Place in the books
Charn matters because it is the series’ clearest vision of a world destroyed by pride and power. The silence of the place does a lot of the work. It feels like judgment already completed.
It also gives Jadis her proper scale. She is more than a local Narnian menace. She comes from elsewhere, from a ruined history large enough to cast a shadow over Narnia’s beginning.
