Walden Media’s Flaherty Confirms: Walden and Fox talking Magician’s Nephew Movie

According to a report from NRB’s Sunday Super Session in Nashville, Dekkie writes that Walden Media and Fox are talking about doing The Magician’s Nephew next.  This confirms what we reported a little while ago, even though many polls put The Silver Chair into the leading spot, that book has proven to be much more popular with fans.

Michael Flaherty just confirmed that Walden was talking with Fox about the Magician’s Nephew.

I just got back from attending NRB’s Sunday Super Session in Nashville, TN, where Flaherty and Simon Swart from Fox spoke about “Connecting with Audiences in an Age of Distraction.” And Narnia, of course. A few noteworthy tidbits:

When asked by Phil Cooke of Cooke Pictures and host of this session if Walden would make any more Narnia movies, Flaherty responded, without hesitation: “Yes. We are talking to Fox about making the Magician’s Nephew next.” The audience clapped. He then mentioned that there was some debate about whether SC or MN should be next, and asked the audience to clap for their favorite. A few (including myself, loudly) clapped for SC, but the majority cheered for MN.

Flaherty also referred to Gresham as “the CS Lewis Cop,” and talked about when the production team would wonder what Lewis thought of something, Gresham would say something like about how once he was having dinner with Jack and he said that if there ever was a movie made it would have to include such and such. Flaherty, laughingly, added that he wondered how many of those stories actually happened.

Phil Cooke talked about the time he was at the first screening of the VDT trailer, 20 minutes after the trailer was shown, he received a notification on his phone from Google about all these Narnia sites having detailed reports about the trailer. “These people are crazy.” I laughed – because we are.

Flaherty gave a “huge, heartfelt thank  you” to the audience for their support of the film, saying that many thought the franchise was “dead” after PC. He seemed pleased and not worried that VDT made “only” $100 million domestically.

Swart also talked about how excited Fox was to be able to pick up the franchise: “We get a shot at Narnia?” and saying that they “jumped in with both feet in.”

  1. w00t w00t!!! And the anticipation begins again! I’m SO EXCITED they want to go through with the series. I must say, I don’t have any problem with Walden making MN first. I actually like it better than SC. The “magical” books were always my favorites. And I’ve gotta admit, I’m super psyched about Tilda having a main role again.

        • What that is not fair! Tilda is the only one who plays that role well no one can replace what she does!

          • I think if they replaced her that would be fine… I know the fans love her… But at the same time she seems to be getting old. I would think a different actor would be better, but they are talking about making MN next not SC!

          • yeah it is! she the lady of the green kirdle isn’t even supposed to be the white witch!

          • Hey Marshell, u forget one thing: it says specifically at the end of SC when the owls are talking with Rilian that they decide that the Lady of the Green Kirtle must be part of the same crew of the White Witch. Okay, i’ve memormized the book because i have it underneath my mattress. So i’m for them getting someone new. Tilda has been exhausted.

        • hi paul martin, i’m assuming u have some important role to do with the movies. when u cast polly, i think u should only do open auditions, so that the girls who dont have agents or whatever have the same chance as the girls that do. i did suggest this, and many girls like the idea. they described the order in which they cast as ‘unfair’ because we were left to last. this probably wont get far, but could u please suggest it to walden and fox.the process may be long, but atleast girls get to live part of the dream and audition.

          • Paul has nothing to do with the films. He’s just a fan like the rest of us, with a good deal of rather useless insight to the making of the films (useless because he can’t tell us anything).

          • well, he can. he just told us that they’re thinking of making mn, and that tilda wouldnt be cast for the white witch so 😛

          • avran, i somehow think you have something against paul, or you just dont like him. and before you deny that you dont, why else would you say he’s useless and argue with him. and no, i’m not nitpicking your words :l

          • Arvan, there is plenty I can tell you, but I have to wait until I’m allowed. Disney and Fox had different ideas about when certain things were appropriate, though.

As for casting, I’m not involved in that. I can pass along information to the decision makers, but know that doing open auditions costs quite a bit more than seeking out established actors. When it comes to the films themselves, with each film I’ve gotten closer and closer to my goal of being involved in more than ‘just a fan’ way.

As for the ‘useless insight,’ that same thing can be applied to everyone that signed a contract surrounding the production of the film. To put it into perspective: Sean Astin’s contract for Lord of the Rings was such that, if he spoiled anything, he’d owe 3 times the cost of production. (via his book, There and Back Again: An Actor’s Tale)

          • thanks for the help paul. i knew there would be some problem with open casting. but, despite the fact i dont have an agent or whatever, would there still be a slight chance i would get an audition if i sent in a video and a reseme(if thats what you call it)? i understand you cant tell us anything, it would spoil the suspense!

          • I think if you’re good enough, there’s a slight chance… but that depends on if they’re willing to look at the submissions. Sometimes submissions like that just wind up in the trash, sadly.

          • if i posted my video on youtube, and made a list of people who recomend it, would they watch it, because of the amount of praise.if not, i’d be ok with it going out with the rubbish, because i’m not a trained actor, and never will be, unless i get the part 🙂

      • I should hope not. We see Jadis’s origin in MN. The Lady of the Green Kirtle is a completely different character. Tilda can’t play all the villains in Narnia lol.

        • I love MN and it needs to be done next as it was the first story in the series and one of the most beautiful, with Aslan singing Narnia into existance and explaining how the lampstand came to be where it was. The professer was the boy in the story and it was what he did that brought Janis to Narnia and it was he who built the wardrobe – so it will explain so much of the other movies. Tilda is the only one who can really bring life to the character the way the book intended, she was perfect for the part.

          • YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH Elizabeth!!! Glad we’re on the same page! you’re right!

  2. Hm, I love Magicians Nephew (It will show people who haven’t read the books how Narnia came to be), but honestly I would rather see Silver Chair first. Its high on my list of favorites. I just watched the old BBC version of it, and it desperately needs to be remade!!!

    • Can everyone stop being so negative? Be glad about this because there are more Narnia movies to come so stop complaining just because they’re not making SC…yet. They will someday probably after all think about all those books that aren’t being made into movies so be happy about this it’s not like you hate MN. I LOVE MN! So be happy that there’s going be a Narnia movie .

  3. WHAT! MN is my favorite book of the 7, but they HAVE to make SC first before Eustace gets too old and before Caspian gets too old (since he will be at the end of the movie in the river in Aslan’s Country as a young man again).

    • On the contrary, it actually might be better for them to hold off on making SC for a while. If they make SC right now, it’ll be at least 6-8 years before they could make LB. Think of how much Will Poulter will have aged in that time!

However, if they make SC closer to when they make LB (as it seems they’re doing), there will be a much smaller gap in Will’s aging.

Although I really will be sad to not see him again for a few years. Haha.

      • but that doesn’t make sense, eustes is *sepouset to to age a lot more between SC and LB tnan between VODT and SC

        • I doubt Will Pouter’s age would be an issue that couldn’t be overcome, but if that’s not right and it is really difficult: one option could be to film Will sometime this year in a school outfit standing about, looking puzzled, looking intense, walking this way and that etc and then artfully cut that into the scenes with close ups of hands, and other body movement for the start & end of SC when they get around to making it.

Then the older look could be explained with fidelity when filming SC by stating how the Narnian air makes one look older if have learnt stuff there on trips before(as we all know).

They might need to add to the pre SC footage abit when making the film depending on artistic issues, but that could definitely be done with no problem…if this issue is a real problem to begin with.

        • Why is everyone so worried about Eustace’s age? I don’t remember any of the books saying how old any of the characters are.

          • The loin the Witch and the Wardrobe does….just thought i would let you know…

  4. Just from a personal perspective, I’m glad they’re thinking of doing the Magicians Nephew next. I prefer that book over the Silver Chair. Either way though, I’m stoked the series is continuing!

  5. On one hand, this makes our household VERY happy because a) It’s not dead!!! and b) MN has never been adapted onscreen, large or small. On the other hand, Will Poulter so knocked it out of the park with his Eustace in Dawn Treader, and it breaks my heart to think this would likely kill our chances to see him develop even further in SC.

But the franchise moves on, and that’s the best news of all!!!! 😀 <

    • Will is getting older!! Hello! This is kinda disapointing. I was really looking forward for SC. But at least we might have more time for getting ready for Sc, and not just jump in at last minute.

Do they really think that people are going to want to watch that? I thought , from what i saw here, that fans are wanting to see SC ? It made sense to me. ( May i remind you they mentoned jill pole !!!) what a cut off. And I am not saying that i hate MN, i just was looking forward for SC.

      • Don’t be sad about ‘Silver Chair’ fellow Narnians!

A successful ‘Magician’s Nephew’ package will not only ensure Silver Chair, but it will ensure the creative license that will make the future ‘Silver Chair’ a far better adaptation than one that could happen now if it was being done next. It is that successful creative license with the general movie going public that the ‘new’ MN story gives in appreciation of Narnia, which will see all seven Narnian chronicles successfully made with the same type of art as the first three 🙂

I would love an Andrew Adamson ‘Horse & his Boy’, but that can only come after a particular Silver Chair, & all these stories to come can only be fully made for and appreciated by the general movie going public, after a great ‘Magician’s Nephew’.

      • I’m with you. Like it or not, there is an age limit in Narnia. And it won’t be the same if the switch out Eustace. Of course, it would be the same issue with The Last battle since he’s in that too.
I think they put a bit much into the polls. Narnia..all of it, is popular enough to sell tickets and DVDs and all no matter what order they do it in. I wouldn’t care about the order, except for losing the actors. And how can they keep him, if Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy all hit an age limit, it won’t make sense if Eustace ages but still gets in.

  6. It’s nice that Narnia’s getting another movie, I’m just worried because of VDT and how I didn’t care for it. I’m hoping they bring Andrew Adamson back to direct because he has a real knack for detail in the Narnia films, something which I think was lacking in Dawn Treader.

    • Really? Did you see Prince Caspian? lol. I Hope Michael Apted continues, VDT was much closer to the book than PC. I hated PC the first time I watched it (since then I’ve gotten over the screw ups), but I’ve loved VDT every time! (I mean no offense, I’ve just never heard of anyone not liking VDT.)

      • Yes I saw PC, I saw it the day it came out and fell in love with it. VDT’s good points, in my opinion, was its humor. There are a few things I found wrong with it afterwards (which I won’t go into because this is not the place for it), but it is my least favorite of the three. If you wish to hear more of my opinion, feel free to email me, and now you’ve heard of at least one person not caring too much for VDT.

I hope that Adamson comes back because, especially for PC, he liked to deal with REAL things and make it hard to deferentiate between CGI and real. There was a depth to LWW and PC that I didn’t feel in VDT. Maybe it’s because I’ve only seen it once, but if I need to see it twenty times to get that depth, then I don’t think that was particularly good.

        • i know what you mean, i liked it while i was watching it but like you, afterwards i found several thing that were wrong

    • really?i thought all the detail in dawn treader was amazing. i mean did u c the detail on the walls inside the dawn treader well on the walls were paintings of the apple tree from mn and of tashban the capital of calorman and of the lanpost and mr tumnus bu i agree i would like to see andrew do at least one more narnia movie maybe the last battle

      • When I said “detail”, I didn’t mean just the props. I also meant the detail in the story and the characters – Andrew made *all* the characters feel real. For me at least, Edmund, Lucy, and even Aslan – three key characters for me – were somewhat fake. And again, this probably isn’t the best place for me to say what I thought of VDT. Is there a better place?

  7. This is so exciting… 😀
And who says Will Poulter won’t be able to be in SC even if it gets made after MN? Yes, he’ll be older, but I think not older than William Moseley was in PC; Eustace isn’t really that old in VDT. Will is just too good not to be taken back in Silver Chair!

  8. Well here we go. I’m realy excited to see what they do with this one, cos it has one of my all time favorite scenes in it. I just hope they don’t end up having to stop with MN. Each film could be the last here. I have high hopes though. If it does well, the ONLY logical next step is to go ahead and do SC before Will gets too old. I thought Walden and Fox did an awesome job with VDT. Here’s hoping they do just as good a job with MN. Cheers!

  9. Finally..But I prefer SC..I like MN.But for people SC would,I guess have been more engrossing as it has Eustace and they mentioned Jill at the end of VDT.And Will is already taller than he was in VDT..He’ll grow up too much..Or they should do both the movies together and release SC first..then after a short interval bring out MN while the spirit is still there.Maybe that would make more profit, but it’s hard right?
It all seems confusing as ,up till now no one had mentioned MN being next. This is the 1st highlighted announcment of MN..Everyone was on making SC if there was another movie..
Well, wait, pray and watch out..That’s all we can do..And I’m just glad that there is going to be another movie.. 🙂 For Aslan 🙂 😀

  10. I’m just glad they’re thinking about making another. I love the Silver Chair and I absolutely love the Magicians Nephew. I would be thrilled if they make either. Magicians Nephew come out soon. Please.

  11. I think that MN has the potential to be massively more successful than SC could be, and if they pull it off right, it might create popular emand for more narnia films (including SC). It is much easier to market to all those LWW movie goers and casual fans.

  12. I wish they would make SC next. That is next in publication order. It is also my favorite book in the series. Graham said Switon won’t play Jadis? Or were you referring to the LIGK? I want her to play Jadis, but I would NOT want her to play the LIGK because that to me implies that the white witch and LIGK are the same person, which is completely false. (Jadis and the white witch, however, are the same person.) My thought is that if they make MN next, it may be the last film. It’s a prequel to LLW, and that is just strange to jump right into this movie after VDT. Also, what will they tell those people who haven’t read the books? They’ll be deathly confused. Will they have to put on the trailers “go read all the books!” but that brings up chronological vs. Publication order. (I will not rant about that) There are so many problems with making the MN next.

  13. I’m glad they will continue ! But it would be better if they make SC fist, because Will Poulter will be too old. Even if they make MN fist, will Will Poulter play Eustace in SC ?

  14. The Critics said the franchise was done with. I glad the fans said otherwise. The MN is fine with me. I to prefer Silver Chair, but I can happy to see the series going on.

  15. The Magician’s Nephew will be great to see. I’d rather have MN than SC because it has never been adapted before and Will Poulter still might be young enough by the time they get to SC. If a lot more people clapped for MN at the convention then that might mean that it will bring in a better crowd and that should keep the series going.

  16. I am a little disappointed..I wanted SC to be next..what was the point in mentioning Jill Pole in VDT and using the green smoke…which C.S. Lewis’ relative said was alluding to SC? I am annoyed…

    • It’s like when Sam talks about “my old Gaffer” in Lord of the Rings. Only book readers know who that is. Same goes for Jill Pole. Just because they mention her name is no reason to do SC next. That idea’s ridiculous. But then, so is doing MN…

      • It is not!!!!!! COme on , tell me that you weren’t think ‘They must be doing SC next’ when they said, ‘Eustace , ij

      • That idea isn’t ridiculous, it makes common sense! Tell me that you DIDN’T think ‘Oh SC must be what they are going to do next’ when the mentined ‘jill pole is here’!! Come on!!Get real. Think outside the box!!
        ( This is my opinion.No offense.Just putting a point.)

  17. Yes, thank you!!! I agree! I thought the point was that they were doing SC next! It really made me excited, but now I don’t no how to explain my feelings.

    • i’m agree with you!!!! we are not in position to claim what movie will be next, we should be happy they are considering doing another movie, I personally will always be happy to see they stil making the movies, I don’t care what book will be next as long as not earing they considering to do the last batle and still missing books to do!!!!

  18. Whats the big idea of making MN first? If the idea of making movie is to get people who watch, why dont the ones who watch and care a lot, like the ones who visit this site, cant help deciding this? If anyone who read this have a possibility to talk to important people, please tell then we want to be heard!!!!

  19. Yay…narnia 4!
But I really wanted SC next… maybe he just wasn’t in a room with the right people 🙂

  20. What was the point of adding in all that “green mist” phooey if the plot wasn’t going to lead in to the story of the Lady of the Green Kirtle??

And, if I remember correctly, SC is a few months after VDT, while LB is a few YEARS after SC. Which means that Eustace needs to look still pretty young in SC, but he can age more for LB….. does ANYONE ELSE see the logic?

I guess I can’t complain too much… at least the franchise is continuing. And if it brings more people the joy of the Narnia series, then… *sigh* I guess the order doesn’t matter. As much. Further up, further in!

  21. Hey everybody let’s at least be happy that this doesn’t say the Narnia films are over and done with! I did want SC next, but at least it’s still Narnia! To Narnia and the North!

  22. I believe that MN is the right move. It has the right kind of appeal to bring in new fans for the series that SC would lack. Not that SC won’t make a good movie, but it is one that existing Narnia fans will enjoy more than the average movie goer that just happens to go see it. I believe our fan base needs to grow if we want to see all seven. If SC was made next, I could see it being the end of Narnia adaptations.

    • I tend to be an optimist and don’t think I’ve ever once said any bad word about the prospect of sequels, however in this I do agree. With SC kind of being a small end to the main story (aside from LB, I know) it would be ever so easy to just end it then and there if the ticket sales weren’t big enough, and whose to say that they wouldn’t be worse than VDT?
MN gives them something new to work towards, a new angle, a new land, new characters (generally), a spotlight on their seemingly favorite character (Tilda Swinton), AND nothing to compare it to. All the Narnia movies so far have been made before. This one hasn’t – quite a bonus :P.
Ah well. Any Narnia movie is better than no Narnia movie! =)!

  23. If I was to be the decision maker, I would say that ALL the movies should be made. Hey! Harry Potter can make it; why not Narnia?

  24. I do love MN a TON, and REALLY wanted it to be the one after SC, but I was looking SO SO SO forward to SC that I was slightly sad…
However, after the initial reaction wore off, I am excited they are going to continue Narnia, and MN is a GREAT story. Almost a reset button for them, as well. They can advertise it as completely different in both style and story and hopefully gain quite a few new peeps.
So, despite how little it matters, I support them in this decision. As long as they make SC (I don’t care when) let them do whatever order they wish =D!

  25. This is amazing news! The Magician’s Nephew was on of my favorite. And I don’t understand why people are getting mad that The Silver Chair isn’t next. At this rate they’re going to make all of the movies. So Eustace will be back with Jill. Plus the actors still look young, years pass by in the real world so that when they go back to Narnia they can just make it that two years passed by instead of one.

    But this is very exciting!

  26. Hooray, the Magician’s Nephew!

I’m also very much looking forward to A Horse and His Boy.

It doesn’t really matter which order the movies are made in. I’ll watch them all on DVD, in whatever order I like. As long as they’re made.

  28. Yes! My only problem is that if Eustace gets too old but he is older in SC. I also can’t wait for HBB. But I am so glad that they are making MN instead of SC because I find it much more entertaining. Besides they can make Will look younger with make up if they get to SC which I hope they do

  29. VDT ‘only” made 100 million in US because it wasn’t marketed properly here. see how well it did in japan with proper marketing. this series will o great to the end if they treat the usa properly. merchandise!!!!! advertise!!!

  30. Hehehe! SUPER EXCITED!!! I really think that the VOTD was my favorite so now I’m content with whatever else they make. Truthfully, I think the are both tied in my favoritism.

But I really hope if they do the SC, that the old White Which won’t be playing the role of the Green Lady. I mean, you want someone who is really good with a musical laugh and stuff!!!

And to other ppls comments about trying out for the character of Jill, I wish you good fortune! However, consider yourself extremely fortunate b/c I have black hair and I can hardly get my tongue to do the British Accent when my friends and I are fooling around. So be thankful if you even get to try out. 🙂 Cause other ppl would b DYING to b there and do that. 🙂

  31. Hey Fox! Why not make BOTH The Silver Chair and The Magician’s Nephew at the same time (a la The Lord Of The Rings) and just release them seperately?!?!!? It would certainly make us Narnia fans happy! 🙂

  32. SO EXCITING!!! I’m not too disappointed with MN being first, it keeps Tilda in and still gives Will poulter a chance at coming back(being too old isn’t a problem, it wouldn’t change the book at all). Will would be 3 years too old for SC, but if they amde the last battle three years from that it would make him 6 years older than in VDT, which is in line with the books.

  33. I think Apted was a fine directer, especially in that he really got the children to ACT. Too often in the other two movies the kids just stood there all in a row saying their lines. Not a good reflection on the director and it didn’t give the children the opportunity to act. Apted did exactly the opposite. He got some emotion out of the kids and made the movie flow with action, just like the book.
I am so tired of people saying PC was a flop. I watch that movie over and over again still. The tension between the characters was brilliant and magnified the story. I loved the castle invasion. There were parts I didn’t care for but they didn’t outweigh what I did like.

    • honestly, I don’t think the same way. I feel andrew adamson got those children to act excellently well. People say the final scenes of vdt moved them but i don’t think it was as moving as the goodbye scene in prince caspian. Honestly, i doubt if micheal apted read the book before directing and if he did, i doubt if he read it well. Andrew adamson on the other hand was involved in the writing of the screenplay and although changes were made, the overall theme of the book was never compromised.
Something i really felt bad about in vdt the movie was dat the story made it seem like the children saved the day which really shouldn’t be the case. in the first two movies, andrew adamson understood the fact that without aslan, the pevensies would loose whatever battles they were fighting.
I was really disappointed with the design of the magician’s garden in vdt. It looked so childish and unrealistic. it looked like it was taken out of Alice in wonderland.
Aslan’s table was okay. i would have loved it more if it had more plants and carvings or statues.
The disagreement at deathwater pool was so quick that it really did not make sense to me.
the special effects were okay except for the green mist in the lone islands, it looked so unreal. The dragon wasn’t wonderful either. Ramandu’s daughter was a neat effect but it wasn’t realistic either. She is partly human and she would be getting married to a human being. it would be nicer if she had her natural skin colour with a faint glow on it. The way i envisioned ramandu’s daughter appearing to the crew was that she would descend in a ball of white light, while approaching the earth, the ball of light deforms into the shape of the woman and then the glow reduces to a faint glow. her dress should be made out of the colours of the rainbow. when she is about to take to the skies, the colours merge to give a bright white light and then she rises into the clouds as a meteor.
If i had my way, i would want the voyage of the dawn treader remade.

I WANT ANDREW ADAMSON BACK.I DON’T WANT MICHEAL APTED FOR ANY NARNIA MOVIE AGAIN.

      i guess i’ve said too much.lol

  34. I almost think it’d be a bad thing to do The Magician’s Nephew before SC because once it is done they’ll have to do SC which is on the “darker” side in a way and HHB kinda has the battle thing going on like PC too so if they think they lost audiences with the deemd “un-magical” and “darker” Prince Caspian (which I dsagree with, PC is my favorite so far)then I think they should spread out the more magic filled movies/books with the more political/battle ones like LWW PC VDT SC MN HHB LB. I always thought MN would be best if it was made right before the Last Battle though because it explains the whole existence of Narnia and kinda gets audiences even more attached to Narnia before the very end in The Last Battle. But by the way things sound Walden and Fox are hooked on wanting to do all 7 books so I am really excited for that!!! I just hope that the series will continue fully and won’t “die” like they said they thought it did just because every movie doesn’t become a huge block buster like LWW did. So either way I am VERY excited for the 4th Narnia movie as I have been for the past 3 no matter which one they decide to make. Just looking forward to Narnia 4!!!

    • -I also think it would be Great if Will, Anna, Skandar, and Georgie returned for the Horse and His boy since they’d most likely be around a right age for their character’s adult versions.

  35. Why Magician’s Nephew? I was under the impression they were making the films in the order the books were written. Oh well….

  36. I’m a little disappointed with them not going for Silver Chair next since it is the next one in publication order, but they have the upper hand decision for it, so I’m not going to whine. At least they are going to make the rest most likely. The only part that is going to make me feel icky is that at the end of VDT Eustace’s mom calls him down saying Jill Pole was over. So that was kind of like a cliffhanger or hint that SC will be made next. In the end they would go for MN next according to this report.

  37. I prefer MN, but I’m sure that A LOT, I repeat, A LOT of persons are tired of Tilda Swinton. She is PERFECT playing her role, but she will appear IN 4 CONSECUTIVE FILMS!
They should totally wait. I know SC is not the best, but Will Poulter is going to be an adult very soon. Tilda Swinton is already an adult, some more years won’t affect her, or at least, not a lot.

They were making the film in the publication order and now they are changing that. I’m so angry.

I’m happy because they are going to make more films but… this is wrong :/

  38. Both are fine with me, but I would prefer The Silver Chair next. But The Magician’s Nephew has so much more potential and can make much more money. All the LWW fans who saw it will see a better connection to it and I have a feeling if they make MN next in the ways they have been making previous films maybe with a little better quality like the first one it will be the 2nd highest grossing Narnia movie because of the deep connections. If Fox targets Christian audiences with the Creation theme in it like they targeted Christian audiences with LWW and the sacrifice theme they will make a ton of money off of it and will be able to continue the series.

  39. So is this still strong hints that another movie or is it for sure green lighted for the next movie (regardless of which one it is…) I’m simply ecstatic to see the series continue on.

  40. But won’t the dude who played Eustace get too old to play the part if they skip over the movies he’s supposed to be in?

  41. Good they’re making Magician’s Nephew for the first time. I just want the series to continue and let’s hope they make a great movie so we will get The Silver Chair.

Let the “Neevil” come forth! 🙂

  42. *sigh* The moviemakers need to read this site.

You know one thing I always thought was perfectly logical that C.S. Lewis did with the Narnia books was how in Dawn Treader he introduced Eustace and had him all through that book and so then when Ed and Lucy were told they couldn’t come back to Narnia that still left one character that you knew something about for the next book. Unfortunately the moviemakers don’t seem to realize this might be a good idea to do. Especially since the epic-fail of Prince Caspian is still in the back of people’s minds.

Yes, I am being rather negative aren’t I? Well I will say this: It isn’t offical yet, is it? Things could change, right? And if they don’t (though in all respects it’d make more sense if they did Silver Chair next) well be happy they didn’t drop the ball back at Prince Caspian.

Hey wait a minute, why are we rooting for a giant snake to “come out” from underground next anyway? It might “take over” Narnia! (that was a joke, anyone, anyone? No? haha. just kidding. xD)

  43. Making MN next is a decision made out of desperation to keep the series alive. It is not a creative decision.

    • You’re quite right, gP. And to be honest, that’s practically all the franchise is. It’s a money-maker. They don’t care about the fans, only the money they can get from us.

      • I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: no film maker ever sets out to make junk. No one gets up out of bed for 3 years, working on the same project, and says “In 3 years, I’m going to be creating a movie just to make money.”

I know plenty of people that really loved the movie, and I include myself in that.

        • Well, I think it is not creative to call it “not creative”…you are not being creative enough to look at it from their view. We have no idea what is going on with them. AND! It is SUPER creative! No one has EVER made MN into a film, unlike LWW, PC and VDT which were already made by BBC. So this is even MORE creative than the first 3! Go Narnia and GO MAGICIAN”S NEPHEW!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Oh…and the HAVE to care SOME! Doug Gresham is involved! I would love to hear what he has to say. I admire Doug Gresham allot. He is an amazing man!

    • Of course it is a business decision. It’s show business. However, remember that all of the creative team has mentioned time and time again that they really love The Magician’s Nephew. This is something where they can make a movie that they’ve been looking forward to making for some time. For some of them, it’s the reason they started doing the Narnia movies to begin with.

I wouldn’t call it desperation. Too strong a word. I would say that it’s a business decision with the potential to safeguard the rest of the series.

      • Yeah, they love TMN so much that they went against fan’s wishes to make it. My point is made.

        • No, they went against a majority of fan’s wishes. Where I come from, 75% isn’t the same as 100%. There were 25% that wanted Magician’s Nephew.

          • Oh, go ahead and nitpick my word choice. Maybe I’ll stop making critical comments or comments that actually reflect my opinion, since that’s apparently what you want. See ya…

          • It wasn’t a nitpick over word choice. I clearly was pointing out the simple facts that there ARE people that wanted Magician’s Nephew next. Your opinion comments are fine, I just wanted to remind you that there are people that do want something that we don’t. Personally, I wish that they were doing Silver Chair next.

          • Its about time they listened to the monority!:)

          • Atleast this means that The magician’s Nephew wil be made. If they did SC and it didn’t do well they might drop the series before they ever do one of the best books.

    • I matters very little what is made next. Just like the books themselves, a person can choose to view movies in any order they like!

    • Exactly. The only reason that the Magician’s nephew is more popular is because It’t the first book of the series!! After both films are made, I bet the Silver chair will be more popular.

  44. And you know what? even though I didn’t like what they did, making Magicians Nephew next instead of The Silver Chair (Poor Will Poulter), I think it’s nice though, because they will end the “Pevensie Trilogy” you know what I mean? they will end it with Magicians Nephew to know the Prequel of LWW. But it’s really really sad, I want to see the Silver Chair next. =( It’s my second favorite book in the series. But I really really hope that they will realize that they need to MAKE SILVER CHAIR next. =(

  45. That’s not right. The Magician’s Nephew was supposed to be the 6th movie of Narnia. The Silver Chair supposed to be the next Narnia Movie. Because it is the 4th book been published.

  46. WAHHHHH!!!!!! WAHHH!!! I WANT THEM TO DO THE SILVER CHAIR!!!!! (okay, enough sobbing) But i am disappointed. the silver chair is one of my favorites.

    • Don’t feel bad Emily. I don’t like it ethir, but it just will have to wait. ( I love SC, but I think that this might be a good and a bad move…for more info read my older comments)

  47. I think they are going to set up the Queen of the Underworld from the Silver Chair in the Magicians nephew. Makes sense if they do this. It will drive plot more. What they should do is have MNcome out at Christmas and then SC come out in summer. The every other year is killing the draw. That was why Lord of the rings was so effective. Keep your audience and keep media attention. You have a different cast for silver chair. Film it at the same time! No brainer.

      • @ Jeff, please don’t suggest that the lady of green kirtle should be set up in magician’s nephew. That would be reallyyyyyy wrong bcos the lady of the green kirtle came to narnia 1400 years later after the reign of the white witch who is the villian in magician’s nephew. Please do not say that lest Micheal Apted accidentally hears of it and decides to add that to the movies.
BTW, nice way of linking the movies, really creative but that would be way out of line when it comes to narnia.

    • But the thing is, they need to film the rest of them in order, or else everyone who hasn’t read the books is going to get all mixed up and they might not even film the rest!!! Since ypu were refferring to the Lord of the rings, i think that you should consider that they make the prequel movie ( the hobbit) AFTER the rest. That will be very effective.

  48. I have seen VDT 16 times and have the ticket stubs to prove it. I knew from the beginning that VDT was going to have trouble. It is a very good movie but poor adaptation of the book. Some parts of the movie still make me cringe, but I did my part to keep the series going. SC is a very character driven story. I am looking forward to seeing the interplay between Eustace and Jill. MN is one of my least favorite books; I have a hard time getting through it. I think that Walden needs to completely change its marketing direction. The religious community did not respond to VDT. Many of them appear to want to judge but not reach into their pockets. I have reached into my pocket for VDT and will do so for SC but not MN. We fans want SC.

    • That is not true! A lot of Christians went to see and raved about it. More than they did with Prince Caspain!

  49. WOW,16 times!! Are you kinding???
I only saw it once and that was in 3D.
Well, there sure are alot of upset Narnia Fans out there!
( Please try looking at it in a good way!

      • Yeah…Like go walk in their shoes for a while and try doing all the hard work they are…OR just sit back and relax!

        • If I could get involved in these films, I would. I’d literally drop everything for it. But it isn’t possible – yet. Don’t tell me about their hard work. I know all about it.

          • LOL! Me too… maybe we can do something some day. Sooo, are you involved in the film industry?

          • I wish… I may get involved in it someday. I do a lot of video stuff on my own and enjoy it immensely. But Narnia would be a dream… maybe it’ll get rebooted in twenty years.

  50. Guys, look at my point of view and answer me: Do you think that Walden wants to terminate the franchise of Narnia putting the magician’s nephew as the next movie? I think so, so vote in The Silver Chair!

      • No, he’s saying they want to stop making the films (not the same thing). And he’s got a great point. Listen to the NarniaWeb podcast and you’ll understand where we’re coming from.

  51. YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!! This is the one that I wanted to see next!!!!!!!!! I voted for it on the polls. So, does this confirm that they are going to continue the series?

How much does this have to do with the fact that Perry left funding for MN?

    I was just in Nashville!

I wish there was some way for me to take part in this movie…I would do just about anything!

    • well said, well said. Most people who have posted on this article seem like self centered beings. why cant they do MN next? Just cause its not ur faveorite book? I dont mind which one the choose to do nex as long as they keep doing it.

      • Indeed! I can understand a little dissapointment…but don’t act like the world is ending LOL!
Look at it this way…no one has EVER made MN! This will be the first time to “see” it! We had already seen LWW,PC and VDT from BBC…but never MN! 🙂

      • Thank you for adding yet another insult to injury. I appreciate it. The reason I don’t want MN next has nothing to do with the book in particular. SC is my least favorite, in fact. But Will Poulter will be in his twenties by the time they get to SC. Don’t talk to me about Ben Barnes; Caspian was supposed to be Peter’s age, and he was. SC takes place only months after VDT, and you want a twenty-year-old playing a twelve/thirteen-year-old? Please! There are reasons I don’t appreciate the filmmakers choices. Don’t be rude if you don’t agree with “most of the people who have posted on this article”.

Funny thing, we took a poll, and “most of the people” voted for SC. The filmmakers, who ASKED us which next, ignored us and decided “we’ll do whatever the heck we want.”

        • While I agree with your sentiment about the age of Poulter, I also need to point out that the filmmakers didn’t ask us directly. We took it upon ourselves when Mark Johnson said in an interview “maybe we should put it to the fans.” This was prior to the release of Dawn Treader. Dawn Treader wound up being successful over time, even quadrupling its’ opening weekend take in a crowded month during a recession.

However, the box office take was enough that other decisions were made. Sadly, I agree with them that I would rather see a new book adapted for the first time ever, and hopefully have that bring about more. But yeah, it really sucks that Poulter can’t be frozen in carbonite until they’re ready to do Silver Chair.

One other thing to point out, as an FYI: Will Poulter grew about six or seven inches after they finished filming Dawn Treader. And when I saw him again in December, I think he must have grown another few inches in height. He still looks the same, and probably will for a few years. His voice has deepened a bit since filming too, though, and they couldn’t do any voice over work with him later on.

        • Whoa…calm down Arvan. I really was not being mean to any body. 🙂 And, though I don’t know how long it will be for now, I do live in a free country where I can express my own thougts. And you can yours too! Please! Express yours! But…let’s act mature about it and not freak out because someone does not agree with you.
And if you are so mad at the film makers…good grief! Don’t watch the movies and just move on with life.
I hope that we can discuss things in a mature and Christian manner without taking it personally. 🙂
May God bless you and I hope you will not be too sad if they do do MN next. Let’s just do our part. 😉
          Anna

        • but think of it this way if they did sc next they would have to do mn then hb before they could do lb witch would leave a 5 or 6 year gap from sc to lb. will would age alot more than if they did mn then sc then hb then lb. the filmmakers know what they are doing.like i said they r probly going 2 make them in this order mn,sc,hb,lb

  52. Good job Anna Pendleton! Your actually being thankful for what we’ve got! A new Narnia Movie? Thank goodness. The Magicians Nephew? Sure why not,at least (a) movie is coming to theaters!!!! Your comment was like a breath of fresh air! Are these negative comments from Narnia fans or…Harry Potter fans? I would be seriously thinking about what you say fellow fans of Aslan.

Thankful fans of Narnia and the North,
    I solute YOU!

    • I’ll have you know that I love Narnia more than any other series. More than LOTR, more than HP. More than Star Wars. Just because we don’t like a Narnia movie doesn’t mean we’re not Narnia fans. In fact, we probably didn’t like it BECAUSE of our fandom. I thought VDT such a sorry excuse for an adaptation that I wouldn’t be very sorry if they dropped the franchise. That is not how I felt when Disney dropped Narnia. I felt almost sick back then. Now I feel sick as I read comments like yours. It’s a sad day when our love of Narnia is questioned. I hope you like whatever they do to the next movie. But of course you will. You don’t care what they do, as long as teh movie says “NARNIA” on it.

      • Well Arvan, I’m sorry if I came off angry! I love Narnia (the books!) More than any other series. I didn’t like Prince Caspian one bit (I kind of wish they hadn’t made it.) but the VDT was a definently a step up in my opinion. Just because what I loved in the book itself was in the film! But I still wish they had gone with the book (a lot more)than they did. The dark island was one of my most favorite scenes in the book (and in the movie-they ruin the scene totally). The reason why I said what I said was because I tired of people being ungrateful for what they have. And I’m trying to be thankful like Aslan would want me to be.
Fellow Fans of the books and films,
        I solute You!!!!

        • If you have a candy bar and someone slaps you in the face, picks up you candy bar, and eats half of it, would you be grateful that they didn’t eat the whole thing? Or would you be angry with them?

          • Very true Paul…AND! Would you pick it up and let them eat the rest?

          • Like I said Arvan,I wasn’t satisfied with everything they did in VDT. And to your question, I probably would be pretty mad if they took my candy bar, I would leave and then come back when I had a better attitude. And forgive them even if they don’t opologize (but of course with God’s help). The Narnia series is my most favorite series of all time, but at same time I guess its only a story and doesn’t really matter in the wrong run. I am sorry that I was rude Arvan, I did made a mistake on how said what I said.

            God bless!
Sincerely a fellow friend of Narnia

          • @Paul, no I wouldn’t. I’m not a perfect Christian, and that’s something I simply have never been able to do. I also can’t “be perfect as my Father is perfect”. Here’s a question. Would you turn your other cheek?

@Anna, yes, because I’m a germophobe, and for no other reason.

          • Arvan: I would. The goal is to strive for perfection. Not to admit defeat and than become defeatist. That’s the pessimistic attitude that I’ve seen a lot of. I’m an optimist.

          • Arvan,
If you call yourself a Christian you will not have to be perfect…but don’t hide behind not being perfect. We fail enough without trying…let’s do our best NOT to try.
Would you tell Jesus that to His face? “Sorry Jesus, I am not perfect, so I just can’t do what you command me to.”
like Paul said…we are supposed to STRIVE for perfection…true, we won’t get there…but we can try to be as close to it as we can before we meet Christ. Remember we all have to stand before God one day. And He is watching all we do right now.
And about being a germophobe…I can understand that lol. I am not one, but I have seen some people who are. 😉

          • You guys are perfectly right, and as I said before, I’m not perfect and I’ve never turned the other cheek in my life. I’ve tried, and failed miserably. But that isn’t the original question. Would you be angry?

          • Well, we have to be honest here. 😉 I would love to say “Oh no!!! I would not be angry!” But the truth is my first reaction would probably be one of upsetness. But, I would like to think that I could get over it and get things into perspective. Why do you ask?

    • Thanks Narnias #1 fan (thouhg I may steal your name 😉 )

      Yes…why not another movie! 😉
Even if they did LB (though it would be kinda odd) But think of this…maybe they have their reasons…I mean, we are not there! We have no idea what is going on.
And what if this does have something to do with Perry Moore…I think it would be amazing for his dream to be fulfilled after he is gone.
I soute YOU for recognizing that things are not always just how we want…and that sometimes we don’t really know what we want. 🙂

  53. heeeyy everybody. lets all breathe. alrighty then. It is true that they killed PC and i really wanted to strangle peter for being such a butt head. And it is true that they messed up the order of VDT and added more stuff. But honestly the book VDT did not have enough action to just plop onto the screen. They would have never gotten enough money to make the next movie. and i am EXTREMELY UPSET that SC wont be next but having MN would be a good finisher for the “Pevensie” trilogy before people completely forget about the profesor. but i am still upset, but c’est la vie.

      • I agree with both of you. 😉
Yes…let’s just move on and look forward to each movie and not freak out!

AND! I don’t think that a movie NEEDS action…depending on the movie. Narnia kinda and kinda does not.

          • Really? Are you basing your information off of something statistical? Or…just what you think? Just curious…because if that was the case I would call up the production team etc and tell them!
I am sure they know what they are doing…don’t you think that if it was THAT obvious that MN=End of Narnia franchise the would NOT be making it?

          • MN=End of Narnia franchise as we know it. They may continue with a new actor for Eustace. Believe me, if they use Will Poulter in future films, I will laugh.

          • Well…why would you laugh? Ben was 30!!!! And I though he did pretty good.
PLUS! Will was like 17 when he played a 12 year old. I think they should continue using him.
Who would you rather them use?

          • It would be a great special effect having the pre & post Narnia footage of Will as he is now, for SC, & having him older when in a few years time the filming starts for SC.

I always thought it was cool in the books about becoming older/changed in skills n appearance when in Narnia and that hasn’t been explicitly stated in the series yet, more like hinted at (for example in PC when Edmund re-familiarizes himself with swordplay near the start -although currently probably only noticed by people reasonably fresh with the books).

Physically Eustace by FAR underwent the biggest change on his previous trip to Narnia, & it would be a cool special effect when the time comes, to go with finally getting this explanation explicitly into the series with an noticeably older Eustace in Narnia as compared to him at start & end of SC film back in our world.

          • Will Poulter was fifteen/sixteen, not seventeen. Ben Barnes? He was only twenty, not thirty! And he was supposed to be the same age as Peter. That’s why he was cast that old.

          • Okay…so 16 not 17…but he was supposed to be TWELVE…somewhere around there. That was my point.
And I am pretty sure that Ben was much older…thought he was at least in his later 20’s.

  54. Okay… I’m more than a little disappointed that they’re doing Magician’s Nephew instead of Silver Chair next. Though the main reason I want Silver Chair is because of Will Poulter. Both Magician’s Nephew and Silver Chair are at the bottom of my favorite Narnia books, but I honestly think that Magician’s Nephew will be so EPIC on the big screen. I’m getting goosebumps about it.

But yeah, I am disappointed that they aren’t doing the Silver Chair, if nothing else because if they do do it eventually, Will Poulter might look too old to be Eustace again. But I shall both cross my fingers and pray that eventually we may get ALL the books made into movies.

    • Woo hoo! That’s the spirit. 🙂
MN and SC are both on my favorite top 7 Narnia books. 😉 I really LOVE all of them so much…it is hard to put any of them on the bottom!

      • Yep! They do seem to have a way to make things work out. 😉

  55. I still wish they are thinking of making Silver Chair!!!
But at least their not making the Last Battle in the middle of the series! I hope the movie MN goes with book like LWW!
Please Fox and Walden do a good job were Disney failed!!

    • YES! I would love to see all the movies as accurate as LWW. I did not really understand how close to the book LWW was until I saw PC!
And I had the same thought about being glad that they did not make LB now. 😉

  56. I also feel it would be much better if the Silver Chair was the next movie. I love the book and I even enjoy the BBC Silver Chair movie. The Magicians Nephew can be made later because they will need new actors for that movie anyway. The Silver Chair needs to be next for Eustace to be the correct age. Also I can’t wait to see Puddleglum. The one good thing if they do make the Magicians Nephew next, is that it’s never been made into a movie before and we have the BBC Silver Chair to hold us over until the new movie is made.

  57. Whether or not Silver Chair will not be the next Narnia movie made, I am just happy that another Narnia movie from the book series is being made. The thing I hope for the most is all seven books from the series will be made. I have read all seven books. In what order the other four books (The Magician’s Nephew, The Horse and his Boy, Silver Chair, and Last Battle) are made into movies does not matter to me as long as they will be. I have always loved books being made into movies especially stories from God’s Word like the movies Joseph, One Night with the King, The Nativity Story, and The Prince of Egypt.

  58. I personally don’t mind the order that they’re made, just as long as they’re made. However I think they should make SC next. Souly because of Will Poulter. This kids an amazing actor, he stole VDT and if anyones seen him in Son of Ranbow they know what he’s capable of. The thing they just can’t do is introduce an actor in a certain role, then end up with a differnt actor in the same role for whatever reason. It’s unprofessional and honestly brings down the quality of the movie, it would for this especially because Will was acknowledged for his role. He’s the one known as Eustace now. If they cast a different boy in that role, it just wouldn’t work. I don’t think they can risk waiting. They have to make SC quickly before Will physically outgrows the role. They’re lucky enough that at 18 he still practically looks young enough for Eustace. Don’t push your luck and keep the books in order.

  59. Uh, I wanted MN to be the next movie as possible or cast SC and MN at the same time. The reason I want MN to come is not only since it’s my favorite. It’s also because I don’t want an old lady playing the white witch. And everyone is forgetting that they also made SC back then. And I love VDT, it had a great message and the way Eustace turned back to a human was awesome, and it doesn’t matter if Will Poulter still plays Eustace because in Harry Potter (I hate Harry Potter cause of the demonic stuff in it) they still use the same cast in some characters and the look so old for playing a kid’s part.
