What we know about Greta Gerwig’s Narnia so far

For a long time, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia project felt like a lot of rumor, a few solid reports, and long stretches of quiet. That is still partly true, but we can now say more than we could a few months ago.

Here is what we know so far, and where the blanks still are.

The first film still looks like The Magician’s Nephew

Everything credible around the project has kept pointing in that direction. If that is where Gerwig is starting, it is a revealing choice. It means beginning with origins, creation, and Jadis before the wardrobe ever comes into view.

Greta Gerwig is writing and directing

That part has been settled for a while, but it still matters. Gerwig has spoken about approaching Lewis with real care. That does not guarantee the film will work, but it does suggest she is not treating Narnia casually.

The release plan is set

The first film is scheduled for IMAX beginning Thanksgiving Day 2026, followed by Netflix on Christmas Day 2026. At the very least, that tells us Netflix and IMAX see this as a major launch, not something to quietly drop onto the service.

Filming has wrapped

Principal photography is done, which means the film is now in post-production. We are past the point where this exists only as development talk. The movie has been shot. Now we wait to see what shape it takes in the edit and in the first official footage.

Some casting looks firmer than other casting

We should still be careful here. Some reported names look much stronger than others. Daniel Craig has been central to the conversation. Emma Mackey has been widely linked to Jadis. Carey Mulligan has been tied to Digory’s mother. But not every reported name belongs in exactly the same category, and it helps to keep that distinction clear.

What we still do not know

We still do not have a public trailer. We still do not know exactly how Gerwig is handling the book’s structure, tone, or period setting. And we still do not know enough to judge the film itself.

Where things stand right now

Right now, the clearest picture is this: Gerwig’s first Narnia film appears to be The Magician’s Nephew, it is headed to IMAX on November 26, 2026 and Netflix on Christmas Day, filming has wrapped, and much of the project is still being kept quiet.

That is not everything, but it is more solid ground than we had before.
