My choices (in order):
1: James Earl Jones. --- The first one that comes to mind, and probably the best one.
2: Christopher Lee. --- Wonderful voice.
3: John Rhys-Davies. --- Very powerful voice, good dramatic range.

Christopher Lee has a wonderful voice, as does John Rhys-Davies - but I think they are too well known by their voice. If I heard John Rhys-Davies play the part, I think I might recognize him right off and it would distract me a bit from the film itself.
On the other hand, he was almost unrecognizable when playing Treebeard. I'm not sure if it was modified with a computer, or what. But his voice was disguised pretty well.
4: Patrick Stewart. --- He has a great voice, and good range, from majestic and authoritative to quieter and more emotional. On the other hand, maybe not deep and booming enough?
5: Ian McKellen. --- Great voice. Could do a very good job, but his voice is probably too recognizable nowadays.
6: Morgan Freeman. --- Good deep voice. But possibly not bombastic enough.
Sean Connery could be good (he has that appropriate growly quality) however the problem is that he has a
very distinctive and recognizable voice--even more so than any of the others on my list. It would distract the audience from the performance.
Come to think of it, most of these are quite recognizable, so it will probably be a more obscure actor or a total unknown.
