"We must be nearing the end of the trail. We should be in Archenland soon. And Anvard will be quite near."

Hearing that the worst was over gave Gripstone renewed energy. He still could not run, but he walked more steadily and surely. This in turn gave Ninecatcher more peace of mind, and she also moved with more confidence. Before long, the mountains were giving way to foothills, and the breeze carried to the three Tigers the scents of human habitation.

Orestes the elder Faun paused and addressed Longtail: "Before we actually pass onto farmland, perhaps you should see if you can catch some meat which isn't intelligent AND doesn't belong to any humans."

"This raises the question of long-term sustenance in a human-dominated land," said Laertes the younger Faun. "How _will_ any large talking carnivore get food regularly that _isn't_ some Child of Adam's livestock?"

"There are humans down in Limtal," Gripstone told him. "Although we Tigers down there have plenty of land reserved for our hunting, sometimes we barter with our human neighbors, trading some form of labor for some ready-butchered meat."

In the meantime, Longtail has come across what appears to be a deer trail. He is slowly going along it now.

NPC Archenlander

From ahead of Longtail comes a sound: wheeeeeee-CHUK, thud.

The deer Longtail was hunting has just been shot by a human archer. As soon as the huntsman sees a stirring from Longtail's direction, he calls out: "Narnian beast? If so, speak, and I will yield you this kill!"

NPC Archenlander

"My name is Felstan; I own a lodge near here. The way you answered--are you one of the Limtal Tigers? Word about them and their mission is spreading."

NPC Felstan

"Talking carnivores are a relief. Since the White Witch cast her winter curse on Narnia, my brothers and I have been forced to kill more than a dozen non-intelligent predators coming out of Narnia in search of food, including bears who of course were unprepared to hibernate in a winter so far off schedule. Poor things, they were starving; but it was them or us."

Felstan

"No Narnian humans have crossed my own land since very soon after the Witch invaded; but other kinds come by from time to time, especially smaller types like talking rabbits. My brothers and I help them out as we can; in fact, I now employ some talking squirrels full time to care for my own small apple orchard. I do hear of Narnian humans finding refuge here in Archenland, and welcome they are; they just don't come in this particular way."

"At this moment, we tigers are bring two boys, both knowledgeable in the tanning trade, through into Archenland. My friends were hurt in a battle but they are a good deal better now. They lost a good deal of humans in that battle and its aftermath though."

Felstan's face grew thoughtful. "The Witch has much to answer for; and in Aslan's time, she _will_ answer for it. But you say that the boys with you can work with hides? This can only be the providence of the Emperor-Over-Sea!

"Listen: southwest of here, in Anvard, there is a tanner of leather, named Vandrick, a decent and honest man. He and his wife have only one son, and they might very well be interested in taking on apprentices to enlarge their output. With the need to defend against possible attack from Jadis, our King is forced to increase his standing army, and an army needs many items of leather. Go ahead and feed yourself and the other tigers; then have the rest of your party come down to my lodge." He pointed the direction.

"It would be our pleasure. Thank you, kind sir." With that, Longtail brought the deer back to the trail to meet up with the rest of the group.

"We could just faintly hear that you were speaking with someone," said Ninecatcher. "An Archenlander, I presume?"

"Yes, he gave me this deer. He also says that we should go down to his lodge. He knows someone who can give the boys a job here."

Ninecatcher and Gripstone were quick to devour their share of the venison--not only because they were hungry, but because they knew that the humans and fauns were being kept waiting to get human-type food at Felstan's residence.

Mathan hoisted Laertes onto his shoulders; the young faun had had a rough time of it crossing the mountains while his maimed hand was still healing, and on this easier ground it became possible to give him a ride. "Let's go," said the boy. "I look forward to finding a way to earn my living."
