APRIL FOOLS! GRRM to oversee brand new “Legends of Narnia” book series. APRIL FOOLS!

Long-time friends of Narnia may recall, during the halcyon days of the internet of the publication of brand new “expanded universe” novels based on CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia surfacing online. Nothing came of these rumors, and to some it was felt that perhaps whether wires were crossed about the information or that fan backlash caused the project to be cancelled.

However, with Narnia slated to make a big impact later this fall, it’s only natural that the book that started it all would see new life along with a new film release. From the sounds of it, they don’t want to just do cheap, forgettable junior move novelizations that read like bad Wikipedia summaries of both the book and the film. They want something big, something special, and something fantastic,

Sources indicate that Andrew Peterson ( The WingFeather Saga), Bryan Davis (Dragons in our Midst), sister duo Kara and Rachelle Dekker ( Millie Maven and The Dream Travelers Quest), Kathy Tyers ( The Firebird series, Star Wars: Legends: The New Jedi Order: Balance Point), Karen Hancock( Legends of the Guardian King) and George RR Martin ( Game of Thrones) are just some of the names in talks to contribute brand new “Legends of Narnia” books, a brand new collection of expanded universe novels based on original notes from CS Lewis.

“The real challenge was finding authors who not only love Narnia and are versed in fantasy,” says Nia Connors, director of the project. “But authors who can respect Lewis’s faith that infused his work.”

“That had been what killed the project the first time around,” says Annalle Grace, a supervising editor on the project. “In hindsight, it’s probably a good thing they didn’t canonize Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Problem of Susan.”

“We don’t want this just to be like Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys,” adds Brennan Abramms, marketing director for the Project Narnia Legends brand. “Where we just stick the creator’s name on the book and have a company write the books.”

No official word has surfaced as to what tales these authors plan to examine. Speculation posts to anything from the years between The Magician’s Nephew and the start of the hundred-year winter, to the lost years of the Pevensies’ reign, to the voyages of the missing lords of Narnia sought after in Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The sky is frankly limitless for Narnia, and with this talented group of authors.

If successful, these books could very well serve as the template for future installments in the Netflix Narnia series. From the sounds of it, Martin is poised to play a role similar to Kevin Feige in The Marvel Cinematic Universe with these new books to ensure a coherent vision. It should be a daunting task for him considering how busy he is complaining about how he’d have done a better job writing Lord of the Rings than Tolkien, pretending to be a sea captain, acting as a model for collectible mugs of sea captains, serving as the spokesman for Gorton’s Fish, and performing the theme from SpongeBob Squarpants at kid’s birthday parties in his neighborhood, as well as trying to finish the first page of the final book of a Song of Fire and Ice.

We are especially pleased to announce we have been given an exclusive link to the pre-order for Martin’s tie-in novel, due to hit shelves on April 1st, 2999, making it the perfect gift for your friends, loved ones, and Robot Overlords to celebrate the anniversary of Robot Uprising Day.

  1. I don’t know… I’ve loved Narnia since I was a kid, so part of me is excited about the idea of getting new stories in that world. There’s definitely a lot they could explore that Lewis never got to.

But at the same time, this makes me a little nervous. Narnia isn’t just another fantasy series you can hand off to a bunch of writers and hope for the best. It has a very specific feel to it, and I’d hate to see that get watered down or turned into something generic.

That said, I’m trying to stay positive. If they really are being careful about who they bring in and they respect what made Narnia special in the first place, maybe it could work. I guess I’m cautiously hopeful… just keeping my expectations in check.

  2. ugh. If Martin is overseeing this, you just know it’s going to suck.

…if it ever sees the light of day.

  3. Wow! This is the best news ever! I love all these writers, but Martin is my favorite and can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.

I love Narnia and I love GoT. I love them so much I named my daughter Lucy Arya.

  4. I like most of the writers announced…but how do I put this….I’m not sure if Martin’s the right choice. his books have some things that would not be appropriate for Narnia IMHO
