Retro Narnia Rocks! Vol. 8 -April Fools Day Special! “Lazy Sunday”-The Lonely Island and Chris Parnell

Face Front, True Friends of Narnia! For this special April Fools Day Edition, we’re letting you take a peek behind the scenes at our very own group chat so you can see how the magic is made for Retro Narnia Rocks, by sharing with you the chat between me and Paul regarding the hit viral Narnia-themed music video “Lazy Sunday!”

Really, it’s the only way to look at the song. Like I can’t dissect the theme or imagery of the song as it’s a comedy bit about going to see Narnia in theaters one “Lazy Sunday.”

Jonathon:

…I was researching “Lazy Sunday” by The Lonely Island. Only song by that group that has a “clean Radio Edit.”*

Note: Further research reveals there are three more: “I’m on A Boat,” “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, recorded with Tegan and Sara, and “SuperCool” from The Lego Movie 2: The Second One with Beck and Robyn.

The Lonely Island started as a comedy trio before joining SNL in 2005. The members of the group are Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. Considering their origins and contributions to SNL, it’s actually not surprising to me. It’s like expecting the Blues Brothers to be G-rated.

But, by that same token, when compiling the list, I was looking specifically for the clean radio edits, much like how I wouldn’t include a song from the Blues Brothers soundtrack with some of the more “colorful” audio clips from the film. It’s about standards for our site!

Paul:

Perfect. Yeah, that’s the song that, I think, put [Walden Media’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe] on the map with the general public in 2005. I don’t know if the movie would have been as well-known without it. Because of the popularity of the song and the hook (It’s the Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia), a lot more people knew the movie was releasing than otherwise would have. It was a lot of free publicity for the film.

Jonathon:

It does show you’ve “made it” in pop culture when they do a “good” parody.

*Note: Not like Epic Movie. I do not consider that movie good. Or a Parody. Or Epic. Or a movie. Or a good parody.

Paul:

I’ve heard it said that if you make SNL, you’ve made it. And The Office even had a parody of “Lazy Sunday” called “Lazy Scranton.”

Jonathon:

I’ve heard similar in music about Weird Al, and for movies and TV with Mad Magazine. Like George Lucas told his lawyer to drop their suit against Mad Magazine when they did a spoof on the original Star Wars and requested the original line art to hang in his office.

Paul:

Hahaha. True. The song also helped put YouTube on the map, which had launched only five months earlier.
