“The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” – stage musical

Lyrics

LUCY: It’s times like these, when you’re not here,
and I’m alone, I give in to fear.
The dark of night surrounds my soul,
Without your strength, I lose control.

If you were here to sing my song,
I’d face the night and you would make me strong!
But – I’m alone, and the storm is near.
It’s times like these I need you here.

(instrumental break)

Then I call your name and hear you say:
“Don’t be afraid, I’m never far away.”
With strength I stand, though I’m on my own,
When I speak your name, I’m not alone!

Behind the Song

In LUCY’S PRAYER, Lucy and her companions sailing on the royal Narnian vessel, the Dawn Treader are trapped in the nightmarish void of Dark Island, where they learn dreams AND nightmares come true. Alone and afraid of the terrors of the dark, she begins this song wishing for Aslan, the Great Lion, to protect them. Out of the depths of fear and despair, Lucy learns of faith, courage, and trust. A Reprise in the Finale is a touching climax to the stage production

This song is Lucy’s “Big Number” — a musical theater showpiece for the solo artist. It’s one of those moments when the stage goes dark, save for three spots on the soloist at center stage. Lucy gets to express her full range of emotions in this piece, from a whispered prayer to the no-holds barred, pull-out-all-the-stops belt at the end.

Briana Izzo gave the beautiful vocal rendition on the demo recording. I performed the orchestral track on my Kurzweil synth in my studio — Studio By The Pond.
