The movie was powerfully delivered and I went to see it three times at the cinema and came out feeling emotional each time and I bought the DVD too, so there must have been something good about it. However, as a once a year reader of the Chronicles for the last 35 years, I would expect this to be the case for a movie version which can draw on special effects and gorgeous orchestral resources. That's just about the budget and technology.

CGE and fabulous sets (apart from that dreadful scene displaying the bigature of the witches castle),aside I found the emotional and visual journey had some bad hiccups. The time flow reversal when we flick back to Dawn and resurrection after the battlers have been going at it in full day-light for quite a while already, is a distraction. I think the director would have been better to have had the ravening mob from the stone table come running down the hill in the pre-dawn darkness and falling upon the barely-prepared encampment. How about a few hags, incubuses and werewolves skulking up on the tents - shadows sliding across the canvases whilst sleepers slumber. It would have kept that creepy threatening atmosphere going which just didn't last long enough to be satisfying. Too much reliance on the heroic line up in the full daylight. Direction for Susan's character also seemed rather negative or even lax. There's a capable young actor doing a great job but with all sorts of crappy pouting and hmphing as her main delivery. And her getting trounced by Lucy with the knife at the target practice session was pure nastiness on the part of the director. Not in the spirit of the story and not what the knife was for.

Menagerie make up was dreadful! And talk about wooden acting from extras! If you're going to have a named character with lines who sacrifices himself, at least have some warmth from them first. Oreius and the other centaurs should have had no make-up at all!It was too obvious and the jaw-line reconstructions looked just awful! Satyrs had no facial mobility and we didn't get close up and cosy with ANY minor extras. As for the ones with bull-heads - rock on Robot Monster! And next time you get a gaggle of fauns congratulating the future kings and queens of Narnia, have them do a hoofy little prance-about or impromtu dance Andrew! They're meant to be camp! And what was that dreadful mat doing outside Aslan's tent on all that dried grass! Not enough attention to detail!
