Voyage of the Dawn Treader 3-D Blu-ray Now Available at Best Buy

It looks like Best Buy has gotten a jump on the competition and released the 3-D Blu-ray of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader today. You need a 3DTV and a Blu-ray 3D player (or a PS3 with the latest updates installed) to play the film in that format.

For those that don’t know: Blu-ray 3D is a standard that is separate from Blu-ray. It uses Blu-ray media, but takes different technology to read. Why only the PS3 was allowed to get a firmware upgrade that would make playing Blu-ray 3D discs possible is beyond me. It might just be, because Sony owns the Blu-ray format.

Either way, the Blu-ray 3D version of Dawn Treader is available to pick up in Best Buy stores starting today!

  1. Even though I do not have a 3D TV or anything, I just wonder how many people are willing to pay that much money to just upgrade a DVD just a little?

The 3D in the theater to me was pretty good, but it’s been only one of two 3D movies I’ve seen in theaters. I probably wouldn’t watch it in 3D again, though I’ll admit I liked how at the End of the World Aslan’s face seemed to come out of the screen while speaking his famous There I Have Another Name line. It felt like he was speaking to not just the Pevensies but to the audience. πŸ™‚

Well, I’ll keep coming and checking for Narnia news. πŸ™‚

    • Personally, I loved the 3D version. I just don’t love 3D enough to want to get a 3D TV.

That said, the jump from DVD to Blu-ray is vast enough to make an upgrade. If you have a calibrated HDTV (not factory settings, but calibrated with a THX setting that you can sometimes find on a Pixar release), looking at a Blu-ray version makes the DVD look fuzzy. It’s like the jump from VHS to DVD. It’s not as pronounced on older tvs, so for a while even I was skeptical. However, when I look at a Blu-ray version now, it makes me wonder if we can get much clearer than that. I used to feel that way about DVD, but now I’m slowly going through my DVDs and replacing them one by one with the Blu-ray versions.

I also loved that line in the film. It seems like it was set up to have Aslan looking out at the audience.

  3. Awesome, I’m getting a copy. I have a 3D TV – will be nice to see Narnia in the aquarium!

    • Get it at Walmart. $50 cheaper. And here’s an idea: Wait till Black Friday. I know it’s a bit of a ways off, but there will most likely be a huge sale on it. Just an idea.

  4. Great! We’re possibly going to buy a 3D TV, so this could be an opportunity to use the 3D glasses again! πŸ™‚
