Ben Barnes talks Dawn Treader with MSN in Exclusive Interview

MSN Movies’ Andy Gibbons had the opportunity to speak to Ben Barnes about the trailer for the next Narnia film: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to get his thoughts on the trailer and how the film would be different under a new studio like 20th Century Fox.

With the trailer for The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader debuting this week the buzz has really started, it promises to be a big Christmas release….

Yeah, I hope it is. Personally I’m quite excited that it’s going to be 3D. It’s my favourite of the seven books, I think it’s one of the best stories and it’s got some good human characters as well – I think Eustace, who Will Poulter plays brilliantly, is a really funny character. It’s got a lot of the fun magical stuff of the first ones and I’ve got some fun action stuff which is cool. It’s going to be good I think.

  1. No big revelations or anything, but good to hear a little from Ben. He was rather neglected in the trailer, but seems to take it all in stride.

    • I agree. Though, honestly, I always felt the story was more about Eustace (who I more felt was neglected) and Reep than Caspian (though it’s been some time since I’ve read it… it could be more about Caspian than I remember). I think Barnes is right in saying that it captures the scope of the movie.

On the upside, it’s a teaser trailer, which I’m fairly certain means there will be a full length trailer later. And I’m sure we’ll see more of our characters then. 🙂

  2. I thought Eustace was neglected quite a bit in the trailer. I always think of his character first when I think about this book.

    • yeah…you are definitely right. I’m sure once everyone goes and sees it they will all be blown away by Eustace and his role. Remember the footage from along time ago seeing Eustace throwing a fit on the ship? Having seen that I think Will Poulter is a perfect fit and will bring so much to Eustace. Lets hope he stays on board for Sliver Chair and Last Battle.

    • Agreed, though I’m sure he’ll factor a great deal into the movie. There’s no way they can neglect his transformation.

If you pause at about 00:30, you can get a good look at him. Poulter looks exactly like Eustace (if a bit thinner than I imagined, but I honestly couldn’t care about that). I’m hugely optimistic.

  3. I feel the same way about the characters being neglected in the trailer. Frankly I am a bit disapointed in the trailer. I hope the other ones are much better.

    • It’s sort of a teaser trailer, so like you say, there will be more. I’m optimistic that we’ll see our characters in the other trailers.

And heh, if not, there’s always the movie! Though I disagree in that think this trailer was absolutely fantastic, I think it can be said that the movie will be far, far greater. And we’ll get plenty of characters in that. 🙂

  4. I’m pretty sure i’m not the first one to say this, but will poulter is absolutely perfect as Eustace. And i’m glad they aged caspian up a little bit. it now seems that there is a little bit more of ben in the character now. i praise them for making the telmarines british in this movie. looking forward to the movie and seeing more footage.

    • But the telmarines are not british. They were from the mediteranian area. The spanish heritage they gave them was dead on. They should have left it the way they found it. That is just my own thought on the matter.

      • i’m not saying that it was a mistake to make them spanish in the last movie. i’m just saying that this might be a teeny bit closer to the book.

        • C.S. Lewis never gave any telling of what their accents were, although they use “by jove” and stuff like that so i see your point. i still think that some people might find it odd that they change like that.

  5. I thought it made sense how much screen time the Pevensies got in the trailer compared to Eustace and Caspian. This is technically their last movie–depending on how TLB and HAHB are done–and the Pevensies ARE the main characters. 😉 I wouldn’t be surprised if Eustace has quite a bit of trailer time later on, but he IS a new character while Lu, Ed, and Caspian are returning ones. As for Caspian, this really isn’t his movie as much as it is the other 3. He’s a main character, he has some key parts especially in the beginning and at the end, but the real character development belongs to Eustace. Lucy is the one with the strongest connection to Aslan, and this movie should show that (because the book certainly emphasizes it), and Edmund gets to be king without his brother around for once. 😉 I at least have always gotten the impression from the book that it was a story about Eustace, Lucy, and Edmund that Caspian happened to be in. (Sorry fan girls! :D)

    • that is an excellent point. (and you don’t have to apologize to this fan-girl; totally okay with me)
