Upon leaving the theater, I overheard both rants and raves...some very extreme. But the thing that struck me the most on exiting was the overall age of the audience. There were only a handful of children!
We need to keep that in mind here, especially when listening to the critiques. The Chronicles of Narnia are childrens' books. Beautiful, allegorical, lovely childrens' books...but just that, not adult theological texts.
And, with that in mind, I was enchanted. Sure, the movie wasn't as deep or as moving as the book...but what film ever is. I still laughed and cried as I do with each reading. Yes, it also wasn't completely accurate, but hey, they did have the dead bluebottle on the windowsill, right? I'll also concede that an obvious effort was made to make the story more "pc"...but it wasn't near as bad as I feared. The Pevense children were splendidly done, the creatures amazing, and Aslan...decent. I especially loved the Lucy/Tumnus relationship.
In the end, it wasn't as spectacular as I think it deserved to be. But the diehard fan in me was appeased and the child, delighted. I am content...and busy fandangoing tickets to go again!
