Matthew Aldrich to Oversee Narnia for Netflix

Matthew Aldrich

Matthew Aldrich, co-writer of Disney and Pixar’s Coco, has been hired to oversee both live-action adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. According to the announcement, the plan is to create a set of films as well as at least one series.

Aldrich will serve as “creative architect” of all projects under the deal.

All series and films produced through the deal will be Netflix productions, with Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne) alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers for series and as producers for features.

  1. Hi Paul, I’ve always appreciated your website and I think it’s a shame there’s not more discussion here anymore. Ive been thinking about the Netflix Narnia recently and I’m almost sure I’ve got the Netflix timeline for Narnia figured out. I was curious to see what you think of my reasoning here. I think it will be:

    First Year:
    Silver Chair film.
    Series Season 1: Magicians Nephew

    Second Year:
Series Season 2: Lion Witch and Wardrobe

    Third Year:
Series Season 3: The Horse and His Boy
    Last Battle Film

    Fourth Year:
    Series Season 4: Prince Caspian

    Fifth Year:
Series Season 5: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

My reasoning? They have said they wish to make feature films and a series, and Douglas Gresham has said certain books would do better in an episodic series, such as the Magicians Nephew, particularly for episodes like the battle of Charn. Also, this way they could have all four of the books that were not adapted by Disney and Fox pumped out within the first three years, after just two films and three seasons, the ones that fans are most anxious to see and which Gresham is probably the most anxious to see finally get adapted (plus the classic LWW as a 2nd season in the year between feature length films). Then if people are hooked at the point that HHB wraps up and Last Battle is released, they can go on to do the final two seasons of the series, re-adapting PC and VDT. However, these last two are not as essential if they decide to can the series after the HHB season and LB movie. What do you think?

    • Yeah, I have a daughter now who takes up more of the free time that I used to use for fan sites like this. All of that to say, I don’t mind that at all. She’s worth it.

However, I do enjoy your list… but I also kind of have a feeling that The Last Battle would probably come in at the end of everything, and probably as a multi-part grand finale. At least that’s what I would do with it. Perhaps a series season covering the events.

      • Yeah that sounds like that could work too! It does seem Last Battle should be at the end. That’s awesome with your daughter! Also, I enjoy what you post on your website just as much today! I didn’t mean I only enjoyed coming here in the past, i still completely enjoy coming on to this website. I just meant to say that I wish other fans would comment and participate on articles like this as they come out. Thanks so much for replying and God bless you! 🙂
