I was a late-comer to the Narnia series and did not have the joy of reading them until I was a freshman in college. I devoured all seven novels, was swept away into Narnia, and fell in love with C.S. Lewis. He has been my favorite author ever since. I remember closing the last Narnia novel and thinking, "Wow, if someone could just be creative enough to put all of these stories on film." Years later -- I am now a mother of grown children and have 3 grandbabies -- imagine my delight when someone truly was creative enough to bring "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" to the screen and do it justice. Aslan is majestic, gracious, and kingly. You will believe he is a real lion, but not a tame one. The witch is a proper fiend, deviously promising rewards of Turkish Delight while preparing the dungeon. Edmund is unlikeable and reminds us all of our worst selves at one time or another -- compromised and self-absorbed. Lucy is honest,innocent, and brave, the way we all want to be: a child's joyful heart under the armor of a warrior. The witch's henchmen, the wolves, will make you jump, especially the one who almost gets stepped on by an unsuspecting Edmund. Special effects are seamless and convincing, the story is true to the original book, the heroes are charming, and the end of the movie will leave you anxious for the next excursion into Narnia. This movie will be a classic, much like the timeless story of hope and forgiveness that it retells so adeptly. In heaven, C.S. Lewis is surely smiling.
