Overview: The English countryside where the Pevensie children are sent during the war, just before the wardrobe opens the door to Narnia.

Place in the books

The London countryside is not part of Narnia, but it matters because it gives the story its ordinary starting point. Lewis begins with blackout-era England, evacuated children, and a big old house far from the city. That quiet setup makes the step through the wardrobe feel even stranger and better.

It is also the setting that brings the Pevensies to Professor Kirke’s house. Without that move, there is no wardrobe adventure, no meeting with Mr. Tumnus, and no first snowfall in Lantern Waste.
