundries getting developed. I sure hope they don't short-shrift that: the events on Dragon Island are far more important to the story and the development of the character of Eustace than what happened on the Island of the Dufflepuds.

So, I'm interested but far from gushing. We'll see how things play out.

I wonder if they didn't include much else because maybe they still have a ways to go on visual effects? I wonder if they got out enough footage to make a trailer, and when it's closer to release time, they'll release a second trailer. I hope.

Saw the trailer and all I can say is I like it as a movie so far but am not quiet warm yet.
What is it with Edmund all of a sudden saying he is a King?
What are Peter and Susan doing in there?
Why is Jadis there?
Is it another try to make the movie look like a spectaculair fantasy movie than a part of the Chronicles?
Well we see in december for ourselves. I know I will like it as a movie on it's own just like PC but I doubt I can see it as a part of the Chronicles

Peter and Susan, like I told a friend, are probably only appearing as cameos and/or to help explain why lucy and Edmund are with Eustace in the first place. For those not familiar with the book, having it visually explained that Peter and Susan were elsewhere would explain to non book fans that Lucy and Edmund were by themselves.

And the reason I suspect Jadis appears is the island of dreams sequence. Personally, it looks quite creepy (and quite fantastic if that little snippet was any indication), but I have a feeling that is why she makes an appearance. I, however, hope that that is the extent of her appearance.

I noticed somethin odd (and POTW, I didn't like Lilliandil glowing. But she wasn't on the deck of the DT; it looked like they were among ruins from the screenshots): what was Caspian doin with the children and Reepicheep rowing in the lily sea? I noticed that in the trailer/screenshots, and it's got me curious. Does he go with them only far enough to see them safely to the island?

On a second note about Lilliandil: could it be that she appears to Caspian, Lucy and Edmund as a messenger? Perhaps that will play into a Caspian/Lilliandil love story, but I'm curious as to find out why she's glowing like a radioactive object.

good question, ak, i did not notice that.

i kind of like ramandu's daughter buzzing in along the way, so pc can already be half in love with her by the time they reach the island.

i forgot to say, i think the ship looks marvelous!

i am really excited to see the movie! i think chisa and potw are right, that if ed's insistence that he's a king comes from a desier to serve, to defend and protect, that is quite difference than a desire to be the boss.

nice to see you here judy from kansas!
and of course, vanessa!

:)

True, I suppose Lilliandil comin in earlier would help make them falling in love a little more believable...but still. I'm not sure how much I even like the actress. Oh yes, the ship looks awesome!

If Ed has the same character attitude as Peter, wouldn't it be somewhat better placed? I mean, if you listen to the radio dramas, the tone of Ed's voice in talking to Caspian (especially in the beginning and at Deathwater Island) sounds a lot like, "I was king first; you obey me." So if they did make him that way, I think it'd kinda be closer to the book than Peter's brattiness.

Why is everyone complaining about the differences with the books and the changes ?? I miean, I perfectly understand we, Narnia fans, want the producers to stick to the book, but after all, a movie is a movie and a book is a book... PLUS, CS Lewis is not here to agree or disagree with the producers, telling them he's not okay with the changes unlike for Rolling with Harry Potter

I mean, we should understand that they can't really stick to the book for a lot of things [personnally, VotDT wasn't my favourite book: I thought it missed a point to the story, so I'll be glad if they add some action, but that's my own opinion], and sure, having an Edmund arrogant is very disappointing, but after PC [the movie] we should be ready to see big changes and not raise our hopes too high converning the story :S

I think that we should watch the movie as people who never read the book, because as I said before, the movie isn't the book, and just because it doesn't stick to the story, doesn't mean it's not great. I thought PC was amazing :) And I'm sure te producers know what they're doing, they're not idiots, otherwise they wouldn't be making the movie in the 1st place

Thank you. That's basically what I've tried to say since before PC came out, but nobody listens to hte fact that we do not know what will unfold in the movie. Period. All we're getting from this trailer are glimpses, which incidentally, may not even be in the movie! There were a few shots from the PC trailers that weren't in the film.

that's true :) but the trailer is AMAZING , and maybe it makes us think Edmund is arrogant when he says "I am a king", but maybe it's just once in the whole movies, and considering how the man talked to him I understand he could have been mad ...

I'm utterly disappointed in the trailer! It just got worse and worse as it went on! Everything looks fake. The mood of the trailer itself is fleeting, choppy and flippant. Lucy and Edmund look stoned. Caspian looks pissed. Aslan looks digitally cheated. This is just SO not cool. I waited months for this?!

:(

sorry but I don't agree with you ... I think the trailer really reflected the magic of Narnia ... Although, I don't really know what your expectations were so ...

I'm just going to post on here what I posted on imdb. I hope you see why I'm disappointed:

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just sooooooooooooooooooooo disappointed!

Ok, let's break down this failure of a trailer:

Starts out with birds merrily flapping away in front of what I guess is a Cathedral. There is a sign about enlisting.

Cut to Edmund - "Are you sure you're 18?" asks the registration officer. Edmund not so inconspicuously says, "WHY DO I LOOK OLDER?" (Is this supposed to be some inside joke about his age?)

After being called a squirt, we see why Edmund has it so hard: because he's a king. It's that age-old Pevensie problem (not at all mentioned in the books) where you develop an inferiority complex after returning from Narnia to our world. Why though should he worry about defending the country against Hitler, when he's SUPPOZE TO BE HELPING (Lucy) WID DA GROZE SHREES?

Next comes the painting, if that's what you want to call it. I've seen Jackson Pollock works far more profound than this computer-generated hodge-podge.

Not only that, but now we've suddenly left military recruitment outside and moved inside to Eustace's bedroom. People are probably wondering, "Who's that SMALLER squirt standing next to them?"

I thought the painting would be larger to begin with and water would burst through it in holes. Instead, it filters over like a controlled-special-effects cascade. It doesn't look real or convincing to me at all.

Then we see them swim up to the Dawn Treador. She looks as fake as she does in the previous stills-like a carnival ride!

Caspian hold Lucy at the top of the ladder. Is Edmund trying to fight them off with that prop?

Aslan, who is a few inches SHORTER than Lucy (I thought every year she grows, so too shall he), officially welcomes her. "You have come far, but your journey lies beyond" we hear him say.

What journey would that be? Saying "Hi" to an adorable mouse? Very epic. Waving to a Caprisun mermaid doing the backstroke? How adventerous. Watching a magician play boomerang with a colorful scroll?

No. And since there are no wars to fight this time (thank God), why ARE they here? In what ways are they ALL going to be tested?

For Edmund, it means facing suffocating green gases on the dark island. "I can make you my king" says Jadis, captivating the impressionable lad. Um, actually you can't sister, cuz u DEAD, remember? Go back to being dead please.

For Lucy, it means casting a spell on herself to be beautiful. Aslan is angry with her for just a second but rewards her by making it snow inside.

Apparently it doesn't have anything to do with Eustace or Caspian, as we barely see them in the trailer.

Then there is Liliandil, as I suppose we must now refer to her. She's pretty, blue, and can go from earth to sky faster than a shooting star. Once she marries Caspian, are they going to spend their honeymoon in the cosmos?

Luckily we get to see Aslan again at the end. But why do they show the Pevensies, walking down the beach like runway models? But we see barely any of Caspian, Drinian, Rynelf, Eustace, or Lord Bern. I hope they're not just extras in the actual film.

I could have done WITHOUT the voiceover in the trailer. I hope whoever edited the trailer does not edit the film! Scenes were jumbled in such an anticlimactic and disappointing way. Perhaps FOX and Walden Media should have spent the money on something else. This appears to be a total botch.

A few other comments:

Lucy and Edmund look stoned.

Caspian looks mad.

The shot with the dufflepuds looks like something out of Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"

Why does Edmund's sword glow blue? Won't some people accuse Narnia of copying off of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"?

No offense to the producers, but when people watch a trailer, they usually don't care right then and there who's directing the movie.

And all this coming from a true Narnia fan who has been on this site and imdb almost daily for the past several years, and who HAD great expectations for this film.

I agree with that - we ought to wait and see how the film actually plays out. Remember, the trailer is made of bits and pieces that were selected by who-knows-who to entice people to see the entire movie, not to be a synopsis of the story as presented on film. For instance, one of the most dramatic points in the story is the "judgement scene" where Caspian calls Gumpas to account for his stewardship of the Lone Islands, ultimately deposing him. I hope they stay reasonably faithful to that, but if they want to convey the drama of the retaking of the Lone Islands within two seconds, they're more likely to show a dust-up in the courtyard than two men facing each other in a council room. (I'm not all that worried if they "Hollywood up" the Lone Islands a bit - there's plenty of room for some action without ruining the story.)

You do know it's just a trailer, right? it's not the movie...

and all those questions you ask "what is their journey?" " why does Edmund have a blue sword?" well the trailer is supposed to make you wonder all those things so you actually want to go see the movie, I guess it's not working in your case since you hated or disliked the trailer, but I'm sure that there are a lot of people who felt like they wanted to see the movie right away and everyone has their opinion. I have one question: are you a producer? a critic? [just curious]

oh and thanks PrinceoftheWest, I made my bannerimmediatly after wathcing the trailer :D

Everybody has the right to like or dislike the trailer. No need to attack someone when he/she states his/her opinion. There are many people who like the trailer and also many who don't. Tirian gave his opinion and only time and Tirian himself can say if he liked the movie or not.

As we often know things are left out or are seen in a complete different light.
But IF Susan and Peter are REALLY into Narnia again then they must fix the PC movie. Because in that movie (also in the book) Aslan told them they wouldn't return to Narnia again. But yet still too early to judge. I'm going to watch it anyway ;)

Hm. When I saw that part I assumed he had drawn it on Daughter-of-Ramandu...er, Lilly, and she "zapped" it with her blue magic.:D

I thought Aslan looked a bit fake in that first shot of him standing beside Lucy. And I wish there was a bit more Eustace in the trailer. Overall, however, it seemed OK. Oh...except that scene in the recruiting office. Edmund seemed to be suffering from whatever was plaguing Peter in PC. Which makes you wonder why Susan and Lucy aren't.

And what was with that battle scene? What on earth was going on there?

Oh, well, I'll probably be seeing the film, if not in the theater, on DVD.

By the way, was that Reepicheep on the beach with the Pevensies with Aslan? That's kind of odd.

If you'll remember from the book, Ed talked down to Caspian, the same way Peter talked down to him in the movie.

And to whoever pointed out that Aslan was shorter than Lucy: did you not notice that it was in a mirror? At least what it looked like. And it looked as if the mirror was on the DT, which would of course make sense as to why he's smaller. AS Caspian himself said, Aslan couldn't fit into the cabins on the DT.

Well, overall I think it was pretty good, but like ink, I have some reservations. I'm gonna respond to some of ink's points here, because I think she makes some great comments! :)

1. Edmund! What are they doing to him?! Is he going to be the same spoiled brat Peter was in PC? That will be the end of Narnia films for me if they are.

Exactly. I cringed big-time at the first scene of the trailer. Why don't the writers understand that going to narnia and becoming king or queen is supposed to make the kids act more regal and noble, not like spoiled children demanding special treatment! I hope they don't make too much of this...

3. Tilda. If she just turns up as Edmund's worst nightmare in that dream island, then it's cool. If she's some kind of over-arching evil that is supposed to weave all the Narnia films together, I don't like it. Who needs it? But we'll see.

I'm pretty sure she was just in the island of dreams. I thought the same thing until I watched the trailer a couple times, and I'm pretty sure it was just in the dream scene.

5. Lucy. Adorable as always. I think she saw Susan in the spell book because that's when she was thinking of saying the beautifying spell, which would make sense as Susan is the beauty of the family. LOVED the winter snowfall in the magicians house when Lucy is standing at the spell book. That looked magical.

Yes, yes, yes!

8. The Magician/the Duffers. Loved the magician, hard to see the Duffers so quick, but I think I am going to like them.
Yes, I think you're right.

10. Overall I am encouraged except for now I am HORRIFIED that they will ruin Ed's character like they did Peter's. If this happens, I will seriously not want them to make anymore Narnia movies because it will be clear they do not understand the stories.

I don't think it will quite be this bad, but it's definitely something to be wary of. I hope it is just when Ed's outside Narnia that he acts this way, but once he's inside, he better be the forgiven, noble, kind, and strong leader he is in the books.

Also, it was really nice to see so many of the different little adventures and islands in the trailer (duffers, dreams, lilys, sea people, etc.) Its looks like they are pretty much going to stick with the main story-line, which is very exciting because it's action packed!

The only other major unanswered question for me is at the very end of the book when Edmund and Lucy reach the edge of the world with Aslan. What will the dialogue be there? Will they butcher the whole climax of the book and rewrite it with cliche hollywood secular ending? Or will they stick to the book and CS Lewis original intention and have the non-politically correct Christian message? We'll see!
