Aslan’s Country interviews Ernie Malik (Part 2)

Aslan’s Country has posted the second part of their interview series with Dawn Treader publicist Ernie Malik. In it, he provides some very interesting answers to some good questions.

Here’s a quick excerpt from that interview:

Cy: Shall Dawn Treader have a video game based off of it?

Ernie: That’s a studio marketing question I cannot answer.

Cy: There is still doubt about the December 10, 2010 release date for Dawn Treader, due to all the recent delays- and comebacks- the release date hasn’t been changed, has it?

Ernie: The film’s release date remains 12/10/10.

Cy: Is filming with the cast totally completed?

Ernie: Yes…Ben Barnes was the last key cast member working on Nov. 27.

Cy: There have been many, many rumors on whether Trumpkin and Dr. Cornelius shall appear in the Dawn Treader. Shall they?

Ernie: You’ll have to wait for the movie to see for yourself.

Read the rest on Aslan’s Country

And that was very quickly followed up by the final installment of two questions:

Cy: Will William Moseley and Anna Popplewell have any role in Dawn Treader?

Ernie: Another rumor? They do not appear in the book.

Cy: Will all of the islands described in the Dawn Treader book be included in the movie?

Ernie: We consolidated seven islands into five.

But further inquiry into which islands were consolidated went unanswered. However, the loss of two islands is fine with me. That way, it won’t feel as rushed going from island to island and we can have more screentime with each of the included islands.

  1. Wow! I CAN’T WAIT till the release of VTD! This interview has piqued my curiosity about the changes in the movie even more than before. 😀

What an interesting answer to the question about the brief plot summary (on Aslan’s Country). What sort of fate are they saving the country from, I wonder? And how is the journey bewitching? The speculations about the Green Witch that took place a few months ago come to my mind. I sincerely hope that this is speculation only — not fact. In my opinion, a change like that would only be for the worse.

Oh well, I guess only time will tell. With Douglas Gresham having a large say, I doubt that the changes will be too drastic. In any case, the movie is less than a year away. YIPPE!!! 🙂

  2. Battle Maiden,

In part 1 of the interview Malik said the The Lady of the Green Kirtle will NOT be in Dawn Treader. The plot summary is the official summary which was published before filming began. Some fans have concluded this has something to do with the slavery theme in the book.

  3. Interesting! The island consolidation doesn’t worry me, it intrigues me… in any case THAT’S the kind of plot liberty I’m not troubled with. I was very pessimistic about the whole thing a few days back, but now am eagerly waiting to see it (like we all are!)…

  4. I don’t mind the combining of Islands as long as they aren’t cutting out the Dark Island. That is a major scene in the book with Aslan leading them out.

    • That’s not really much of an island, as much as complete darkness. It’s also a particularly frightening part of the book that would be incredibly difficult to get across in a PG rated film… I do agree, however, that Aslan’s appearance is an important one.

  5. As a response to Mark Sommer,

Thanks for clarifying! The fact that they might expand on the slavery theme is very interesting… I’m excited to see how that will go.

I agree with Nathan about consolidating the islands. It will help keep the movie flowing. I wonder which islands they’re going to join together? Just another question that I can’t wait to have answered.

Counting down the days till the movie is released!!! 😀

  6. You’re certainly welcome, Battle Maiden.

It is unclear what Malik means by “seven islands.” Here is a list of the islands (or groups of islands) the Dawn Treader visits. The first two on the list are before Lucy, Edmund and Eustace get on board.

    Galma
The Seven Isles (including Muil and Brenn)
The Lone Islands (Felimath, Doorn and Avra)
    Dragon Island
    Burnt Island
    Deathwater Island
    Land of the Duffers
Dark Island – where dreams come true (It IS actually called an island.)
    Ramandu’s Island

If you don’t include the islands before the children get on board, and consider The Lone Islands to be one island, you still have seven.

Burnt Island (where Reepicheep’s coracle is found) could easily be combined with Dragon Island with not much affect on the story. I don’t see what other islands they could combine. I hope they do not take out the Dark Island part of the story. But Paul may be right that they couldn’t do it justice and still make the movie PG.

  7. I agree that it is somewhat frightening, but I think they could mellow it down somewhat. It is more of a mist but still, I really hope they don’t cut it out.
