In between kissing Chilena, Alipang explained:

"This is one time I would have been _happy_ to have been mistaken about something. But I was dead-on right about Rocknose: turning the other cheek to him did _nothing_ but give him a taste of blood so he wanted more."

Their mother interjected at this point, "Al, I hope this doesn't mean you see NO value in the Lord's words on that subject."

"Don't worry, Mom, you taught me too well for me to diss the Lord. But He wasn't talking about every possible situation in that one phrase; life is more complicated than one Bible verse can cover, and the Living Word would know that if anyone does." Turning back to Chilena and kissing her again, he continued:

"Rocknose and some other punks got together, including that young twerp Carlos who harassed Summer the other day. They made me think that it was just two of them at first, and that they had grabbed Sammy Ashford. Sammy's become a good friend to me; I _couldn't_ abandon him. Well, Sammy _wasn't_ there in the park after all, but there _were_ more punks there than I could handle by myself, so I hauled butt out of there. I couldn't run fast enough to shake them; but thank God, Brendan came up just then, and he had his lacrosse stick.

"Together we were able to deal with them; Brendan did most of the work, but I did what I could. When it was over, Grant led the cops to the spot, and soon I had my ambulance ride with the firefighters."

" Oh, wow is he all right?," she asked, climbing into his bed to gentlely sunggle up to her brother " I'm glad you all right I was really worried about because you didn't call me once before you went to work," she told him.

Alipang held Chilena cheek to cheek with himself, cuddled up as closely as the setting permitted, while at the same time bringing Mom in from the other side to make it a group hug. To both of his dearly-loved ones he said:

"Brendan was hardly even touched; it helped him that he had his lacrosse stick. Anyway, the situation with those punks came on too fast for me to call anyone. If Sammy had been captured like they made me think, seconds could have counted for him, so I couldn't wait for anything." The word "wait" reminded him of something else; drawing Chilena up still closer against his side, he said to her, "Sweets, will you please do what you can to help Kim fit in smoothly at Pansit Paradise? I won't be able to be at work to help her for awhile--if she does need any help; I don't know if she will or not."

She kissed him on the cheek " I'll do anything for my brother," she told him, gentlely laying her head on his chest " I love so most Al I don't like seeing you like this," she told him.

"So close your eyes for a moment, sweets, and you _won't_ see me like this," replied Alipang, kissing her hair. "Just relax like you are now, you aren't hurting my rib any, and I'll talk to Mom a bit."

He cradled Chilena tenderly, both of them comforting each other by simple nearness, while he and Mom spoke about practicalities, like how soon he would be released and how long he would miss classes.

They stayed that way for as long as they could get away with. After several minutes, Alipang gently rocked Chilena side to side, kissed her lightly on the lips and more firmly on the forehead, then said, "The doctor will be in any minute, sweets. You need to get up now, or they'll charge us for two patients. Though they should be _paying_ you for helping me feel better."

" All right well be all right if I come back after school?," she asked, looking up at him now.

OOC: this is what Chilena looks like

"Hopefully, he'll already be home when you return from school," said Mrs. Havens.

"Either way, you can see me," said Alipang with a smile. "But you have my permission to check up on Dan too!"

====================

OOC: Okay, I guess Chilena _isn't_ Filipina by blood! That's okay, nothing in the story really depended on her being Asian, though I had gotten the impression that she was. I remember now how I got that impression: early on, we had discussed the possibility of Chilena being related to the Imadas.

" Oh, I won't for get about him Al," she told him, kissing him before she got off the bed " I'll see you after school Ok," she told him, pulling her bag on her left soulder.

While Mom was seeing about having the doctor come in to discuss his discharge, Alipang relaxed and enjoyed the raw, pure fact of being cared about by family. His sister, he realized, made him feel good because she not only loved him, she also respected him. She didn't feel a need to outshine him, to defeat him, to shame him, to tower high above him. Yes....an affirming _attitude_ like that in a girl was the thing to be prized, far more than external physical beauty. If he could ever win that regard from a suitable girl who _hadn't_ been raised as his sister, he would cherish her with all his heart.

Not that he was in any hurry about girls. Kim had struck his heart like a tsunami, for he could not be _indifferent_ to such fabulous beauty as hers; but there was nothing to be hoped for from that direction, and he would not go stumbling over his feet scrambling to seek some other girl's favor. No, he would continue for now as he had been: working, bettering himself, climbing the ladder to full manhood.

Chilena was in her car going to school she was glad her brother was all right now. Before she went to school she went to starbucks to get her something to eat " Man I need to remember to eat in the morings," she told herself, pulling out the parking lot .

An off-duty policeman, one of the two who had responded to Brendan's call and taken the punks into custody, recognized Chilena and asked her how her brother was doing.

Summer woke up feeling sore. Her neck was slightly swollen and she had multiple bruises. She sighed and got dressed being careful not to drag her clothes over her neck. She left the house feeling slightly better but still not in a great mood.

OOC: Summer has not heard about what happened to Alipang.

One of the first acquaintances Summer met was the school gossip, Ivy, who sadly assured her that Alipang, Brendan, Mr. Kramer, and Grant the church guitarist had been in a gunfight with forty gang members from Shilohsville, and that Alipang had been killed, falling upon a heap of slain foes.

ooc: im guessing we've already moved on to the next day?

ic: Dan had fallen asleep late last night due to his illness. He was sleeping in his room, and his mother had already called the school to inform them of Dan's absence. (Around two he's going to have a doctor come and check on him). Since his mother had to go to work, his father is staying with him instead.

Jen is getting up and preparing for school at the moment.
