" Yeah, I love it," she told him, giving it to him to put it on her " Oh, I got a car so I don't have to take the bus any more but I can't drive it until this whole thing is over," she told him, with a sigh.

"Not really," Jen admitted, and opened her locker. "I couldn't fall asleep, so I just listened to my iPod until three or something. You?"

"I passed out soon after I got home. Hey do you think I could ask you something a bit personal?" Brendan nervously glanced around.

"Thanks for believing me," said Alipang to Summer. "You'll find out only too soon why I asked you that question. See you around." He wanted to give her a brotherly hug, but he did not. His restraint was not because he thought hugging his friend would make the radiant Kim jealous--that idea was absurd beyond belief; it was because he didn't want to make Summer a target by appearing especially fond of her.

The whole school, indoors and out, looked different to Alipang this morning. The two gangsters or wanna-be's who had laid for him last night might OR might not be among the students around him. If among these, they could be ANY two males in the crowd. He couldn't even be sure of the race of his would-be attackers.

He had gotten the best of them last night; but he could not forget what Master Pitik Imada was fond of saying: "The attacker owns the time." Since they had gotten away clean--since he had not had the ruthlessness to knife them from behind without warning--the punks were still on the offensive, still free to try again. And cowards that they were, they would do their trying with reinforcements.

I have Brendan on my side now--and Sammy Ashford, as far as he's able to help. Will there be more to side with me? Dear Lord, I'm thinking as if I were starting my own gang! That isn't what I want. But I don't want to be killed or crippled either.

"I passed out soon after I got home. Hey do you think I could ask you something a bit personal?" Brendan nervously glanced around.

"Yeah, sure," Jen said, slinging her backpack smoothly from her shoulder. She began putting books in her locker.

Summer walked up to the school. She coughed lightly then entered the building. Walking to her locker she fumbled with the lock. She never was good at these kinds of things.

Alina arrived at shcool. The air was fresh, the groundspeople had kept th lawn green. Both were a plus about the shcool. However, the people looked a little less at ease than usual.
Some kid in front of her muttered something about "assimbly" to his buddy. Ok, that must mean the gym right? She followed the grouping of kids in front of her.

"Yeah, sure," Jen said, slinging her backpack smoothly from her shoulder. She began putting books in her locker.

"Um yeah". Brendan was really nervous. "Well I just was just wondering, I mean if you don't want to, thats fine. But if you do, thats good, I mean great but yeah." Brendan, thought to himself, out with it man! Brendan sighed, and got a grip. "Jen, I was wondering, if wasn't too much trouble, if you'd like to go out with me?"

Jen blushed and looked up at Brendan. "I'd really like to, actually...."

Class time had not even begun yet, and there was a P.A. announcement from Vice-Principal Fred Warner:

"Attention all students! For the first period, there will be an assembly in the auditorium. Yesterday there was a locker theft, which is still being investigated; but since then, a more serious incident has occurred affecting one of our minority students. This will be addressed by the Principal. You will proceed to the auditorium."

Jen turned her head up. "That would be my locker theft." she sighed.

Summer finally got her locker open, grabbed her stuff then walked quickly to the auditorium. She took a seat in the back of the auditorium and waited playing with her necklace as she sat there.
